Great topic, but it's so hard to choose!!! :(
Michelle Kwan's Red Violin costume. I loved the deep color. It was perfect for her and for the program.

I like quite a lot of costumes, but the one costume that stands out for me as really suiting the music was the beigey/browny dress Michelle Kwan wore for The Feeling Begins. I especially liked the open back with the spider-webbing like string design thingamybob (technical terms ahoy!). Ooh, and Ann Patrice's Madame Butterfly dress, gorgeous.

I loved Gordeeva & Grinkov's plain black costumes with the white border around the neck and down the chest. Starkly simple, those costumes were the antithesis of typical Russian costumes and added so much to the purity of that program. Such an unusual choice but it worked. They were like a priest and a nun worshiping, right?

Were G&G's costumes black or blue? I thought they were dark navy blue but perhaps I'm remembering incorrectly.
Hmm, I would have to say that Jill Trenary's costumes from the 88 Olys were beautiful. I always like Nicole Bobek's too. Especially her Zorba the Greek costume.

I liked Nancy Kerrigan's 1994 SP black/white costume with the row of covered white buttons down the back, black band trim and sheer black sleeves. A classic by Vera Wang.
I've also liked many of Toller Cranston's designs for Karen Preston, Lucinda Ruh, Chen Lu, etc.
Cheers,

G&G's Moonlight Sonata costumes from the 94 season were navy blue, not black. I agree they were very nice though.

Nancy Kerrigan's Olympic long program gold dress by Very Wang.
Yagudin's red shirt-black pant combo for his racing car short program. I wish more male skaters would go for that more simplistic look.

Josee Chouinard always has beautiful costumes. I think she designs most of them herself. My favourite of hers was the blue one with the flower trim from Lillehammer.
Michelle Kwan always has nice costumes too, my favourite was her dark blue w/ gold trim from the SLC SP.
Who has the best costumes in the men? Maybe Takeshi Honda, Jeff Buttle, or Alexei Yayudin

Gordeeva/Grinkov were wearing midnight blue, I think to symbolize the music, Moonlight Sonata. lol they weren't portraying a priest and a nun worshipping--they were portraying the story of a man who loves a woman, as that woman is the mother of his child, and symbolically, woman is the giver of life. So beautiful and sad in retrospect :) I love those costumes too btw :)
more recently, from this past season, I really loved D/S Baroque OD costumes from earlier in the year, when they were gold and green, Gordeeva's Russian folk song outfit, and S/Z free program costumes--I know they're old, but I still think they're gorgeous :)

I really liked Michelle's Olympic LP dress. That red with gold was really simple, but just stunning especially with her complection. It had more of an impact on me though at the GPF that year b/c it was the first time she had worn it. I loved Sasha's 2001 Trophee Lalique dress http://www.sashafans.com/media/gallery/2001lalique/long/long-kempf-1.jpg http://www.sashafans.com/media/gallery/2001lalique/long/long-kempf-3.jpg her R&J costume from Sears http://www.sashafans.com/media/screencaptures/2002sears/lp8.jpg http://www.sashafans.com/media/screencaptures/2002sears/lp9.jpg
and her costume from a photo shoot http://www.cmmskating.com/photos/sasha7.gif
I actually liked Sarah's costumes this year a whole lot from nats
so those are my favorites for her. http://www.dianesrink.com/sarah/gallery/labayadere/03natslpja2.jpg

Yagudin's Man In The Iron Mask costume was sleek, original, striking, unforgettable. My all time favorite.
Nicole Bobek always had beautiful costumes.
I especially liked her Evita costume in white, with black accents and gold trim, and her blue Dr Shivago costume was stunning.

I always think that the dress Shae-Lynn Bourne wore for she and Victor's Seachran waltz OD in 1999 was just beautiful. It was dyed through pink and purple with a kind of beaded, embroidered bodice thing at the top, it was so gorgeous (I'm so terrible at explaining dresses!)
I also loved Jamie Salé's lemon and white halter dress that she wore for Come Fly last season, it was beautiful.

Kristi Yamaguchi's "Oh So Quiet" daisy halter dress.
I liked Josee's blue dress from '94, I copied it for myself. Matter of fact, there are too many gorgeous Josee dresses to name.
Tonia Kwiatkowski's silver-gray dress in '98, red and gold Hungarian dress in '97, and her glittery blue skirt and sweater combo from '00.
Kwan's Red Violin, Day in the Life and Taj Mahal.
Bobek's Dr. Zhivago.

Yuka Sato's "Summertime" dress was beautiful. Awful music, but loved the dress. Michelle Kwan's 2003 SP dress was incredible.

Did you mean the "bad luck" Taj Mahal dress? I thought she looked stunning in that one...too bad that program never lived up to its full 7 triple potential.

My favorite was Elvis' '94 Short Program costume. I loved the leather look, very different at the time and it was one of the first things that turned my head about the sport actually. That and the fact that he skated to rock'n'roll and skated in jeans and a t-shirt, lol.
I also like Alexei's Man In The Iron Mask costume (simple but nice) and Michelle Kwan's Field of Gold dress.

