Dance music..

Hey everyone!

I know that some of the dances (like Dutch Waltz) are based on real songs, and I was just wondering if anyone knows the songs that they are based on?

Thanks so much!

What country? In Canada the current series music has the Dutch Waltz based on Anne Murray's "Could I have this Dance", and yes, we sing along to it. We make up words to most of the dances that maybe *aren't* the original words but I can't repeat them on the internet!

I have skated it to "The Frogs' chorus", and I've skated it to a television theme tune, to "I'm forever blowing bubbles", and even to "Silent Night".

However, here in the UK, it is "officially" danced to the same music as the European waltz, as are the Prelim & Willow Waltzes.

If you check out the Skate Canada website, go to the store section and look at the Series 8 CD. All of the dance songs used have their original song listed. There are quite a few that are familiar. I am almost positive that the words in the song for the 14 Step go something like " Consider yourself at home, consider yourself part of the family." I tell ya, gets on your nerves after a while...

"Consider Yourself" is from the musical "Oliver," I believe. There are also songs from "My Fair Lady" (the Kilian, I think, and one other?).

European waltz

One version of the European waltz that I heard was the same melody as that "Edelweiss" song from the Sound of Music (but without the words). It was very haunting.....it used to get into my brain and I couldn't get that song out of my head all day long when I was at work!

A funny story... a friend of mine commented that our (conservative) dance coach was teaching the Cha-cha to a fellow skater to a Cha-cha version of "Dance of the Hours" by Ponchielli, which Allan Sherman wrote the parody song "Camp Granada" to. I had an evil thought of someday testing or competing the Cha-cha dance in a summer camp outfit with "Camp Granada" across the chest.

If I could get hold of that music, I'd do it as my next Interp, I think! I used to love that song when I was 10 - and I'd never heard of the "Dance of the Hours"!

It's from the Opera "La Gioconda" by Amilcare Ponchielli (according to Wikipedia.org.)

The parody song: "Hello Maddah, Hello Fadduh" can be heard here:

And here are the lyrics:

I wish I know where to get the ice dance Cha-cha version of it (I'll have to ask our ice dance coach), but the Allan Sherman version can be bought here.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I still remember these lyrics and those to his later song, "Return to Camp Granada". We used to sing them over and over at camp.

there's a dog medication commercial airing recently that uses another parody of the same song. Has the cutest yellow lab puppy in it.

i think the TenFox in SC's series 8 is another song from My Fair Lady, but I can't remember its title right now...all i know is that i cannot stand the 10-fox! argh! neither the dance steps nor the music. it is just one of those tests that is tried a lot and it grates on nerves!

It's "The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly in the Plain".

I can't quite get it up to speed myself.

i've always skated my ten-fox to "all i want is a room somewhere" from my fair lady. it's funny, i dont even notice it when i'm doing it, but my coach always tells me i subconsciously sing along to the songs i know - tenfox, fourteenstep..i must look like an idiot, i dont realise it!

I found this site today while looking for skating music.

http://www.ncassociates.com/icednce/

There's samples of ice dance music. I listened to the Hickory Hoedown samples, (a dance we don't do in Canada). I'm glad we don't do that dance, the music would drive me crazy.

Just the music? I tell you, the year they choose that for a pre-Bronze dance at the Mountain Cup (they've chosen it before as a solo, but not, thankfully, for couples), that year I don't compete.... ghastly dance! Husband, of course, likes it....
