Did you take the exam online, CoachPA? Was the study guide comprehensive or are there other sources that would have helped?

I wish! I just can't quite afford to this year...but I am going to try really hard to start saving for next year's conference. I've been meaning...wanting...to go for years now.

Yep, I took it online. It's a 34-question test similar to the online version of the BA Exam or other E-Learning courses offered through the PSA on their website.

I ordered the study guide back in November, but I hadn't really taken much time to look it over until the last two or three weeks. You basically study to your level of certification within each chapter, so I didn't have nearly as much to cover as those who would be taking Certified, Senior, or Master exams. I'd say I had an average of three or four pages per chapter. And, the study guide is actually comprehensive based on the questions asked on the exam, which made the exam fairly easy. As I mentioned earlier, I did miss three questions; however, one I didn't read carefully enough and clicked too quickly the wrong answer, and the other two I missed didn't seem clearly worded. In general though, there's not a lot of room for interpretation and the questions are pretty straight to the point.

I went to the 2009 conference and it was excellent. They really made an effort to provide topics for all coaching levels.

2010 being an Olympic year, and since I'm still building my student base here, I'm skipping the conference. I figure make money while I can and I can go to the 2011 conference.

I'm glad to hear about the study guide's comprehensiveness. I think I'll pull my copy out and think about taking the SS&M exam. I have to take care of the USFSA First Aid requirement anyway, so hopefully I can kill two birds with one stone. I was a lifeguard, so I had Red Cross certifications but they also need to be renewed.

Are you talking about the First Aid for Coaches certification offered through the PSA by the American Red Cross? If so, I took that last several months ago and it wasn't that difficult either. Again, a good study guide is provided. In fact, there's almost more information and more indepth information covered in the First Aid for Coaches exam than there is on the SS&M exam. In that sense, taking the First Aid exam first was beneficial.

I was planning to do it in the opposite order. Thanks - that's a great suggestion, I'll take the Red Cross exam first.
