(apologies if this had been posted earlier, but I can't spot it)
A preview show for most of the Canadian team. Participants to include Jennifer Robinson, Joannie Rochette, Annie Bellemare, Michelle Currie, Leah Hepner, Emanuel Sandhu, Jeffrey Buttle, Fedor Andreev, Ben Ferreira, Nicholas Young, Anabelle Langlois and Patrice Archetto, Elizabeth Putnam and Sean Wirtz, Valerie Marcoux and Craig Buntin, Pascale Bergeron and Rob Davison, Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe, Josée Piché and Pascal Denis and Judith Longpre and Shae Zukiwsky.
I'm bummed because I'm going to be in Kitchener ... but a week too late!
According to the Skate Canada release, ticket info is "to come," but they're often quite slow with info, so if anyone knows anything more recent ...

I'd heard that this was coming and I'm definitely excited for it!
I think that during the day the skaters will be previewing their new programs...but the public isn't allowed in. But since I'm a university student in Waterloo (WLU) you can bet that I'll be at that show with bells on! :)

I'm soo jelous of all you guys getting to see it...Why can't high school in October, or it might help if I didn't live like 5 hours away...
Dispite that, I think it is a GREAT idea to get all the national team together for this. It will really boost everyones spirts going in to the Grand Prix circuit!
I just read that Piperno/Dougherty (Jr. Cdn Champs) will be there. I don't know how reliable the information is though.

Wheee! I just got back from holidays to find my tickets waiting for me. Section 14 Row 5, so they should be OK. I wonder how tickets are selling? There hasn't been much lead time or advertising.
Has Skate Canada ever staged a pre-season show before, or is it just that this year everyone (Elvis) needs more ice time before the competitive season begins? Kitchener is an easy sell for skating shows, even though we don't get CSOI anymore (BooHoo).
I'm looking forward to seeing the new crop of skaters and plan to cheer them on to a great season.

Bourne and Kraatz to make special appearance at National Team skating show
Fans attending the upcoming Skate Canada National Team ice show in Kitchener, Ont.
will be treated to a special appearance by 2003 World Ice Dance Champions and 10-time
Canadian Ice Dance Champions Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz.
In addition to Bourne and Kraatz, three-time Canadian Ladies Champion Josée Chouinard
will also attend the event to sign autographs for fans prior to the show.
This will be Bourne and Kraatz's first skating appearance in Canada since they won the
World Championship title in Washington, D.C. in March.
"We're very happy to skate in the show," said Bourne. "Skate Canada has been very
supportive, and it's our way of saying thank you and, given that the show is in support of
the Athlete Trust, it's also a way for us to give back to the skaters."
The show, entitled The Stars Come Out to Shine, will take place on Sept. 13 at the
Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, and will also feature members of the 2003-2004 Skate
Canada National Team, as well as special guest, three-time World Champion and seven-time
Canadian Champion Elvis Stojko, who announced his return to eligible skating last spring.
Members of the 2003-2004 Skate Canada National Team who will be performing include
2003 Canadian Ladies Champion Jennifer Robinson, Joannie Rochette, Annie Bellemare,
Michelle Currie, 2003 Canadian Men's Champion Emanuel Sandhu, Jeffrey Buttle, Fedor Andreev,
Ben Ferreira, Nicholas Young, Anabelle Langlois and Patrice Archetto, Elizabeth Putnam and
Sean Wirtz, Valerie Marcoux and Craig Buntin, Pascale Bergeron and Rob Davison,
Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe, Josée Piché and Pascal Denis, and Judith Longpre and Shae Zukiwsky.
The current Canadian Junior Ice Dance Champions, Melissa Piperno and Liam Dougherty,
are also making an appearance.
The event will benefit the Skate Canada Athlete Trust, which provides support through a
number of grants to athletes at various stages of development and competitive levels as
part of the pursuit of competitive excellence. Funds for the Athlete Trust are generated
mainly through donations and tour revenues.
In total, Skate Canada provided over $1.4 million last year in direct support to athletes in
the form of training grants, scholarships and event travel support.
"This event promises to be a very exciting one for both the fans and the skaters," said
Skate Canada CEO Pam Coburn. "It is an excellent opportunity for fans to preview the
new skating programs of Canada's best skaters before they head off to international
competitions."
Tickets can be purchased at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium box office at (519) 745-0303.
Ticket prices range from $50 for a VIP ticket, which includes VIP seating at the show and
admission to the post-event reception where guests can meet the athletes, $25 for adults
and $20 for seniors and students.

