lutz help.
i've been landig my lutz's flat. rawrr. i can do a full rotation and land it, but not on the toe. i do my lutz from back crossovers and gliding on a straight line, changing my arms from right arm in front to left, lifting my right leg, and then reaching back and jumping. i think i lose a lot of speed because when i reach back i go up on my toe so it scratches so i slow down a lot and i think i lose a lot of distance and height but i cant help it! lol.
thank you!!! ![]() |

I'm not working on the lutz yet, but maybe think of pointing your picking toe as you take off--then it will also be first thing to touch the ice when you land. Or think "energy through the ankle/toe" as you take off and while you're in the air. (Same idea, just a different way to think about it.)
Also, what has your coach said about it?

he had me walk on my toe picks or work out my calf [sp?] muscles. i tried pointing my toe but i stil didnt land on it. so i guess thats why he had me work on my muscles.

Kit kat, I know what you mean about your toe going in prior to the jump, I still have a tendency to do it, but then again I still can't even land it so at least you have got that far. Its a matter of slowing down a little and I know you younguns dont like hearing it, but if you are going at a speed that you are not comfortable with then what's the use if you have to slow down when it really matters.
Also correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert, but I thought you did an outside edge on the entry to the lutz, rather than a straight line? If it's from there then maybe that's why I can't land it, apart from being just plain chicken. Cheers Grace |

Concentrate on bending your left knee (CCW jumper) going into the jump. Instead of getting a deep knee bend to prepare for the take off, it sounds like you are just leaning forward instead. That will put you on your toe pick and slow you down, instead of a nice smooth BO edge.
Landing on a flat (or with a flat foot) means your weight is shifted in the air to the back slightly, and you are probably overrotating slightly as well. In order to get a nice BO curved edge out of a jump, you need to be about 1/16 underrotated from the trajectory of the jump. This is because it's impossible to do a jump off a perfectly straight line or land on a perfectly straight line. So: work on bending your knee on the entrance, and keep your left arm in front and your right arm to the side on the landing. |

I have to REALLY concentrate on bending my left knee so I don't go up on my toe. I also have trouble getting to the outside edge...my tendency is to try and twist my body, which doesn't help anything! So for now, I just try to stay on a flat so that I don't end up flutzing. Lesser of two evils.
