Instant Progressives

At a public session yesterday, I chatted with a couple of retired firefighters in hockey skates about some of the differences between figure and hockey skating. One of them demo'd F crossovers with his shoulders turned out of the circle instead of hugging the circle. I've seen this in elite competition before. When I tried it, I got progressives

I have always - literally ever since I could control my shoulders - been required to do forward crossovers and/or progressives with my shoulders in either direction. One exercise I have been known to do fairly frequently is 4 slow, 4 fast with shoulders one way; 4 slow, 4 fast with shoulders the other way; repeat; now do the same in the opposite direction! And if you are going to do crossovers and then hold one of the edges, you need to have your inside shoulder forwards..... I actually find that easier!
