Hackensack, NJ- Report on Moran Memorial competition, Saturday August 23, 2003.

SENIOR LADIES (only saw FS)

1. Roth- 3t, 3s, attempt at 3f was a stepout and not sure if full rotation, 2ax basically landed but spun around and fell, 2s ok, 1.5toe fall, 2s-2t. Stephanie looks GREAT at this point in the season, I think she could be really competitive this year. Awesome camel spin to start, great layback, footwork towards end needs more oomph, spirals in some very good positions but would be more effective if they covered more ice. Overall a very complete program with excellent choreography. My favorite performance of the day, it was just great but improving those little things by regionals and sectionals could help-- I would love to see this firebird fly!

2. Katz- fall on 2ax, fall on 3t, 2f stepout, bad stepout on 3s, 2r, 2z, 2f. Very nice and fast spin with illusions to start. Wonderful look on the ice, lovely stretch, great layback and spirals. Spins excellent...Chloe has a lovely touch on the ice and really knows how to create on the mood on the ice with her skating to the music. I wish she could land her jumps! I think the music was Miss Saigon.

3. Adamoyurka- 2ax (slight 2foot?), 3t (kind of tight on rotations), 2.75 sal, 2z, 2r-2r, 2f, 2ax (tight), 1z. Nice mover...nice spiral section, footwork ok, bad leg on layback, spins ok but need to be held longer and spin faster, good choreography and strong senior quality/ high level performance held up throughout. She had a good case for 2nd here, but some of her weaknesses especially on the spins did her in. She's making good progress on the jumps since the last time I saw her.

JUNIOR LADIES FS
1. Erica- 3s to 2t, 3t stepout, 2r, 3s, 2z, 2ax, 2f. Very solid performance, good spins, nice spread eagle with a great effect, footwork ok. Sleeping Beauty was the music, I think. She looks really solid at this time in the season and could be a strong contendor at regionals if she continues at this rate.

2. Shua-Haim- fall in 3f, good 2ax, 2s came apart, 2ax fine, 2z-2t. Music was Carmen (Parker P.'s SP music from last season). Good choreography, spins, and basics all strong.

3. Koo- 2ax, 2t, fall on 2f, 2.5s, 2r-2r, 2.0ax, 2z, 2f. Spins ok. Butterfly Lovers.

4. Falco- fall on 2ax, landed 2z, 1r, 2s, 1ax, 2f. I felt that the program was generic and needed some original moves and choreography. Ina Bauer was nice and spins were pretty good. Music was Nessun Dorma/Turnadot (GROAN!).

5. DeMarco- 3s (2foot and turnout), 2t, 2z-2r (fall on 2nd part), 2.0axel 2foot, 2f, 2r (hand down), 2.0 axel stepout). I noted that she had good attack. Spins were ok, final spin was very nice. Overall, I liked the program, but she seemed to have some moments of standing around where she was ahead of her music or forgot what to do....ahh-- but that's what these comps are for, to work out the kinks and figure out where you need the practice before regionals.

6. Russo- 1f-2t, 2z-2t, 1ax, 1f?, 1r, 2s, maybe missed a jump. Weak positions on most spins, speed was ok. Could use more originality and excitement. Music was Gone With the Wind.

7 and 8 Gallo and Ciamella had rough skates.

Didn't see any Jr Men today.

Novice Men FS (I sense neither was skating close to their best, this was a major tossup and it was reflected in the ordinals)

1. B. Chin- 2f, 3s (underrotated, stepout), 2z-2r?, 2r, waxel, 3t (came out on 2feet), 2z. Needs to skate with more conviction and speed, but the final spin was very good.

2. Daniel Eison- 3t-2t, 2z-2t, and 2f was the clean jump content. Falls on 2ax, 3r, 3s, 3t, 3s attempts, but they all looked fully rotated. He just seemed pretty off compared to Liberty and maybe have been sick here. Nice final scratch spin, spread eagle, pretty good spins, fleet footwork in the middle, nice use of arms and upper body tension. If he landed the 2ax I would have had him 1st no question.

Novice Ladies Group B FS
1. Manzouri- 2ax (2foot), 3s-2t, 2r? (maybe triple?), 2ax, 2f, 2f turn 2r, tano 2r. Program to violin music maybe Vanessa Mae included a Biellman and some dramatic footwork, overall good, somewhat strange but not bad.

2. Kulsa- 2z-2t, 2r-2r, 2f? (stepout), 2s, 2.25 ax, 2r. Spins pretty good, program needs more excitement. Skating quality not bad. Slow, dreamy, somewhat lifeless music that put me to sleep.

