Practice doing waltz jump/back spin. This will help get a feel for the snap that you need to do in order to get into the correct position for rotation. Don't concentrate on jumping into the air on the waltz jump, but focus on getting a good position in the back spin. You want to be tight in the back spin. Doing waltz jump/loop will help as well. Good luck with the axel!

Off ice, jump up on to a chair or low bench to give you the feeling of jumping up you'll need.

Practice backspins, and jump out of the spin into a landing position.

I had to do waltz jump -loop from standstill before attempting axel.
It's quite hard (for me) to control a waltz-loop from standstill but must be a good exercise for axel. |

Try bunny hops, backspins, a few waltz jumps in a row, waltz jump loops, waltz jump - backspin, and waltz jump - loop-backspin.