I'm just home from the show. A very low attendance. They announced that the show made $20,000 for the skater's development fund. I will give a rough idea of what happened, and leave it to the experts to describe the jumps and music.
First of all, Elvis was not in the building! He sent his regrets because he was sick. I wonder if he will actually be ready when the competitions begin?
The first half included the fourth and fifth ranked skaters. Nicholas Young was entertaining. he must have done his exhibition number, since he slid across the ice and did other non-standard moves. Ben Ferreira was OK, so were Piche and Denis. Marcoux and Buntin did not seem to have improved much over last year. Other skaters were Piperno and Dougherty, Michelle Currie, Bergeron and Davison, Longpre and Zukjiwsky. The skaters in this half were all slow, and no-one did a combination jump. One note, why had I not noticed before how good looking Liam Douherty is?
The second half included third, second and first ranked skaters. Putnam and Wirtz did their routine from last year, and skated well. Annie Bellemare looked happy and confident, even though she missed a jump. Too bad she and Michelle Currie used the same music,"Roxy". Wing and Lowe's dance needs a lot of work, it was rough and slow. Fedor Andreev was wearing a decent costume (guess his Mom no longer chooses his outfits) and skated well to Mac the Knife. Joannie Rochette wore a bodysuit and had quite a fast, exciting program. Too bad she fell twice and double footed some jumps. It should do well in competition with more practise.
Jeff Buttle came out looking like Peter Pan. He even made Emanuel Sandhu look...well...straight. I don't know what his music was, but it didn't do much for me. The crowd gave him a standing O. Just hope the judges like it. Langlois and Archetto skated excellently. They did two leaps of faith that had the audience gasping. I hope they continue to have good skates all year. Jennifer Robinson did Teach me Tiger, my absolute least favourite number. Cringe! Slow and two footed jumps, but she really sold the sizzle. Emanuel Sandhu skated to Ave Maria, and I have great hope for this program. His jumps were good and his expression controlled. He looked good, too. There was a lot of Toller Cranston in this choreography, IMO. Keep going on this note, Emanuel. Please!
Special guest stars were Bourne and Kraatz. They are in a class by themselves and got a standing O even before they skated. They did the Arabian Nights routine, got another standing O and did a short encore. They were perfection on ice. It makes me sad to think that I will probably never have the opportunity to see them skate again.
I hope the show gave the skaters a chance to improve their performances in front of a live audience before the competitive season begins. Good luck to all the skaters.

What, you didn't buy the t-shirt that said "I support Skate Canada" ????
I like Jeff Buttle and I was really happy to see him skate his competition long program. The rest of the skaters did exhibition numbers, some have the ability to rise above their material. Some don't.
The arena should have been packed and it was half empty, a real shame, several of us in the audience were wondering how it even managed to raise the $20,000 mentioned, even though that's great for the athlete's trust.
But again, I like Jeff Buttle!

No, I was wearing my skatingforums.com shirt! It was very comfortable and just the right weight for the arena.
I like Jeff Buttle, too. But this year his program doesn't do it for me. These things happen sometimes. I have to give him credit for doing a "serious" program, it should impress the judges.

Have you never seen Jeff's programs before?? He HAS done serious... last year as a matter of fact. The music I do believe is "Samson and Delilah" (SP?) Jeff is very talented and I liked his costume very much, it fit the music well (he did have a cream colored shirt the first time I saw him skate this program at the Mariposa Gala, this was much nicer for him.

I bet with friends that Elvis would show up, so I guess I better go count my pennies because I'm paying for a lot of coffee now. Maybe we should do double-or-nothing on Octoberfest. Hmm.
Putnam and Wirtz were the topic of our drive home, couldn't stop talking about them, how they match well and that they're not the gorilla and midget style of pairs.

