I was just wondering, since this is my first competition coming up where i will be competiting in Western Ontario Senior Bronze Starskate. I was wondering what people usually do at this level..Like 1st,2nd,3rd people,,what are they landing...etc.!thanks! Oh..i know it depends on everyone else in your flight, but how do you think i would place if i have axel , double lutz ( landing backwards, then fall,,but i might get it before end of november), double toe, double sal, double sal double toe, double loop double loop ( usually) , double flip (sometimes) ...THanks!!! |

The only way to get an idea about that would be to look at the detailed judge's sheets from previous competitions.
You can make a guess by looking that the allowed elements in the Well Balanced Program requirements and figure others in your class will be doing the maximum elements for your group. Go out there and skate your best program and don't worry about the others! Good luck!

You don't get detailed judges sheets in StarSkate ... it's still OBO, although we're moving to CPC for it.
The well-balanced program definitely comes into play here; I've seen strong jumpers placed below skaters with strong skating skills and spins. A 2LZ doesn't guarantee you a medal; nor does the lack of one knock you off the podium automatically. I have, though, seen more StarSkate judges watching for takeoff edges on lutzes and flips ... But, as Rusty very simply puts it: go out there, skate your best, and be proud of what you accomplish. Whatever doesn't work this time is what you work on for next competition ... For the reference of our US members who don't know the CDN rules, here are the jump requirements/limitations for Senior Bronze skaters: May have passed the Senior Bronze Free Skate Test but no higher complete test. 1) Maximum 7 jump elements a) All single and double jumps permitted except 2A b) Must include at least 1 Axel type jump (waltz or single Axel) c) Maximum 3 combinations or sequences. One jump combination may contain a maximum of 3 jumps d) Maximum 3 different jumps repeated and no jump included more than twice. Repeated jumps must be in combination or sequence. 2) Maximum 3 spins a) 1 Spin must be a flying spin b) 1 spin must be a combination (change of foot optional) c) Third spin of any nature 3) Maximum 1 step sequence |

Of course, if you have heard the rumors, S.C. is planning to cut WAY back on Star Competitions. If I was in Star, I'd be LIVID!

Well, since you've got the jumps that would theoretically let you pass your gold freeskate, I'd say you'd be about the bottom middle of the pack for Senior bronze star (not the limited category)
Why'd you move up? With clean loops you would have medalled probably at junior bronze. The top finishers in senior bronze will have double flips. There is an element of sarcasm in this entire post. |

I'm not ready to be a judge as I have serveral skating tests to pass first if I do choose to become one. I'd rather become a coach/choreographer.

If you can land cleanly any 3 doubles, you're medalling, provided that you can also spin and skate. |

Yes, *cleanly* land 3 doubles. I was commenting in a snide way on the state of sandbagging in Starskate categories.

The problem with becoming a judge is that it is all volunteer hours and that basically means giving away all your free weekends while you either trial judge (at comps and test days) and travel distances with minimal or no compensation. Most people have to work these days, so that means you can't get out and judge as much as someone could in the past (for example, when families could survive on one income)
Way back when, there weren't that many competitions in a skating year. Over the past decade or so, the skating calendars have been getting longer and fuller, with many sections holding a competition every weekend. Even SC says that competing more than once and month is too much. We had a debate about this as one competitive parent stood up and announced that he entered his daughter in every competition that they could drive to for a weekend. SC officials told him it was far too much and technically they should only do 3-4 a year (with the exception of say qualifying) Quote:

Anyways. Re the 3 doubles: I don't agree on that. It depends on the competition, and the LEVEL of the doubles. If it's 2 2S and 1 2T, while everyone else is landing 2L and up, then, no, you're not going to medal. I've seen kids who were strong in Junior bronze with the 2S, 2T, and then get placed far back in the pack in Sr Bronze b/c they didn't have the higher jumps. Jumps are also easier to quantify in OBO than, say, skating skills - and in packs of 20 kids in a flight, which happens, the big jumps stick out. And, it depends on your Section; you can see that at Trillium every year when some sections seem to place invariably higher than others, likely because of the number of skaters in the section and the availability of training and coaching. |

Strange ..... the talk I heard "out of the back room" was that S.C. wanted MORE competitions for their competitive skaters and we going to cut back on Star comps to do it.
(I recently began training as a Data Specialist - who needs a "free weekend" anyway LOL!)

The top medal winners at junior bronze were doing 2loop which is the highest jump allowed there. If they decided not to go pre-novice competitive, they've moved up to senior bronze and are coming into that category with a clean 2loop which is probably katieskater's situation. I'm not even going to talk about the test requirements, we're way beyond that. For the purposes of placing in competition, there will be skaters in senior bronze with clean, 2 flip, 2lutz, but the key word in that is *clean*. The top third will have skaters with clean 2 flip, the middle third will have clean 2loop and the bottom third will have the test requirements. The difference between senior bronze and junior silver in test requirements is having to have a double jump on the back half of the combination. That might be a plausible reason for some skaters still in senior bronze. |

Judges need either 2 junior bronze tests or one senior bronze, Coaches need all three junior bronze tests.
