Intermediate Men’s Short Program
1)Eliot Halverson (St. Paul FSC): 1/2/1/1/2 I can’t remember the piece, except that it was used as the short program music in the movie “The Cutting Edge.” His elements were 2axel/2loop combo, ftwk into 2f, a solo sit spin with 11 rotations that sort of slowed at the end, circular ftwk composed mostly of turns in the same direction, a tano axel, and a combination spin that included the biellmann position in the forward part and a pancake position in the back half. Definitely was a good skate and I kept going back and forth between Eliot and Andrew Speroff as to who should be 1st.
2)Andrew Speroff (Broadmoor FSC): 2/1/2/3/1 His elements were 2axel/2toe, a camel spin with very nice balance on the “sweet” spot of the blade and 9 rotations, ftwk into a 2f, serpentine footwork, single axel, and a combo spin composed of a camel, semi-sit, back camel, back sit.
3)Paul Tran (Columbia FSC): 3/4/4/2/3 Elements were 2a/2t, sit spin with 9 rotations and hand variations, 1a, basic ftwk into a 2flip, diag ftwk, and a combo spin with camel, sit, back sit, and back scratch.
4)Grant Hochstein (St. Clair Shores FSC): 5/7/3/4/4 Opened with a single axel, followed with 2a/2t, diag ftwk, basic ftwk into 2f, and combo spin camel, sit, back sit, back sit with hand variation.
5)Eric Newbold (Utah FSC): 4/5/6/6/7 Single axel, 2a(tight/under-rotated)/2t, layback with 10 rotations in a position similar to Kwan’s low leg layback and decent centering, 2f, and a combination spin that I thought was executed well; camel/sit/back sit/back scratch. Somewhere in there I’m sure he had a step sequence, but I missed it.
6)Victor Travis (Pavilion FSC): 6/6/5/9/9 Single axel, 2axel in which he fell and did not attempt a second jump after, back camel solo spin (5 rotations), 2flip with little if any footwork, straightline steps, and a combo spin of camel, sit, pancake, back sit, and back cross foot (the cross foot being off balance). He also included some spirals in the performance was well, near the end of his step sequence. Nice to see.
7)Mike Huber (Skating Academy of Plymouth): 8/3/7/8/5 Single axel, combo spin with camel, sit, and back sit, had to put his hand down on the landing of his 2axel in his 2a/2t combo, ftwk into 2f, circ ftwk, and a sit spin with 9 rotations.
8)Reed Minney (St. Clair Shores FSC): 7/8/8/5/8 Opened with a camel spin with 7 rotations, next up was the 2a/2t combo in which he sort of flipped out of the landing on the 2toe, but was able to remain on one foot, ftwk into 2f, combo camel/sit/back sit, diag ftwk with turns mostly in one direction, 1axel.
9)Daniel Palmeri (Port Huron FSC): 9/9/9/7/6 Double lutz/double toe, sit with hand variation and 10 rotations, LFI/LBO spirals with a turn and stroke into a 1axel, had nice flow on his straightline ftwk, turns into a 2flip, average combo spin with camel/sit/back sit/back scratch.
10)Nathan Raymond (St. Louis FSC): 10/11/12/11/10 Double lutz/double toe finished with a stand still on the 2toe, heel glide into sit spin (7 rotations), serpentine ftwk, spread eagle into 1a, fall on his 2flip, combo spin with camel/sit/back sit. He skated to Man In The Iron Mask.
Novice Men’s Short Group A
1)Charlie White (Detroit Skating Club): 1/1/3/4/1 Started off with a 2axel and then went for the 3lutz/2toe which he was nearly able to complete except for a turn out on the landing of the 2toe, flying camel with 7 rotations, ftwk into a single flip (awwww), nice diag ftwk with great turns at the end using different levels and shapes of the body, and a combo spin with a camel/sit/semi-sit/back camel (w/ re-centering)/back sit/back scratch. I had him first despite the minor error on the combo with the step out and the single flip as opposed to a double because of the greater degree of difficulty with his combination jump and also the quality of his footwork sequence.
2)Osadolo Irowa (DuPage FSC): 3/2/2/2/3 He too opened with a 2axel and then went for a 3toe/2toe combination in which he did a double three between the two jumps, combo spin with camel/sit/back sit/back scratch, diag ftwk, ftwk into a 2flip, and flying camel (9).
