I finally got around to buying Ellen's book...I haven't finished it, its not a quick read, and I'm not saying I totally agree with everything I've read so far, but I just wanted to HIGHLY recommend this book...it is very well written, engaging, is a serious effort to understand and explain many things!

Its also just plain FUN to read, very satisfying because questions raised are answered, and include various perspectives.

Now, having said that, I hope some newspaper or media outfit hires Ellyn to write on figure skating?

I totally agree. It's full of interesting perspectives and I'm grateful for the scholarly, in depth analysis of some of these issues. I understand better now the role that school figures used to play and how the history of the sport has lead to the ideals that are set for it today. I'm hoping that as I keep reading, it will explain to me why I love figure skating so much, on a level that is just below my consciousness. It's something I've wondered about.

There are things that I disagree about too, but it's a super interesting, well informed and well constructed thesis. Nice work, Ellyn!
