first 3axel

I have looked for this on the net before and stumbled upon it today, so I thought I would share in case anyone else is interested.

This is the 1st 3axel that counted in competition:

As a point of interest, here is a 3axel on quad roller skates:

Here is a newsreel of David Jenkins doing a 3axel in 1957:

Enjoy.

The thing I notice is that they take off practically backward, the first half revolution is on the ice. But then the skates used at the time - I'm amazed they were able to do even doubles on those!

Was the single slowed down on the tape? I can't really tell- but I've never seen anyone float that long.

And the triple- WOW.

(Not even to mention his gorgeous sit spin!)

These open rinks that stuff was filmed on totally add something to the atmosphere, they look larger somehow... It's great that stuff is still around

BTW is it just me or is he spinning in the air in practically the same place over the ice? As in, not travelling any horizontal distance?

It's just you. His delayed Axel was HUGE and covered great distance. I think it's the perspective of how they filmed it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Sun Valley outdoor rink is smaller than an NHL sized rink.

I'm pretty sure the jumps were slowed down. It looks way slower than the rest of the tape.

Great vid. Taylor was certainly an amazing jumper. His flying sit was probably the biggest I have seen, but he did not control the sit spin landing.

I wonder if his 3axel would have counted today. He did have to do a 3turn on the landing.

I think there was a bit of a cheat on the landing, but less than 1/4 turn, so I would say it would still count as a triple axel. The 3-turn on the landing would give it a negative grade of execution, but not keep it from counting as a triple axel.

Since this was a newsreel that played at movie theaters, I'm going to guess they slowed down the speed of the film for extra effect. At least as of a few years ago, Midori Ito's triple axel was on record as being the jump that spent the longest time in the air, and it was either 0.5 seconds or 0.75 seconds, I forget which.

Ha, I was feeling envious even before I opened the thread, thinking it was about someone on the board landing his/her first triple axel. Yeah, not likely someone of that caliber would post here, but . . . . : )
