Does anyone know anything about how the Ladies events went in Thornhill so far? (Summerskate not NACS) And I'm curious to know what happened when the power went out? Also, results are up for some of the events that already took place at http://www.skatecanada-centralontario.com/2003-4%20eventsresults.htm

Not sure how the Summerskate went, but as of 8:00 PM EST the organizers were meeting to decide whether to cancel the event.

I spoke to my daughter in Thornhill. It looks like Summmerskate and the NACS will still be held. As of 8:15 AM EST, the rink needed to add another layer of ice to the surface. The organizers are going to push the events back so the skaters can get in their practices. It means that the competitions will run much later than originally scheduled.

So everything's still on then?! That's good news! Anyone think it'll run into Monday?

I'm just speculating, but my assumption is that organizers will let the event run late tonight and hopefully get back on schedule tomorrow. I think the only source of concern will be the condition of the ice surfaces. I don't know if they use a Zamboni or the Fast Ice system in Thornhill.

They would have lost 14 skating hours last night. There must have been events in progress. Lord knows how they finished those ones. Is there any news

"Due to the power outages affecting the eastern portions of the United States and Canada, the NACS Thornhill events in Canada today began early at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. Results will be posted as soon as available, but due to the blackouts it is unclear exactly when results will be received. Stay tuned, and we'll get the results up as soon as they come in"

right now, power is back on in Toronto(downtown, north york, etobicoke, markham, scarborough). I would say about 75% of the city's power is back on.
if richmond hill has power then thornhill should also have power. thornhill is just north of toronto and closer to richmond hill.

No one has answered the question yet of what happened to all the skating that would have been missed last night (thurs night) due to the power outage. Did they continue it today? How could they possibly fit in everything that was scheduled for today? I'm confused. :??

The events of Thursday that were lost due to the power failure were cancelled. Practices Friday morning were cancelled to get the ice surface back up to scratch. The blackout this afternoon only lasted one hour (rolling blackouts). As long as Thornhill holds power, the events for Saturday and Sunday (including practices) should continue as scheduled.

power seemed fine and dandy after the afternoon blackout .. only lasted about 40 minutes or so.

Does anyone know if the Bayview Go Bus (that stops right in front of the Thornhill rink) is still running from Finch station? I understand buses are running as normal despite the power outtage problems, but I just wanted to confirm that the Go Buses are also running as usual...?

Just remember top 3 NAC's (after short)
Novice Men - William Brewster, Daniel Raad, Patrick Chan
Novice Ladies - Erin Scherrer, an american skater, Mandy Valentine
Novice Dance - Dryborough's, Rosenthal/Taylor, VanVeen/Dawsone or Emard-Lauzon/Boulierre (they're in the 3rd/4th position, just forget who's which)

Wow, those are pretty crazy ordinals for Virtue & Moir! Interesting that the two judges who had them 6th in the CD seemed to appreciate them more in the OD and placed them first, in step with the rest of the panel
Many of the Summer Skate results are also up:
http://www.skatecanada-centralontario.com/Irma/2003%20Summer%20Skate/index.htm
A couple of interesting results in dance...most notably Granata/Fawcett (in their first competition, I think!) finishing ahead of jr silver medalists (and Sabrina's former partner) Girard/Yaeger in the Senior OD. Also Nino & Poje finished ahead of Charpentier/Pelletier in the Junior OD...maybe SC will give N&P a JGP now...
leap of faith

Judge #3 in the CD was a bit questionable it seems. US judge has teams from the US ranked 1,2,3 and 4 with the Canadian teams placed 5,6,7,8
Did anyone else notice this?
Erin F
08-16-2003, 04:59 PM
Yes, I noticed that, too...but to be fair, there seems to be a bit of bias on both sides in the CD, as all 4 Canadian judges had V&M first, while none of the 3 American judges did.
Results are now up for the novice NAC events (at the link in PointBleu's post). Top 3 stayed the same for the ladies and men, and in dance, Drybourgh/Drybourgh stayed in first, with Van Deen/Dawson moving up to second, and Rosenthal/Taylor dropping to third (fourth in the free dance).
At Thornhill, Ashton Tessier finished second in her flight of Jr Ladies to Daniela Cotesta.
Thornhill's doing a great job of getting the results up quickly after the disruptions of the past few days!
Erin F

And just as I finished posting, NAC Jr Dance results came up. Virtue & Moir won with straight firsts, with Lamoureaux & Mee second, and Pratt/Gillies third. A little odd that both dance events had more movement than the singles events!

