Well if it's driving distance I'm going to have to get my bronze FS by then!

wonder what the quicker road trip is: up through the UP or down and around through Chicago and up

OKAY! No excuses for 2010. I didnt' feel ready to do the pre bronze dances...and it was expensive to go to Michigan - but this is 3 hours away.

OH I HOPE THEY STILL HAVE SOLO DANCE next year.

2010 I AM IN. If they have solo dance that is.

Yay - only a 3.5 hour flight from Newark Airport to Minn/St. Paul, so looks like I'm in. If I don't pass Bronze fs by then I'll...blame my coach?

Well, I guess Minnesota in April is better than Minnesota in January, but still....

If they want a big turnout, it might be better to have AN in a...um...less wintry place. It is April, after all.

Some of us live in wintry areas and April is not bad at all. They had Nationals in Minnesota in JANUARY!

Uh-oh. I haven't even passed (or attempted, for that matter) Pre-Bronze anything and now I'll need to get my Bronze tests passed by April 2010. Not a lot of time, for someone who can barely skate!!! But I live in the Twin Cities and so this is a "must" for me - a good goal to have (while I'm also starting a new career and all AND have kids in swimming and hockey - oh, well, life'll be just a bit MORE insane for a while).

Mimi

P.S. JSkater - I hope you'll enter Light Comedy/Interp next year - I'd LOVE to see your "Master of the House" program again, it was really terrific!

Oh quit with the "I can't skate" ...I've seen you skate.

And I don't know if I could pass all 3 pre-bronze dances in time to be able to do interp...but I hope they have the solo dance again because THAT I could manage in a year....

And to be fair- MN is a "springy" place in April, winter is over by then. Spring isn't usually warm, and there might be still snow- but it's nothing like winter.

Still- I'd take a snowy drive up to having to pay $400 to fly somewhere.

Yeah - you've seen me skate, so you know perfectly well that I don't hold a candle (not even a little bitty birthday-cake candle) to your skating!!! And I am guessing you'll pass Bronze Freestyle a lot faster than I will - remember, I saw BOTH of your skates earlier this month, they were both really good, and you have or are close to the jumps you need as well as those edges. Me, I have NO jumps (except an inconsistent bunny hop ), and no decent threes, and am not close to either a sit spin or a back spin. Oh, well, I'll have my work cut out for me. I keep telling myself that back in the year 1982 (really!!!) I could do all the above except for the back spin . . . have never done a back spin in my life. We shall see.

Mimi, who is getting a bit ambitious here.

OK, here goes. . . This is my annual whine about ALWAYS having to pay to fly somewhere and ALWAYS having to compete in a time zone that is 2-3 hours ahead of mine so I feel like I'm skating at 4:00am! In the 6 years I've been competing, it has never once been on the West Coast. :frus:

WOW!!! That's EARLY!!! 8O 8O 8O

But no matter -- after AN 09, I plan on taking a break to do Silver Moves. I need it! I will be back for AN once I pass Silver Moves or Gold Moves depending on the timing and my $$$ situation. If I'm too broke to travel, I'll stay home and work on Gold Moves.

Sadly, not in this economy situation. I mean, I was hoping for the Hack in 2010... but I guessing it's too $$$ to rent the rink too...

The last time I competed in MN was in March 1995 and I remember it being pretty tolerable weather-wise.

I am excited to have the opportunity to go back to the Mall of America!

Hopefully, I will have passed my Silver tests by 1/15/10, so I can compete in freestyle!

Well, I am not at all sure that a tush the size of mine will EVER get airborne, so the jumps may just be a pipe dream. That, or I may actually have to stick to a diet for a change. And my knees will HATE the sitspin - I spin more naturally to the right, but will have to do my sitspin (if indeed I ever do one) to the left because no way will my right knee support it. No matter - I am going to try it. My house is about 45 minutes from the rink in Bloomington, so if I can get those tests passed . . .

Mimi, whose knees aren't gonna like this.

Too bad you rejoined your skating club before the announcements about our sectionals being at Vegas came out too. :( And hell, at this point, I'm NOT planning to go to Sectionals either, as much as I REALLY REALLY want to go there! Given my moods as of late... if it wasn't for AN, I would be working on Silver Moves now instead of putz around trying to get a half axel.

I will agree that I'd like to compete somewhere warm, Dallas did have that going for it. But to counter the whine about the west coast -- BID!!! I know the rink in Scottsdale has an adequate facility. What about your own clubs, encourage them to bid and you then you can host.

Doubletoe,
This is where you get your cronies and yourself to get one of the LA area clubs to bid on AN '11. I'm sure with wealth of skating knowledgeable folks in your neck of the woods, it can be done. If AN is ever, ever held in LA, I'd sooo be there!!

I've been to the Mystic Lake casino- it's not too bad, machines were luckyish for me and the buffet was great. Only problem was that it was very smokey.

I can't think of one rink in L.A. that is suitable. El Segundo has two surfaces, but the sound carries from one to the other, and only one has seating. Lakewood has three surfaces, only two are big enough ... and they're not sound-proof either. Maybe the two-surface Anaheim Ice, but there's zero seating on one surface. Am I forgetting any?

