I've got to say, I'm terribly impressed, too! You look very athletic, do you have a background in gymnastics, or, I don't know, soccer or something?

Thanks! Yes - I was a higher level gymnast (not elite but like around level 9) - unfortunatley I twist in skating like a gymnast - using my arms and shoulders - which I am apparently not supposed to do - Im working on it but its a very hard habit not to set and twist with the shoulders haha

What I see on your salchow is that you are taking off immediately as you exit the 3-turn rather than holding the LBI exit edge ("checking the 3-turn exit") and then bending the knee and taking off. As my coach always yells at me, "The 3-turn is not part of the jump!" LOL! To hold the exit edge and control it, keep your upper body still during the 3-turn with your left arm at 10:00 and your right arm at 3:00 or 4:00. Also keep your free leg behind you on the exit, just like you're going to do a flip jump. Then bend the left knee deeply, and only start to bring the free leg forward once you start to straighten the takeoff leg to initiate takeoff. What I see on your flip and toeloop is that you have great action vertically (popping up off the toe) but you need more horizontal momentum to balance it out and get some outflow on your landing. Here's how to get more outflow: - Start with more speed, especially for the flip (I know you were just going slowly for the camera). - Bend your skating knee more deeply on the 3-turn and stay down on the knee as you exit the 3-turn instead of rising up. - Reach your free foot farther back to pick, pulling your shoulders back and arching your back so you get your weight onto the picking toe. Stay low on your skating knee when you pick so that you "jump from down, not from up". This is especially important on the flip. - When you put your pick into the ice, pull yourself back with it so that your skating foot slides back toward the picking foot before you fully straighten both legs and leave the ice (this is also more for the flip, but also somewhat trure for the toeloop). - On your toeloop (but NOT on the flip), you need to cross your right leg in front of your left leg as you leave the ice so that you are pointing the way with your right foot once you're in the air, just like on a salchow or waltz jump. I can't wait to see how good you are in another year! ![]() ![]()

Thank you all so much for the comments and advice! It helps a lot. Luckily for my - the jumping comes a bit easier since I dont really have any fear. My weakest area (which I know is super important) is MITF since I have a bit of a sequencing problem (kinda like dislexia of the body even though I dont have the problem with anything else), so learning the steps is killer, but I'm working on it
![]() All the videos you guys have shown are terrific and really inspiring! Thank you. And I used the advice give and my toe loop and flip felt better today. The waltz is much higher and floats a bit - heres hoping to an axel in the (hopefully not too distant) future! |