Arabian Nights? Is this new? I saw a clip of their performance on TV and it looked like parts of their Adagio WC winning Free Dance but the music was hard to hear on TV and didn't sound like Adagio.
I'll be seeing Shae and Victor skate at least twice before the end of the year. In Hamilton and in London.

Actually, I don't think it would have done that well out here. I know for one I wouldn't have gone. Not because I don't support the skaters, but because I don't see that Skate Canada needs a Skater Trust Fundraiser. I wonder just how much money actually will go into the skaters trust, and hoe much will go elsewhere.....
This event didn't get much publicity and I wouldn't have known about it except for the people on here who posted. My parents didn't know about it and they are in Ontario close to KW. Heck, my dad is on the board of a skating club and they recived no info about it

A couple years ago they had something in KW called the superstar challenge or something like that. It took place in Aug and because it wasn't well publicized the arena was less than 1/2 full. I actually only went because they gave our skating club 10 free tickets. When you don't advertise you can't expect the place to be full...
Whoever was in charge of PR didn't do the best job. It's also very early in the season and many skaters, especially rec skaters who might hear about events like these thru the various skating clubs are usually not skating right now. It's fall session, so if this event was held a little later, say Oct I think there would have been more people

I was in the KW area last week and kept hearing about this on the radio - if they limited their advertising to just KW no wonder the attendance wasn't that great. Seems to me they also said some of the profit was going to the KW skating club but I could have been wrong. This should have been a good location because it is relatively close to London, Hamilton and Toronto but if they only started advertising last week - many folks may have had other plans. I know by the time I heard about it I had other committments. Too bad I would have loved to see the "stars come out!" especially B & K.

I was there and I was a little disappointed that almost everyone did a show program as I had expected to see new competitive programs for the coming season but oh well. Here's my review.
(all are show programs unless otherwise noted)
Melissa Piperno & Liam Dougherty - Skated their OD starting with Greased Lightning. My first thought was was *couldn't they find some more original music?!* It was quite cute and nicely done (except for a little mismatch on their twizzles) but fairly simple. Thanks to them for doing one of their competitive programs.
Michelle Currie - Skated to Roxy from the movie Chicago and skated ok but was somewhat boring.
Pascale Bergeron & Rob Davison - Skated to some familiar sounding disco type song. They looked kinda cute but I admit that they don't seem like very strong skaters (yet) for being on the senior national team.
Nicholas Young - Skated to I Feel Good with some comedy stuff in which he didn't pull off that well but he looked very relaxed and had great speed and stuff.
Judith Longpre & Shae Zukiwsky - They did sort of a sexy number in what I think are their OD costumes for this year which aren't terrible costumes but don't really go together or with their OD (or their exhibition for that matter) in my opinion. They skated quite well and I really enjoyed their program.
Valerie Marcoux & Craig Buntin - Skated to a very familiar blues song and looked pretty much the same as always. I really like how she gets down into her death spirals but they had trouble getting out of it this time.
Ben Ferriera - He did a fun/flirty program which was quite well done and one of the better polished ones of the night in my opinion.
Josée Piché & Pascal Denis - Skated to To Where You Are. They had some nice moments but they had too many lifts I think. (and a lot of them looked quite similar)
Elizabeth Putnam & Sean Wirtz - Also skated to To Where You Are, their exhibition that they put together at Canadians last year. It looked pretty much the same as it did there. Nice lines and stuff but not really any emotion.
Annie Bellmare - Also skated to Roxy but did a much better job I think. I really liked her dress too!
Megan Wing & Aaron Lowe - They used a slow French (?) song which got a little monotonous but some parts were nice. They had this cool lift where she was lying flat out and he was in a shoot-the-duck. (although he stuggled a little with it)
Fedor Andreev - Skated to Mack the Knife and looked fairly polished. (and Russian) It was pretty good.
Joannie Rochette - Skated to some song about wanting everything black. I was very impressed by the change in her skating! She looked way more mature and into her music. As always, she had excellent speed -- she actually did this funky jump thing and had so much speed I didn't know how she held onto the landing but then she fell. She also fell on a "normal" jump (forget what it was) but she is looking really good this year. 8-)
Jeff Buttle - Kudos for doing his long program! It was quite good but he's looking a little more girly this year which I don't enjoy.
Anabelle Langlois & Patrice Archetto - Skated to this really familiar slowish song but I don't know the name. They were very good as usual, and did some cool things to highlight the music.
Jennifer Robinson - Did her Teach me Tiger program and looked very relaxed (and tanned!) and like she was having fun. She had a new dress for this which was sort of a dark grey shiny leather thing. I think I liked her other dress better for this program except for the whole holes-in-the-sides-look-too-big thing.
Emanuel Sandhu - Skated to Ava Maria and did some barre work using the boards at the beginning. I found it a little boring.
Shae-Lynn Bourne & Victor Kraatz - First of all, their costumes look WAY expensive! Shae-Lynn had a unitard literally COVERED in something sparkley -- and these weren't your run-of-the-mill sequins or rhinestones either. That being said, their costumes were quite strange. Anyhoo. They skated to some Arabian music and it appeared that she was a snake (her costume was green) and he was the snake charmer (he work this paso-come-genie burgandy outfit) although it looked more like she was charming him. They were definately the best skaters there -- perhaps also the weirdest. I was hoping that they would go back to normal now that they aren't trying to impress the judges but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. :(
I was also there. There's really not much else to add to the other reviews. I did take pictures, and will post them as soon as I can.