Samantha and Phillip withdrew from the FD due to an injury Samantha suffered to her left knee. I can provide more details if anyone is interested.

It was serious enough to have her knee put in a brace and schedule an MRI on her return to Boston. What was really nice is that Phillip stuck by her side all day, and the junior team took her out on the ice during the medal ceremony.
During the OD, Phillip's skate hit a rut during a lift when Samantha is being held upside down. She landed hard on her left knee and Phillip landed on top of her. She tried skating this afternoon at practace and re-injured the knee.

It is too bad about Cepican/Lichtor. They did well at Lake Placid.
Also, the USA Novice dance teams didn't end up doing to well (highest team was Rosenthal/Taylor in 3rd).

He probably didn't feel like it. He's signed up for Thornhill many times in the past and didn't show up. Because he didn't skate the short he won't be doing the long as its a combined event

I *really* enjoyed Jeff's skate tonight, and I think his new short program is a knockout! I can't wait to see his LP tomorrow. Once he gets a consistent quad, I think he'll be right up there with the best of them; he sure has the rest of the goods.

Hi Everyone,
I just returned from watching the senior mens' and ladies' SPs. I didn't take notes or anything, but hopefully I can fill you all in on a few interesting details before other people post real reports. =) I apologize in advance for any errors in memory!
MENS
BEN FERREIRA
He started the event, using the same SP as last year. He fell on the quad toe (but it was pretty close) but nailed his 3axel and 3lutz from footwork. All of his footwork was really good and fast. He also had good expression, although maybe not quite as much as at nats.
ELVIS
Apparently the reason he withdrew was because he has some sort of virus. That's what people were saying, anyway.
TAKESHI
Even though his warmup was all right (he landed a couple quads), his skate didn't go too well. His program was to Nina Rota's Romeo and Juliet soundtrack (think Sasha Cohen's show program). He fell on all of his jumps (4toe, 3axel, 3z). His spins were awesome and his expression was the best I've ever seen from him. His footwork was also great. EDIT: My jump descriptions are way off...see below
JEFF
The cleanest program of the night. One mistake: he did a 2toe-3toe instead of the 4toe-2toe. 3axel was great as was his lutz. He spent about 80% of his warmup working on the quad, doing mostly 3toes and falling on his two attempts at four rotations. His music was "Take Five" (jazz song). Awesome presentation (the crowd loved it), amazing spins and footwork. Definitely well deserved in first place. He also stayed to almost the end of the ladies event (past 11pm) to cheer on (loudly!) all of his Mariposa teammates. He seems like *such* a nice guy!!!
Ken Rose also had a pretty good skate. I have no idea why Fedor withdrew. =(
LADIES
Both Signe Ronka and Amanda Billings withdrew (I have no idea why), which was really disappointing for me since I was really looking forward to seeing them both.
JENNIFER ROBINSON
Her music was a sort of jazzy, bug-band tune, although she wore her LP dress from last year. She landed the 3lutz cleanly and tried to go into a 3toe but had to put her hands down. Everyone was REALLY impressed that she went for a 3-3 in the short though, especially a 3z-3t!! She also put her hands down on the 3flip, but her 2axel was fine. I think she just had a bit of an off night, so no major worries.
ADRIANA DESANCTIS
I was really looking forward to seeing her skate but she didn't have a great night. Music: Bolero from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack (Takeshi's show program last season). She fell on her 3z and 3f but landed her 2a. Her flexibility on her spirals was the best in the competition (along with Lauren Wilson). Her spins were also great, as was the overall quality of skating. She also stayed late (sitting beside Jeff B) to cheer her teammates on. Again, like Jen, it seemed like it was just a rough night for her and nothing to be too concerned about.
LAUREN WILSON: I don't remember too much, but she did have trouble on the jumps (both the lutz and the flip). But she has a really nice program.
I wasn't too impressed with MEAGHAN DUHAMEL. Problems on the jumps (lutz and flip) and just seemed a bit slow and not to be rotating very quickly. JMHO, however.
OTHER NOTES
I saw Josee Chouinard and Jean-Michel Bombardier there. He is really buff!! Kris Wirtz was also there watching, talking to a lot of people. From what I saw, Lee Barkell seems like one of the nicest guys in the world. He was always smiling and chatting with everyone. I also saw Doug Leigh briefly.
That's about it for now. I hope that I at least provided a bit of useful information! =)
Edited to add: Shanique was GREAT!! She has such great presentation and expression. 3z-2t was clean. I think her only error was singling the axel, but I'm not positive.