For those who don't think that we've tried to bid in the Bay Area...

Oakland already had their Adult Nationals and we all know what everything thinks of Oakland. And we did have Sectionals in 2006 there (where I not only met DOUBLETOE but also FINALLY see her land her double sal at competition!!! ) Other problem is that Oakland is now owned by the San Jose Sharks. I doubt now we can afford it unless we're doing hockey...

We would love it to be in San Jose, but again, part of the issue with bidding on a rink is $$$... and unfortunately San Jose Sharks owns the San Jose rink and it's WAAAAY too expensive to rent out the place for the length of time needed. (Or at least that was MY understanding.)

My rink only has the one rink. Barely suitable for Sectionals.

I would love to not travel far for AN's too. I've never been to Minnesota though, so that will be fun!!

Speaking of the Scottsdale rink (as that's where I'm skating these days), there are only 2 surfaces in the building. Tons of other surfaces all over the Phoenix area exist, but not in the same building or close. It was a big pain to get to the off-site practice rinks in Dallas and Kansas. The club just hosted Pac Coast sectionals and is hosting regionals next season.

My understanding is that they are planning to add a third surface to the Scottsdale facility sometime soon. Then it might be feasible to do AN. I have no idea whether the club would want to or not as I am just an associate member - gotta stay loyal to Tucson even if there are no rinks right now!!

You have to have 3 rinks to hold AN? I've never even seen a building with that many rinks. I've only even seen a few with 2! No wonder so few clubs can bid.

Didn't Scottsdale just hold sectionals? Are the ice demands for AN a lot higher than that?

Two rinks to run all the events and a third to hold practice ice DURING the event over 4 days. There are a lot of skating levels and events... and a LOT of skaters!!! (At least last April at Lake Placid, it was a pretty decent size.)

I'm telling 'ya!!! It's ADULT SKATERS CENTRAL!!! Definitely something to go thru once in your skating life!!!

Only two rinks have to be in the same facility, for the events themselves. The third can be somewhere else, as long as it is close. That one's usually practice ice.

Ah, you should have been competing in 1998 when it was held in Oakland, although I gather that it wasn't considered the most successful of ANs. There was quite a large contingent of visiting British and Australian skaters that year, including me - we did have fun!

But I live in the Twin Cities and so this is a "must" for me - a good goal to have (while I'm also starting a new career and all AND have kids in swimming and hockey - oh, well, life'll be just a bit MORE insane for a while).

Mimi, even if you aren't ready to skate by then - and if you tell your coach TOMORROW (or whenever your next lesson is) that this is your deadline, I'd be surprised if you weren't - I'm sure that everybody will fall on your neck if you volunteer your services as a helper during the event.

There are only two rinks in the whole of the UK with two ice pads - and the other rink in those two cities closed very soon after the twin-padded ones opened!

Hmmm, I've always wanted to visit Minnesota.....

We in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area live in the Land of Many Ice Rinks. And many of the facilities have two or more ice sheets under one roof - the Blaine SuperRink, at the National Sports Center, has eight. Eight, under one (large) roof. And STILL not a whole lot as far as public sessions go, but they do have open freestyle most afternoons and evenings. A few rinks up here have open freestyle as well as public skating, and the public sessions are pretty good IF you can get there during the daytime (evening and weekend ones are madhouses, alas):frus:. Lots of 2 and 3 sheet rinks, though - those who are coming here to ANs in 2010 and want extra practice time can look up rinks on www.rinkfinder.com. Or else I can post a list of rinks and open ice times when ANs get close (someone remind me, though). One would think that with this many rinks around figure skating would be THE thing, but it's mostly all about hockey. Hockey is, if anything, more obsessive than figure skating. My daughter plays hockey, and her team either practices or has a game 5 and sometimes 6 days a week - and these girls are only in elementary school, 4th and 5th grade (my daughter is in 4th grade). Insane - but my lovely daughter has some disabilities and for her, hockey makes up for a whole lot. I tried to interest her in figure skating - no luck, she is the quintessential tomboy who has dreamed of being a goalie for a long time, so now she is a very happy goalie. And Mom is working toward getting her Pre-Bronze and Bronze tests passed by early next year, so that she can actually skate at AN's (as well as volunteer).

Like Skater1964 said, the bulding only needs to house 2 rinks with a third one close by. GR is like that, Chicago was like that, KC was like that, Dallas was like that.... Please don't spread the misinformation that it must be a three rink facility.

Ice demands for standard track Sectionals are MUCH lower than Adult Nationals. Adult Nationals is typically 4 days, three rinks, non-stop for competition.

She was referring to me... :halo:

I apologize if I wasn't clear. Yes, it's a 2 ice surface rink with one close by for practice ice. As for what IS "close by", I have no clue, but San Francisco Bay Area is definitely NOT that with the exception of San Jose. Oakland no longer is eligible due to the closing of Berkeley Iceland. (The next closest rink to Oakland is my rink and that is a MAJOR jaunt, especially in commute hours!!! 8O )

And the powers that be for the club at the San Jose rink have actually looked into putting in a bid for AN, because there are four surfaces at that rink, but the cost was prohibitive.
