Coaching Payments

When I used to work for a software company, I had a base salary, plus commission, plus profit sharing, plus various trips with perks. My husband described my compensation as being like "Wheel of Fortune" -- spin the wheel and see what check comes this month!

I guess I'm back in that situation now. In addition to the corporate training jobs that put me on a payroll periodically, I have group and private lessons, commissions, and business expenses. (I just bought a new tape player for teaching programs to the skaters, plus my skates need sharpening.)

How do you keep track of the revenue/expense categories as an instructor? Do you pay estimated taxes or handle it through payroll deductions elsewhere?

I am 50% self employed, split right now between coaching & design (hopefully will be just coaching by end of year!). I pay estimated quarterly taxes & at the end of the year add up all my deductions from expenses. Well, my accountant does all that. Does that answer your question?