Tyler Cochrans costme kicks ***!!!~ red leather pants!!~ so i herd..cmon who can beat that!!~ even though there r many other nice costumes out ther 4 sr men...short i like his!!!
It's Tyler Cochrane with an e by the way, he does have red leather pants and they are pretty nice, he also has a really nice shirt that goes with the pants. I'm not too fond of Jeff Buttle's new long program costume but it does go with the music.

Sale/Pelletier's Love Story Outfites Light and Dark Grey. Fit the music great and was different for skating!
Whenever I think of costumes, Michelle's sky-blue costume for Lyra Angelica immediately comes to mind. When she unveiled the new costume at 98 Nationals, I thought she looked almost ethereal set against the blue ice. Lots of costumes have come and gone since, but that one was simply unforgettable.

Nancy Kerrigan's "Beauty and the Beast" outfit from 1993 Worlds. It was a very dark brown (almost black) with form-fitting sheer sleeves and a jeweled "vest" pattern around the upper part of the dress. It complemented her hair beautifully. I've always thought she never looked lovelier, in that camera close-up of her face just before the music started. She also looked scared because her face was so pale ... it was the first time she had gone into any world championship as the favorite, and unfortunately the program was a disaster. But at least she didn't quit and came back the next year better than ever.

Wooo, Minto skate costumes were good! I saw the leather...could it be better! lol, I loved the vest of Jeff buttles short it was soo jazzy! I actually liked his long program costume it was dramatic but look sooo easy to skate too! Although come to think of it I dont think I hate ne thing about Jeff buttle so I guess I'm sorta bias... By the way Jeffs Programs were absolutly AMAZING!!!

I loved both of Michelle Kwan's dresses last year. Her short dress was just stunningly beatiful and sophisticated(beige/gold) and her long although i did not like it at firrst glance was different, an amazing colour(bright turquoisy blue with gold) and matched the program perfectly (spanish but not just your typical spanish, which would have a black and red or gold dress of course..
Sarah Hughes:
1) Fosse~~If you remember it was a black studded pantsuit with black lace studded gloves. It was a very classy outfit for that program.
2) Turandot~~Dark-blue (I think this was studded too) dress.
These were the best, but to be honest, IMHO all of Sarah's costumes were beautiful (except possibly the first DQ and Daphnis and Chloe dresses--They weren't horrible, but I wouldn't have put them on my fave list).
And Michelle Kwan's The World Is Not Enough costume was always a favorite of mine.
And somebody already mentioned Kristi Yamaguchi's "So Quiet" costume--Ditto on that as well!

OMG--Where'd you get that poster?? And is it still available??
BTW, I wish they'd open up a museum for figure skating costumes. Makes you wonder what happens to all these costumes after they're retired.

You have to have a Euro's comment!
So here it is:
It is like compairing the Paris and NYC fashion shows. Ones are trendy, imaginative, and tried to push the limits of arts...the other ones are just commercial and boring.
Just look at what Surya Bonaly and Philippe Candeloro's costumes in the 90's. They were designed by the trendiest designers in the world. Off course, in North America, coach don't encourage their skaters to wear 'distracting' outfits..and that is why Michelle Kwan is wearing those plain boring Vera Wang costumes.. (I am waiting for Kwanatics to scream at me for that, lol!)
Bonaly, Vivaldi 94 just amazing outfit!
Candeloro. (worlds in Canada..his cowboy costume on the comics book Licky Luke...) a master piece..
Look at Stanick Jeannette's costumes today!
This sports should be about pushing the limits: technically, and artistically..not about wearing something too distracting!

Elena and Anton's Olympic "Lady Caliph" costumes. Gorgeous program, and gorgeous costumes.

Kurt's Casablanca tux costume was a classic. So were the Brickhouse pants...(Hey, someone had to say it. :D) I really liked what he had on for How Do You Keep The Music Playing this year too. Simple and stunning. I know some didn't like the shirt, but I thought it was fine.
I also loved Jamie Sale's Come Fly halter dress. That was gorgeous. I also liked Shae-Lynn's halter dress for Hotel California from a few years ago. On both dresses, I loved how the skirts moved. Seachran was also a thing of beauty. Both the program *and* Shae's dress.
I am still a huge fan of Michelle's DOD SP dress. It was a beautiful dress and the colour suited her to a tee. The big thing to me though, was the look of it. She was skating to a piece of music inspired by Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Era. That dress...Be it neckline or sleeves was *very* much Elizabethan in character. To someone who is both a lover of Shakespeare and that entire period of history....I was thrilled to see that brought out to the dress.
Sorry for rambling!!

My all time fave is Rosalyn Sumners white dress from the Sarajevo Olympics. For its time, it was just perfect!
Also, Nancy Kerrigan's from the short program of the '94 Oly's - the green Peggy Fleming copy. Simple but so her.

I love almost anything worn by Katia Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov. Although I hated Katia's Three Prelude's and Paradise costumes. I especially loved the costumes they wore for The Man I Love, The Rolling Stones finale (SOI 1995). I loved the second dress for Katia's Russian folk music (the one she wore for the SOI apperences).
I love anything worn by Alexei Yagudin (expet the One Bananna program8O )

So light and free. This program and costume made me fall in love with the sport again.
Galina maniachenko(?????) I don't know her last name but her SLC SP costume (her music was from "Schindler's List") was simply divine. She truly is a beautiful athlete.