Takeshi nailed his axel, and the quad toe was a gimongous double.
As for shanique, she did the double axel .... she came out forward on the triple flip with 2 1/2 rotations or so. Great skate for her in nailing the lutz though.
in novice dance (nac) The Dryboroughs, Van Veen/Dawson and even Emard-Lauzon/Boulierre were honestly light years ahead with their freedances.

Thank you for the corrections, Roogu!
This is probably a *really* stupid question, but since Jr. ladies split into three groups yesterday, am I correct in assuming that they are rearranging the groups (like they do in normal competitions) so that, for instance, all of the top ladies skate in the final group that starts at 1:10 today? Thanks!!:)

Just recieved an update about Elvis...
I've heard that he's been having boot and blade problems, which is why he's been struggling to land the triple axel. He had to switch blades and have them altered before they worked right. Now I dont know if he has a virus or whether this is the reason he pulled out.
Hopefully now that he's got his boot/blade problem sorted out he'll be back to his old self

Did anyone attend any of the early morning events? I missed these events while trying to figure out a way to get to Thornhill despite the subway system being down. :x I'm particularly interested on reports of Senior and Junior Dance (non-NACS), and on how Dube/Davison looked in Junior Pairs. If anyone saw any of these events and can post a brief report, it would be much appreciated!

Use the Toronto bus system until you get to Finch and Young. This is where you change Bus systems from the TTC to the GO Bus at the York Regional Bus Terminal. Take the Bayview Go Bus that starts out on Young at Finch and then travels northward to Steeles and then East to Baysview and then goes northward. Ask to be let off at Thornhill Square. There are two rinks.
Been there to compete at SC COS Adult Spring Skate this past spring, earning a Silver FS and Bronze interpretive FS, and used the subway and bus to get there.
Note: You should get yourself a day pass for TTC and pay as you go with the GO Bus. They are separate systems, so you have to pay for both separately. Found out when I was heading to my competition. I was lucky the GO Bus driver let me on to get to my competition. Said I was holding up the bus and saw that I had a competition to skate.
Hope this helps.

I did not see the Junior Pairs long programs (the schedule was not kind to Pairs fans as they had Junior Pairs and Senior Pairs on at the same time in opposite rinks today). I did see the Junior Pairs short yesterday and thought that all four teams were excellent and if I recall correctly if this is Junior Pairs for 2004 the event at Canadians should be excellent (in fact I think the Junior Shorts that I saw yesterday were better than most of the Senior Longs that I saw today with the exception of Cosford and Maguire who look very promising given that she has only been skating pairs for a couple of months). From what I can recall:
Junior Pair Short:
Dube/Davison - graceful quite skating, look wonderful together - she is so small you don't realize that he isn't a very big guy himself. He was in black and she was in pink music was very soft and romantic. Elements - great required lift with variations(Junior Pairs was in the small Thornhill rink because of the NAC and the ability to see the full ice surface is compromised so anything done in the corners is a challenge to see) throw triple sal (I think), sbs double flips in perfect unison and nice and high, nice twist, pair spin, death spiral - their only mistake if I can recall is a trip by him in footwork. They are excellent given their short time together and great choice by Skate Canada if indeed they have two junior internationals - they should do very well internationally.
Findley and Mattatall - again rather soft romantic music can't remember the costumes - nice unison and speed and they have really imporved since I saw them last. Side by side jumps (I think double axels) that she popped and cannot recall what he did. Nice lift - unusual extension of one of his hands on this required lift, very nice pair spin making use of her flexibility, other elements were fine - she almost fully rotated the throw triple (from what I could see) but fell on the landing.
Rowell and Schmucher - kind of jazzy type music - nice variations on the lift (walk through etc.) not as smooth as the first two teams and she has really grown, can't remember a lot about their program but I think they did side by side double axels and they didn't land their throw couldn't tell if it was a double or triple.
Piche and Detrick - another romantic piece (custumes purplish in colour) They had a better warm up than skate but still skated well, nice lift but without variations, twist, may have been short on the death spiral, their side by side spins seemed to have lots of rotations and at one point got very close, side by side double axels can't recall what happened but they didn't work, I thought she was going to land the throw triple sal but at the last minute she fell - good attempt.
Hope this helps - based on other postings on this board the top three teams here have international assignments - Dube and Davison should do quite well and in my opinion will be hard to beat at Canadians and are my new favourite team! Anyone know who is coaching them did he move or did she?

