Suggestions for Skating in Dallas, Athens?

Hi All,

My travels take me once again to various states where I have never skated before.

Is anyone familiar with a good rink close to downtown Dallas and Athens, Georgia? I'm looking for freestyle sessions primarily.

Thanks!

There is an ice rink in the Plaza of the Americas Building on Pearl Street downtown Dallas, the web site is icesk8aig.com. I know they teach lessons, so they should have some freestyle ice.

I skated there last year when I was in Dallas on business travel. While it is a very small venue to skate on, it was very pretty to skate inside the atrium area. The ice was very bumpy and not a very flat surface. (be careful around the doors where the zam comes out. there is a slight "hill" in the surface.) but all in all I was desperate to skate at the time and it was a sheet of ice.

I always enjoy visiting different skating rinks when I travel. Have fun on your skating journey, cecealias!

Hello!
I know you specifically needed something close to downtown but here are 2 other links for ice in the area (if you get a chance to breakaway).

Welcome to Dallas!

sk8pdx: I had forgotten that you skated there. I have not heard that the ice quality is a consistent problem there. I have never used their facilities though.

Soniaissuper: Thanks for posting the links..

Cece: If you are on the roads other than rush hours...the hwys are not too bad to travel to the further and larger rinks. All of DFW just kind of blends into together. So even if it is saying a burb city...it is a pretty straight shot. The Dr Pepper ones will have the largest selections of freestyle times. Let us know how it goes for you.

When I first saw the thread...I thought you meant Athens, Texas..giggle..doubted you would have much luck there!

Good luck! And safe travels.

The closest rink to Athens, GA is my rink in Duluth, GA.

They've just changed the freestyle schedule for the summer. The schedule on the web is not current. If you PM or email me with the dates you will be there, I can send you the schedule for those dates.

Wow! you guys are fantastic! Thank you so much for the helpful suggestions. I am looking forward to skating there and will try to contact you when I do leave for my trips

Duluth is about 1 hr away from Athens. Yikes!! No wonder I had a hard time looking for any rinks in Athens online. I realize in the south people have to drive a considerable distance to get to rinks, does anyone have any suggested car rentals besides the Hertz, Avis, etc? I looked at zipcar and they haven't made it down to the south yet, hopefully soon.

There are only 5 full time rinks in the whole state. 4 in metro Atlanta, and 1 in Augusta.

For rental cars, I search Orbitz.com, Travelocity.com, Kayak.com, etc.

For searching for rinks, the best site is:
