Noticed a lot of summer camp ads for adults and kids, so it's time for a new thread.

Just a tip: most year-round rinks offer lessons and camps in the summer.
Check www.arenamaps.com (http://www.arenamaps.com) to find your local rink's website. Look for "Summer Camps" - most have info online by April.

No note about the adult skating camp that they used to host.Unfortunately, the adult (1-day) camp appears to be a thing of the past. I was hoping they would offer it again now that they are staying open year round, but when I asked the program director about it, she danced around the subject for a few minutes and basically said that it didn't make enough money for the rink and was too much work to plan, and she's too busy planning the summer camp. :x

I'm hoping my club has a seminar - would be for kids and adults - b/c they've been talking about doing something like that, but it may not happen this year.

I am interested in doing an adult skate camp again this year. I thought I would try Hackensack. However, I cannot find any information about it on their website, your skate camp thread, or google. I am now wondering if they are just not going to hold it this year. Does anyone know if this annual camp is being offered this year? If not, do you have a high recommendation for another camp this summer besides Lake Placid? I have already done that one and since traveling with my partner would like to be in a new location for variety.

Thank you in advance for any information you might share.

Last year Detroit Skating club held their Motown Tango dance weekend and Freestyle seminars on the same weekend (inadvertantly) as Hackensack. That was a fantastic weekend with a lot of ice time. If you are looking for something new, I'd recommend it, though I don't think the information is up yet.

Thanks for the info! Are these camps worth going to? A number of them seem a bit pricey for just two days. More importantly, how do your coaches feel about them? I imagine that a few coaches may not like having to "unteach" a technique a skater may have picked up at a camp. Are they better for more advanced skaters (say, intermediate to Masters) or are they helpful for beginners ( Bronze, Juv. etc.). I've always wondered....

I have only attended Lake Placid skate camp. The fee included two parties, unlimited freestyle sessions from early AM to late PM with all the adults enrolled in camp, a welcome reception, a mid week party with alcohol and food, and an adult show where you could skate your program. We also did a group number with the participants that week. The group classes were 13.00 additional that you could pick and choose. They were led by major coaches, some former Olympians or National/International Competitors. I found this to be quite a deal. The base fee was 250. It seemed reasonable for the amount of time I spent there all week. They also zammed the ice evey 2 hours so it seemed well maintained.

I also liked that they broke the groups into levels by skill. For example you could take a waltz jump class or a doubles class. There were several offerings for on and off ice each hour. That naturally divided the group into managable numbers that individual attention was found in each class.

The folks that participated were really nice and shared a passion for skating. It was worth the money just to get to skate all week with them! I highly recommend camps. I am not sure if it was a reflection of the classes or the fact that I got to spend so much time for a week concentrated on skating but I came home with my skill level significantly improved. I was at the rink all day but generally skated 6-8 hours of that time per day. A big boost from what I am able to with the reality of work and life happening at home.

I believe coaches are mostly positive about having you attend camps. I think most camps have the better coaches to help attract people to attend. But I have seen coaches discourage anything that would take you away from them. I believe for the most part they use the "bad habit" excuse, but it seems to be from coaches that have the most interpersonal difficulty at rinks anyway.

I have an awesome coach with good ego strength. Her ego is good because she is talented and has no difficulty filling her book with students. She is not threatened by having her students work with others. She was the first to say that my abilities demonstrated a significant jump just returning from my week long camp. She has never discouraged me from taking lessons from other coaches when she is out of town or if she has asked me to work with a specific coach for a specific skill I am struggling to achieve. She also believes sometimes you just have to hear it in a different way.

Thanks for the information on the other camps. I am holding out for Hackensack but considering Aspen as the alternative so far. It just looks so pretty on the websites!

My skating friend talked to someone at Hackensack and was told the info would be posted "soon" so hang in there! I'm waiting as well to see if I can squeeze it in between Friday clinical and Monday classes. (I was hoping to have more time for a NYC field trip but I have summer session classes).

I had a great time but was so wiped out when I got off the ice! I skated hard and was glad I took the time to workout a bit more to get into shape-I felt like lunch was the only break I got each day-LOL! I learned so much but also heard the a lot of the same advice I hear from my private coach (yay!)

A friend of mine was out at DSC a few weeks ago for a skate sharpening and said they have the dates posted for the Motown Tango Weekend - June 25-27.

As long as they're still offering the freestyle clinic in conjunction with the dance clinic, I'll be there this year! :D

Skittl1321
04-04-2010, 08:28 PM
I thought the Detroit freestyle clinics were worth the money. For actual improvement- didn't see too much, though I got some interesting new ideas to bring to my coach. But for the chance to skate with other adults and see what their skating looked like at different levels was really really great.

I won't go this year because injuries have prevented me from making pretty much any progress since last summer (and I'm currently off ice now...) but I might go back in the future. To some extent I think that working with elite skaters is a selling point, but there was definetly actual content taught.

Hi Dallas Skater - I remember you from Lake Placid, about four years ago, right? I've attended the camp in LP every year since, and although I love the camp and the Adirondacks (I'm just a Northeast type of girl), I've been to Sun Valley several times and it certainly is as beautiful a place as Lake Placid.
I've always wanted to attend that camp, too.
Judy Bloomberg is one of the coaches - what a treat, I took a clinic with her a few years ago, in Falmouth, Maine. Other caoches of interest include Lisa Marie Allen, and Gia Gadot. She used to skate cool programs with Gary Beacom.