3. Stubbolo- 2f, 2.0 ax stepout, 2r-2r, 2f-2t, 2s, 2t, 2z-2t, fall on 2r. Good spins. Overall OK not bad.

4. Panagakos- fall on 2ax attempt, another fall on 2ax attempt, 2z-2t-2r good, 2f to 2t, 2r, 2z. Good spins, nice movement, footwork pretty good, overall solid and strong after the opening falls. Keep working on that 2ax and she could be a strong contendor for regionals.

5. White- 1ax (stepout), 2r-1t, 2f to 2s, 2ax (seemed clean to me), 2z-2r (foot down), 2f, spins ok. Not bad! Nice presentation to music that may have been Yanni.

6.Haupsburg- 2f, fall on 2s, 2t, 2.0 ax, 1z, 2r-2r, 2r-2r. Spins weak. Overall ok. Skated to Carmen.

7. J. Syken- 2ax-2t nice, falls on attempts at 3f, 3s, 3t, and 3s again (all fully rotated but couldn't quite hold the landings, kind of a downward spiral after the first flip error), 2z and 2r good. Great layback spin, pretty good footwork, nice complete program that held her up to a high standard despite the falls. Strong skating, love the program and music to Prince of Egypt.

8. Perri- 2r-2r, 2z, 2.25 ax, 2f-2r, 2f-2r again?, 2t. Skated to Beatles in a costume very similar to Sasha Cohen's orange and red trim Malaguena costume, spins need improvement. Cool program and idea though, nice to hear some Beatles now and then-- it seems to work for skating.

9. Esposito- 1f, 2f-2r-2r, 2.25 salchow bad stepout, other clean jumps were 2r, 2t, and 2s. Spins pretty good, I think the music was Nutcracker.

10. Grotticelli- 1f to 2t, fall on 2ax, 1ax, 2s, 2r, 2f turnout, 2z?. Nice fast opening with a strong and gorgeous combination spin. Great stretch/extension. Good spirals, gifted presentation. Unfortunately, I felt that the music and choreography didn't build to a satisfying ending. And it was a rough jumping night, I suppose that may have contributed to the overall effect. With the jumps she'll be a contendor.

11. Barreto- 2r, 2t, 3s stepout-2t fall, 2t ok, fell or popped all other jumps. Nice upright spin with leg pulled up, Biellman, gorgeous spins. Music was Barber of Seville with a beat...

12. Anzalone only landed 2f and 2r clean but had a nice layback position, good spirals and spins as well.

13. Corinotis landed a few double jumps but overall had a rough skate and needs to improve on spins.

INTERMEDIATE MEN FS
1. Quadrino- 2z-2r 2foot and stepout, 2f 2foot and stepout to 2t, 2r, 2ax (cheat?), 2r, 2s, 1ax, 2z. Good spins, nice mover, good speed and spread eagle. Harry Potter was the music, like it.

2. Sun- 2r to 3t fall, 2f, 2ax-2t (a little tight), 2f, 3s?, 2f, 2ax-2t tight again. Great flexible spins. Music was Michael Weiss' short from 2000, Tarus Bulba (spelling?). I felt that first and 2nd here was a tossup and personally had Sun in first but Quadrino had a pretty good skate so the result was fine by me.

3. Vays- clean content was 2r, 2f, 2t, 2s, 1ax to 2r, 2f. Spins pretty good, but no combination jumps and hopefully he can up the tech content by regionals.

4. Goujjjane- 2f-2t, 1ax, 2r?, 2f stepout, 2t to 2s, 2z-2t stepout, 2f. Bailed on a camel spin. Overall skated rather slow and spins need improvement. Barber of Seville was music.

5. O'Grady- 2r-2r turnout, 2f-2r, 1ax, 2s-2?, 2f, 2t. Fall on footwork, spins need work.

6. Budde- Music was Take Five, he landed a 2r and 1ax and maybe a couple other jumps, spins were fine. I have to admit I was trying to figure out transportation plans so was distracted during his skate. Sigh, I want a car. :p

INT LADIES FS GROUP 1
1. Sacks- 2f-2t, 2r-2r, missed the axel so don't know if it was 1 or 2, 2t-2t-2t, 2z?, 2t. I was having problems with jump ID's for some reason, I think I was distracted. Great spins, I had her in first regardless of what kind of axel it was, she did a great job.