Thanks for the report! Would you be able to tell us what elements Cosford/Maguire did in their long program?

Re: what elements they did
Erin:
This as the previous report is going from memory but some things I am pretty sure of including that she landed a least one of the throw triples (they did sal and loop) someone said she landed the one in the short program too. They also did side by side triple sals and triple toes - (I know one these - the first was likely in a jump sequence) i was watching her and it looks to me like she landed both of them (outside chance that she doubled and I didn't catch it but I am pretty sure she didn't). They had double twist and several lifts - one with quite a few position changes - I think it started from a star position. Sorry I can't remember more - almost like Dube and Davison that I was so captivated by the performance that the elements seemed to flow from one to the next.

Does anyone know why the results from Summerskate aren't being updated? Were the events cancelled? EDIT:Ooops some results are coming up, does anyone know if the Pre-Novice Ladies events (group 3-7) were cancelled?

Senior Men's Long:
Didn't take notes, but here's how I remember it:
Takeshi HONDA - Takeshi wore all black (including the gloves), skated to Warsaw Concerto. Lots of Morosov footwork, and reminiscent of Yags old program where he had the piano keys on his costume, as Takeshi mimed playing piano keys in different spots. First quad had a hand down, second quad was gorgeous in combination. He fell hard on a triple axel, but the rest was good. Definitely deserved first place.
Jeffrey BUTTLE - New LP is gorgeous (sorry don't know the music). Unfortunately he fell on both axels, but the rest of the triples were there. Didn't appear to go for a quad, but may have tripled it. Best choreography I've seen in a long time. Absolutely stunning.
Ben FERREIRA - Same LP from last year I believe, wearing pin striped suit. No quad, but got the axel in....strong skate for Ben. His flow and jump technique seems much improved this year. I hear he's been working with David Wilson, and it shows.
Chris MABEE - Performance of the night! Chris skated this program with confidence and a great fun attitude. First triple axel of the night (only one other than Ben's), Chris exudes happiness and got probably one of the best fan responses. He went down on the second axel, but this is becoming a secure jump for him, as he landed lots in practise. This kid is going nowhere but up.
Kenny ROSE - Kenny didn't have a great skate, doubled lots of jumps. Brightly coloured top with waist sash, black pants. He's got great speed, and I look forward to seeing this program again.
Hugh YIK - Hugh had a good night, missing his axel but landing many triple jumps. Another skater with amazing speed, and beautiful soft knees. Skated to the Rocketeer soundtrack, which I absolutely love. Beautiful performance.

Ben's new LP is to The Untouchables which would make sense for the pin striped suit.
Last year's program was to the soundtrack of Durango and was an Irish piece :)
I can't wait to see the new program.:)
Thanks for the reports!

Takeshi's first quad was also clean, albeit a little low .. hand didn't touch. He singled the axel .... never fell on the triple.
Jeff's quad was tripled .... but everyone's right, program is brilliant.
Ben nailed 2 triple axels, but lots of doubled jumps.

To clarify, Kevin Wheeler was coaching them at Thornhill. But they do train full-time in QC.

I was really impressed with Marc-Olivier Bosse. Not his jumps but his musical interpretation. Does anyone know anything about him?

I have my digital pictures from Thornhill (just of Jeff so far) online, but I just got my film back and will be adding some better quality ones since the digital can only do so much with fast skating....

some of the pictures are tempermental if a picture does not come up, just right click on the image(S) that don't come up and right click on it and hit show picture...don't ask me why and sorry for the inconvience.