Here's some info:

Hey Pat, good to virtually see you! I did show Kay Sun Valley as an option and tried to temp her with pictures from the area. She can just not swallow Idaho...giggle. I would have been content there but I want her to have a place she really likes too since I will be skating. NYC is an easy sell as we love Broadway. We would likely stay a week so I could go to all the plays too. We are thinking we could stay in NJ for the camp then move to NYC the rest of the week or maybe even extend a bit more. Aspen is a place we have never been been that got high marks as well. She loved Lake Placid but it is a small area and we stayed long enough to do all the summer happenings there. It is just a big rule out and rule in event going on in Dallas!

Last we spoke you were tearing up the ice with broken arms and other near suicidal happenings. How have you been? I am delighted to learn that you have returned to Lake Placid every year. Wish we lived closer to a great camp. We are such beachy people that a lot of our full vacations head directly to the tropics. But I at least try to head that way on cruise ships with skating rinks! giggle.

Good to hear from you and I will want a full report if you do Sun Valley!

[CENTER]Adult Seminar (http://www.skatemariposa.com/documents/January_2010/The%20Seminar.pdf)
June 14-18, 2010
Mariposa School of Skating invites Adult Skaters to attend our Seminar June 14-18, 2010.# The on ice components of this program focus on free style, dance, edges, stroking, turns and artistic.# Off Ice components will include yoga, dance, conditioning and motivational lectures.# The hours of the seminar will be between 9am & 5pm tentatively (exact schedule TBD).

You haven't lived until you've experienced a motivational lecture from Doug Leigh. I don't know anything about the adult specific nature of this camp, but have been to the seminar week several times. Many of the videos on http://www.mysk8coach.com/ are from the seminar weeks if you want an idea of what the ice sessions look like.

The Gardens Ice House, Maryland is hosting a two-day Bobby Shire spin camp/clinic. I'm told that the rink is age-friendly (my coach skates there) and the camp/clinic is open to all levels/ages. $185 for skaters, $40 for coaches.

There are two dates:
June 30 & July 1
August 11 & 12

I'm thinking of going since I couldn't do Hackensack.

Wheaton Ice Arena (http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/ice/wheaton/index.shtm) has several week long summer camps.

The Week in the Park Camps (http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/ice/wheaton/documents/brochure2010WeekinthePark.pdf) are for for ages 6-12, starting on dates from 6/28/10 to 8/16/10.

The Figure Skating Camp (http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/ice/wheaton/documents/brochure2010Figure.pdf) for ages 7 and up starts 8/9/10.

The Ice Dance Clinic (http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/ice/wheaton/documents/brochure2010Dance.pdf) has one session for ages 18 and up, starting 6/28/10 (and you can take less than the week), and another for ages 5 and up, starting 8/16/10.

The Hockey Camps (http://www.montgomeryparks.org/enterprise/ice/wheaton/documents/brochure2010SummerHockeyCamp.pdf) for ages 6-12, starting 7/29/10.

Most of the other DC metro area Ice rinks (http://mgrunes.com/dcicerinks.html) that are open in the summer have camps too.

It is the Ice Dance Clinic I want to make sure continues. They have borderline level attendence. I described this clinics in these threads last year:

http://skatingforums.com/showthread.php?t=29059&highlight=wheaton+dance+week

http://skatingforums.com/showthread.php?t=28373&highlight=wheaton+dance+week

I love the way they teach.

One of the instructors was a Russian National Champion, and the rest, also from Eastern Bloc, have almost as impressive records (see http://www.wisa.us/coaches). The Clinic includes on and off ice training, from 8 AM to 11:45 AM, with two 15 minute breaks.

They do not list skating level, but it is probably safe to say you head better be able to skate inside and outside edges, on both feet, both forwards and backwards. If it matches the last time I took it, there are various drills at various levels, some at levels almost no one can do (e.g. skating complicated figures on power pulls).

They have focused on power, edges, and body positions, but not partnering.

Off ice they have focused on strength and flexibility training they partly learned from Russian style ballet and ballroom dance instructors.

Twin Oaks Rink in Morristown, NJ is offering a Tuesday afternoon drop-in trial class with none other than JoJo Starbuck.

Forecast for Tuesdays ice-cold with Starbuck’s skating classes

Published: Aug 6th, 7:09 AM

The public is invited to join Olympic figure skater JoJo Starbuck of Madison from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. every Tuesday, now through Aug. 18, at the Twin Oaks Ice Skating Rink at 65 Columbia Road in Morristown for a refreshing one-hour skating class for adult recreational beginners and their children. The rink’s phone number is (973) 292-5699.

Children will have their own class, on another part of the ice, with former National Hockey League (NHL) great Randy Velischek.

If a child wants to skate and the parent does not, the child may take the class with Velischek.

And, in keeping with the spontaneity of summer, patrons decide how many lessons they want to take, from one class, to all the weekly classes through Aug. 18. Patrons are asked to inform Starbuck about their attendance the night before each lesson day via e-mail to pnielsen@twinoaksicerink.com (pnielsen@twinoaksicerink.com).

Each class is $25 per skater. If a parent brings a child to skate too, the cost is reduced to $20 per family member on the ice.

Starbuck invites the public to strap on their skates and take a break from their summer routines. Patrons must bring their own skates, as Twin Oaks does not provide rentals. Hockey and figure skates are welcome.

The lack of rentals is a real drawback, but the pro shop at Mennan Arena has some resales that are affordable for beginners, as well as new skates.

Full disclosure: I received this (unsolicited) via Yahoo! Alerts, but coincidentally, a friend of mine is part-owner of the facility. I've never been there, but I understand it's a converted tennis facility. The group lesson program is neither ISI nor USFSA, it is a USA Hockey curriculum geared towards Learn to Play.

I'm thrilled to see LTS classes because the rink started out as a hockey-only facility. They don't have public or freestyle sessions, afaik, so this is a step in the right direction towards building patronage and programs. Most non-hockey skaters don't even know the rink exists.