2. Martino- 2f, fall on 2ax, 2z-2r, 2r, 2f-2t, fall on 2z. Music was Rach, program included a cool Charlotte with nice stretch, good layback, lots of joy and life in this performance, good use of arms, expressive, catchfoott spin, wonderful awareness of position and great positions achieved, program was strong...can you tell I was impressed? This is really a skater who makes you sit up and take notice of her extraordinary talents on the ice.

3. Mani- 2f-2r, good airy 1ax, 2z-2t stepout, fall on 2s, 2r, 1z, 1ax to 2s. Great job with the spins, nice program overall. She skated to Chess and I liked her version better than Petrova/Tikhonov, world bronze medalists. Actually glad a single skater did this, I'd like to see this program again.

4. Bloom- fall on 2ax, 2z-2r, 1t, 2r, 2s, 2t, seemingly requisite fall for this competition on the final 2z- a lot of people were doing that! Pretty good layback, very nice spin combination.

5. Reno- 1ax, 2z-2t-2r, 2r-1r, 2f, hops and a fall on footwork maybe? Good spins, overall ok, skated to Zigenwesiguen (or however u spell that!)

Nothing amazing beyond this point. Though I do have to commend 9th place Denny for skating to Lark Ascending-- this is wonderful skating music and it doesn't get used enough. Jumpwise this was a very poor skate but her spins were nice, including a layback and camel. I really enjoyed this despite the falls.

Judging for this event seemed pretty accurate, I had the same top 5 as it turned out.

INT LADIES FS GROUP 2
1. Makarova- 2r, 2r-2s, 2f, 2ax?, 2z?, 2r-2r. Good spins including Biellman, energetic skate to happy jazzy music.

2. Au- 2z-2r, 2f, 2r-2r, 2f, 1ax, 2s. This girl can skate! Never heard of her before but she came out with a nice fast layback, overall skated fast with good coverage, seemed really secure and strong. Music sounded a little like Bond.

3. D'Agostino- 2f, 2z-2r, 2s, 2r stepout, 2ax (2foot), 2f-2t, 2z. Music was Swan Lake. Good speed, nice lift, solid and impressive.

4. Chodhury- 2z, tano 2f, tano 2r, tano 2z-2r, 2f-2f. Music was My Sweet and Tender Beast. Good spiral, Biellman, nice job. I didn't note an axel, not sure if I missed it or she didn't try one-- but all the 'tano jumps in the world won't beat a clean 2axel or 3jump. It looks cool though, and I appreciate her originality.

5. Riordan- 2z-2t-2r stepout, fall on 2ax, 2f, 2r, 2t?, 2f-2t. Excellent camel spin, good spins all around. Skated to East of Eden, good job here.

6. Strauss- 2z, fall on 2ax, 2t-2r fall, 2.5 salchow, 2r-2r, 2z-1t, 2r. Nice job, skated to Carnival of Animals included The Swan among others.

7. Rouf- 2z-1t, 2t, 2r-2r, fall on 2f, 2z ok. Not sure what happened with the axel. Music was Don Quixote, performance was ok but nothing special to me.

Nothing too great beyond this...judging in this group seemed fine too.
*** A note about some crazy judging I noticed on the results sheet...for Intermediate Ladies Group A FS, most of the judges were more or less on target with their placements, but one judge Frank Heaney had the most ridiculously off placements, it's hard to imagine what he was seeing. His ordinals were as follows...

1. (first place skater) - 3rd
2. (second place skater)- 12
3. 5
4. 8
5. 2
6. 1
7. 4
8. 9
9. 7
10. 14
11. 10
12. 6
13. 15
14. 10
15. 17
16. 13
17. 16

Yikes!

And check out Werner Freitag who judged Novice Ladies Group 2...
1. 8 (for Manzouri, who was to me the unquestionable winner of this group with by far the best jumping and other good qualities)
2. 4
3. 3
4. 10 (no way she deserved to be that low)
5. 9
6. 7
7. 12 (no way)
8. 2 (no way)
9. 6
10. 5
11. 1!!!! (for Barreto who, yes had awesome spins and a stepout of a 3s, but no 2ax and only 3 clean double jumps, the hardest being a loop, and no combinations)
12. 11
13. 13

What was this guy watching??

Kudos to other judges who did a fine job, including, among many others, Coco Shean, Shawn Rettstatt, Chavez, Mlina...overall the judging at this event was good, and it was fun for a day-- I might come back if they have it again next year.

Haribobo,
Thanks for the Moran results! I skate with Kevin Sun in Chesapeake , Virginia and he works HARD on the ice! I was glad to see him do well!
