"preparation for the sheepskin coat"

HA!

I was just looking at skating videos on that great site Sessy posted once -

http://skateclass.ru/recognition.shtml

and one of the videos doesn't have a translation:

Подготовка к тулупу

So I put it into Babelfish translator and apparently that means "preparation for the sheepskin coat." I don't know but it doesn't look like that to me??

he he, the "sheepskin coat" shows up quite often in translations of Russian skating websites made by Babelfish... :-)

Probably the simple translitteration will help you more:

Подготовка к тулупу = Podgotovka k tulupu

Podgotovka = preparation
I let you guess tulup :-)

Yeah that's because toe-loop becomes tooloop in Russian, which is indeed a sheepskin coat.

Actually not just a sheepskin coat. It's any fur coat where the fur goes on the inside of the coat (this makes the hard leather layer go outside, which means the fur doesn't get damaged as easily and wear increases - an average inside-out coat wears for some 10-15 years where as a normal fur coat 3-5 years). Incidentally, with the fur inside, the coat is warmer when the wind blows hard than a real fur coat.

My coach is Russian and whenever we work on double toes, or rather "double sheepskin coats", I'm going to think back to this thread and laugh. This has got to be one of the stranger threads we've got, LOL!