Thanks for all the reviews.
My only worry about Liz and Sean is they might be too well matched size wise to get a decent triple twist. I hope I'm proved wrong on that one.
Shae and Victor's program sounds really intruging. Hope they do it at Kurt's show.

I believe you may be right - throughout the night they kept referring to the great Kitchener audience. Does SC not realize that fans will travel to see shows? They should have advertised more widely, or at least put out press releases to regional media if the budget was tight. Kitchener is an easy drive from several other cities in the region, including Toronto.

The (SP?) meant spelling, not short program ;)
Also, while Skate Canada did write in their press release that the skaters would be doing their new competitive programs, they failed to mention that on the same day, all of the skaters were monitored for both their short & long programs, before the show started (I heard some of them had this start at 9 in the morning)..
By the time the show started, most skaters were tired out and Skate Canada even suggested that they do their exhibitions.
Edited to add-- apparently these monitorings were for judges to mark skaters on the new code of points system and then tell them how they can improve, etc. Good idea, but bad day to do it I'd think..

I had originally heard - from arena_guy - at RIM that the skaters were to have their judging monitoring on the Thursday, then the Friday there. It didn't happen and I then I also heard that it was all at the Aud. Somehow I still expected to see competition programs, that it was a simulation, not an exhibition.
I also heard that the benefit was a last minute thing, the National team session was for the new judging system and monitoring, and then someone got the bright idea to make a show out of it, thus the late publicity. I have no idea if this is true. Either way, it was at least a month before the show occurred that it was finally announced, and they (whoever they are) should have then put publicity into high gear.
There were so many ways that this show could have publicized and I'm not really sure where to lay the blame, club, section or Skate Canada. This should have been a huge show, and raised lots more money for the skater's trust and for KWSC - although I have a love/hate relationship with KWSC.
There were teeny posters on the wall at RIM park. Well, no one is skating at RIM right now except test and competitive, the bulk of the clubs skaters are learn to skate and they aren't in the building yet.
The starskaters that would have been able to come were not able to that night, because of a dress rehearsal for an upcoming show, this was scheduled for the same time as the benefit show. D'oh!
I did see lots of KWSC bigwigs in the audience, who of course knew of the show, and the usual Section people working as volunteers, good job.
There was a notice on Skate Canada website. Also one in the members only section, but honestly, no one I know checks members only on a regular basis. I saw it when doing some club business. I did get an email from Skate Canada, finally, last week that announced Bourne & Kraatz's appearance.
They did advertise on the radio, CHYM-FM, which is the skating market kind of station, but that is exclusive to K-W.
None of the skating clubs, or Regions were sent any information. Well our region doesn't meet that often anyway, and our skating club is the same as KW, not really in full swing yet, however, certainly that would have started some word-of-mouth outside of K-W. We were doing registration and had our bulletin board up, could have put up a poster.
Some coaches knew, those that know people at KW, some didn't. In the summertime most skating info comes from coaches. There was a lot of buzz, the week before the show, and then it was apparently difficult to get through to the box office.
Besides all that,
It would have been nice to have a couple of guest skates from some of the better, but not National team skaters who are from the area - like Chris Mabee, or the really good Synchro teams, Nexxice or Stamford, to round out the show.