3)Jonathan Cassar (Detroit Skating Club): 6/3/1/1/6 Skated to a techno Romeo & Juliet. Opened with a 2axel, followed by a spread eagle with a turn into his supposed combination but he fell on the 3loop and didn’t attempt the 2nd jump, diag ftwk, combo spin with camel/sit/Sandhu/back sit/back variation., ftwk into a 2flip, and I believe a flying sit (6 rotations). Judges didn’t seem to know where to place him … I had him 4th.
4)Brandon Boxberger (Mariposa Winter Club): 2/4/4/3/2 Opened with a 3lutz/2toe combo and then fell on his 2axel. Flying camel got a deduction for not enough fly but he did have 9 rotations on it, ftwk into 2flip, diag ftwk (a little scratchy sounding). At this point his music skipped and we waited several minutes to get things back in order for him to continue. Immediately after starting his program again he slipped and fell, but I don’t think it was on a required element. He finished off with a combo spin camel/sit/upright variation/back camel/back sit/back scratch. I had him 2nd (same top 3 placements as judge #5, Lorrie Parker, had).
5)Colin Loomis (Ann Arbor FSC): 5/6/5/5/5 Opened with a 2axel, 3salchow with a fall and he got up and did a 1toe, combo spin with camel/sit/bck sit (8 front and 6 back), serpentine ftwk, ftwk into 2flip, and flying camel with 6 rotations.
6)Eric Reinhart (Broadmoor FSC): 4/5/6/6/4 Triple salchow/double toe that was 2footed on the first jump, 2axel that was under-rotated, death drop into a back sit in which the position in the air may not have been good enough to avoid a deduction (9 rotations), ftwk into 2flipp, circ ftwk, camel/sit/sit variation/back sit/back Y (spin tended to slow to a stop).
Novice Men’s Short Group B
1)William Brewster (Detroit Skating Club): 1/1/1/1/1 Unanimous from the judges that he was tops in this group. It was an Italian Themed Program, fairly well known, but I’m drawing a blank on its name. He did have an error though, he fell on his combination jump (the 3toe) and didn’t include a second jump after the fall. Completed the 2axel, death drop into back sit (9), ftwk into 2flip. The music skipped on him at this point and he had to have the music stopped and replayed so that he could pick up from where he left off. From that point he had nice circular ftwk with quick turns, and a combo spin camelsit/sit-variation/back sit/back scratch.
2)Jon Nuss (Broadmoor FSC): 2/2/2/2/2 Triple toe with a turn out and no second jump for the combo, I believe he performed a death drop (had 8 or 9 rotations), straightline ftwk had a slightly off balanced moment a bit into it, 2axel, ftwk into 2flip with hands over head, and combo spin camel/sit/sit variation/back sit/back pancake.
3)Frank Huber (Skating Academy of Pymouth): 4/3/4/3/3 Skated to “Bond.” Triple salchow with a hand down into a 2toe, flying camel with about 6 rotations and needed improvement on the jump part, serp ftwk, 2flip with a lengthy pause from the steps to the actual jump, 2axel (hand down), camel/back camel/back sit. I wasn’t sure if the front had the full required number of 5 revs. I liked his energy and attack in this program.
4)Rockne Brubaker (FSC of Rockford): 3/4/3/5/4 Triple salchow with a fall and then a turn into a 2toe, death drop into back sit with 6 rotations, but did not land in position, 2axel with a skidded landing, circ ftwk in which he seemed a bit off balance at first, ftwk into a 2flip, and a combo spin with a camel/sit/back camel/back sit. His music was a sax type of Rock N’ Role.
5)Travor Young (Detroit Skating Club): 6/5/6/6/5 Violin version of “Yesterday.” Double axel with a fall, 3toe with a fall, flying camel with 6 revs, ftwk into 2flip, circ ftwk, lunge with a turn to a camel/upright variation/back sit combination spin.
6)Daniel Schmitz (Detroit Skating Club): 5/6/5/7/6 flying sit(7), 3s (X), ftwk into 2flip, 2axel (flip out), circ ftwk, combo spin might have been a rotation short on the front.
