I started PT today
This morning at 8:30, I had the first of what is going to be a string of PT appointments.
For the uninformed masses, my story is simply this. Three weeks ago on lesson, I fell on a loop landing and afterward couldn't land jumps without pain. After a week of it, I went to the orthopedist and was given a prescription for PT. I made the appointment Monday to be seen this morning. At the fill in the forms process, I was told that in addition to the co-pay I would get a 20% discount on that, because they PT are affiliated with the hospital I work at! Yay! I was evaluated and it seems as if the ligament strain is resolving, but if I do skate, I cannot jump. Okay then I thank goodness that it this is a time in my life that Work Interferes With Skating, and for that reason, I decided not to do NYI this year. The therapist decided to do this ultrasound thing on me, where you get warm squishy gel on the affected area and they rub some sort of wand on it to get the blood flowing to the area. After that, I was introduced to the Thera Band and at home excercises. So, I'll go there next Thursday (schedule for them is tight next week) and the following week Monday, Thursday and Friday. Hopefully by mid to late February I'll be tackling the Bronze free test with a vengeance!

Good to hear you are on your way to recovery, Terri! And that's nice about the discount.

I sprained my ankle a couple of years ago about 6 weeks before I was going to compete (mind you I don't do anything harder than a half flip and waltz jump) and I thought that was the end of that...but my doc sent me to Pt and they did that gel ultra sound thingy every day and in a month I was doing waltz jumps. That and lots of ibuprofin. It was amazing. It was kind of fun being treated like some kind of important athlete who needed to be fixed up for the big competition.

YAAAY!!! Well on your way to recovery!!! And the 20% is SWEET too!
![]() I was just looking back at my old post from when I had a similar injury in 2004. I think I was on crutches maybe a week and was back a little after a month and back doing jumps a month after??? So the fact that you can STILL skate (just no jumps) is very hopeful, b/c at least you can STILL run thru your program (just no jumping!!!) so you don't lose the Bronze FS program mojo that you've already put into the program.

Hey, discounts are *always* good, right? Seriously--it's really great that you can still skate, Terri. There're loads of things you can work on until you can jump again.
PT is a wonderful experience ![]() ![]() Here's to a good recovery and consistent PT exercising! |

Hope your PT goes well. I know what you mean about the ultrasound thing. It actually feels quite nice. I also go massage which was nice. I actually liked PT, my therapist was awesome. And I'll never forget how nice it felt when he told me I had some of the best flexibility he's ever seen.

Good luck, Terri! And do all the exercises as much as they tell you! I think my physical therapists are all a bit bemused that I actually do everything they tell me to do, and even if they say, "Do 10 of these for 20 seconds each" I actually watch the clock. Apparently that's not common, go figure.
I hated that ultrasound thingy, but they only did it once. It just rubbed funny on a bone. Most of the time I still like going, but I kid my one therapist that all he has to do is come near me, not even touch me, and my blood pressure goes up, LOL!

Progress report
So it's been three weeks or so...
Yesterday, PT gave me clearance to try to jump on the ice, under the condition that if there is pain to stop immediately. On lesson today, coach had me try waltz jump and...... NO PAIN ON THE LANDING!!!! ![]() ![]() After that I did three in a row, and I felt a pulling sensation, then tried waltz toe and couldn't pull that off. So I have another appointment next Friday and will continue with the home program until then which now tempts me to buy myself a dyna disc (they have me doing one foot balances on this).

Wouldn't it be cool if you finished this round of therapy being able to do stronger spins than before PT?
Glad the therapy is working well. Don't push too hard, but don't slack off. My kids have a big balance disk and I love using it in the kitchen. (Counters to grab when I overextend.)