The following article indicates why Elvis didn't make it to this event PLUS it indicates that the skaters were to be doing their competitive programs for this year.

Elvis not smiling
Stojko feeling under the weather, misses training camp
By STEVE BUFFERY -- Toronto Sun
KITCHENER -- Elvis Stojko was forced to miss this weekend's national figure skating team training camp and exhibition skate, but not because he ran out of Geritol.
Ol' Elvis, at 31 the senior skater on the International Skating Union circuit, has been floored with an undisclosed, mononucleosis-type virus.
"He has been under the weather for the last two or three weeks," Skate Canada national teams director Gayle McClelland said yesterday. "He's very fatigued and he's disappointed that he's not here. But even with the show (last night), he wasn't up to doing it."
Not exactly the start to the season Stojko was looking for in his comeback. This weekend's event, held at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, allows Canada's national team skaters the opportunity to perform their competitive programs while being marked under the guidelines of the new ISU judging system, which will be used in all senior Grand Prix events this season.
Stojko, three-time world singles champion, is scheduled to compete next month at the MasterCard Skate Canada competition at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.
Skate Canada officials plan to put Stojko, who is making a return to competitive skating this year after retiring following the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, in touch with team physician Dr. Julia Alleyne this week to try to get a handle on his health problems.
As for the rest of the national team skaters, each received a computerized scoring print-out from yesterday's training session from the judges on hand. The print-outs illustrate how they would be marked and how to best improve their programs under the new Code of Points system. Code of Points was implemented this year in the wake of the scoring scandal in the pairs competition at Salt Lake. The system is geared towards forcing the judges to reward skaters specific marks based on technical elements.
"This weekend's event allows us to get some feedback on how to improve (our programs), how to get more points and more bonus points, and that's important knowledge we need to have before we start (the season)," said Jennifer Robinson, reigning Canadian senior ladies singles champion. "There's a lot of hope riding on this new system."
The Code of Points system was used for the first time last week at the Nebelhorn Trophy Grand Prix in Obertsdorf, Germany and Canadian skaters came away with four medals. Based on their impressive results, the feeling was that Canadian skaters were the best prepared for the new scoring system.

Does anyone remember exactly what B&K's music was called? And who did the remix for Joannie Rochette's "Painted Black?"

I have seen Emanuel's Ava Maria program before and it is gorgeous, although not "jumpy". I wish this kind of skating received more recognition. His movements are so wonderful to watch.

That is correct, and the title is "Paint It Black"

Am I stupid, because I can't seem to get into your pictures, jeb. It just always pops back to the "enter" screen
It should work if you click on enter to get to the first picture (which is the same as the "cover"), and then keep clicking "next".

Blade1... you posted this on another thread, but I felt it belonged over here so I moved it and I have to say I agree with you and who cares if he has sweat stains???? My lord, there are far more things to worry about in this world! People sweat... deal with it.

I also don't see what the problem w/Jeff's costume is. I've seen worse over the years.
As for sweat stains....The last time I looked, this was a sport wasn't it? Good grief....

OK, I'm the one who said Jeff's costume made him look like Peter Pan. That's because I have a 55 year old copy of the book with a drawing of PP on the cover. He is shown wearing a turqoise V-necked shirt over black tights, with a brown belt around his waist. And that pretty well describes Jeff's costume. None of the pictures I have seen so far show the real colour of Jeff's shirt. They all make it look darker and bluer than it really was...turqoise.
On another board there were many comments about the shirt he wore at Thornhill for this same LP. They said it looked like something from the Flintstones. Sounds like Jeff has been having trouble finding the right look for this program.
I hope Jeff has a good season and fulfils his potential. I won't jinx him and say that he is the NE__ ON_, but I'm sure we can count on Jeff to represent Canada well in the future.
