Tights question

I went with my friend to buy her some new skates, and I figured since I was there, I might as well buy some tights, since I like to wear them under my pants to keep my legs from getting cold. I usually wear Danskin, since I saw them on sale a while back, but the pro shop only had Mondor. I bought a pair figuring it wouldn't be that big a deal, but when I opened them, they have a seam for where your heel is supposed to go, kind of like a sock.

I tried them on, and my foot is smaller than the foot in the tights, so the heel is up at the back of my ankle. I haven't tried them on with my boots yet, but I feel like this might pose a problem, having some extra material bunching up behind my ankle. Now, keeping in mind I have very limited sewing skills, is there anything I can do to remedy this? Should I just make them footless tights somehow? Or should I just order some Danskin tights online and wear these in the winter under my jeans when it gets cold outside?
