Mia is a very talented girl who I have seen several times on competitions in Denmark. Very little and has good jumps. Simular stile to Mikkeline Kierkgaard (and the same coaches to!).
Ice in the foots.
Children with much talent are not easy to stop and take much time and money for the rest of the family. The parents and siblings to Mia Brix knows that. They are very proud of her and think that it is fun, good, expensive and hard with a talented child in the family.
Mia Brix has always been very fast and sure. She walked when she was nine month old and was going down the skislope when she was three - after three days of practise.
She started to go to gymnastics when she was five and was taken to the competitionsgroup with children up to 15 years old one year after. When she decided to stop when she was seven, her coaches cried. But Danish figureskationg got a new star.
Today Mia is 13 years old. She has for almost three years been in the Danish skating federations talentgroup called "Team Danskate" and for almost two years in the ISU development project for nordic and brittish skaters. In both groups she is one of the youngest.
-Mia is one of the real good both technical and artistic. She can already do double axel and trippel salchow - there isn´t so many who does that in her age. And she has a good mind for competitions, Julia Sandsten her coach said.
-She is a bright talent- it is fun, good, expensive and hard, Mias parents says. They and the other kids in the family (Julie 14, Anton 6, Linnea 3) lives a life who very much are dominating of Mias skating.
In the season from august to april Mia practise atleast 15 hours every week. 10-12 hours on the ice and five hours of balett and off ice training. Two times every week they have to drive her to the skating rink at 5.45 in the morning and she is almost never home before 19.00.
The summer to is a buzzy time for the skaters. The whole month of may they had to drive her from North själland to rödövre ice hall every day. They could do it because Mias mum is a freelance arkitekt and can work when she has time. In the spring and the summer Mia has been to an international competition in Croatia, ISU development project in Finland and a two weeks camp in Sweden. This week she again is in Sweden to practise for one week. (They don´t have any camps in Denmark this year.)
It is a hard program also for the rest of the family. Mia´s dad has been coach for a gymnastic team for 12 years, so he early saw that Mia had real talent. So when she was five and went to gymnastic they saw her imediately, and when she was six she practised for 10 hours aweek.
-We thought that it was much practise for her age. We were not sad when she decided to stop. I know how hard gymnastics is, her dad says.
It was Mia self who decided to stop. Not because she was tired of gymnastic, practise and competitons, but she had already taken a few classes at the skatingschool and knew that she would like skating better. After two month of training she was taken to a group with the best children for her age. And then she skated for three to four times aweek and a whole knew world opened for her with music, speed, fine dresses and glamour. After one year she began to compete and as a nine year old she was a championships skater.
- We thougt that it again went very fast. But we have never been concerned over the skating practise because it isn´t so pshysical hard as the gymnastic practise. But it take more mental preparation for her , she is alone on the ice and has to show what she can do in a few minutes. But it has never been a problem for her, her mum says.
To deal with having a talented child in the house her parents have been to a seminars there sport phycoligist has been teaching parents to talented children.
- That have been to very good help. I feel very happy when I see that she develops on competition and practise - she is so nice on the ice. But I am very nervous when she is going on the ice on competitions and we can´t show her that. We can´t shout at her if she is doing badly, se have to focus on the good things. It is important to know how you are going to understand and push her in a good way and not critizising, for talented kids is a bit selfish. They are expecting much of theirself and other and are not pleased for everything. You can´t have the focus on them all the time. It is the children who should take step forwards by themself , not the ambitions of the parents. , her mum says.
To get focus on the other children they have taken care of Julies interest for horses. She has got her own horse. As a five year old Mia to wanted to ride and she became good at it in no time. -But we decided to part the children , took Mia aside and told her that the horses Julie was going to have for herself. , her mum said.
The two youngest children are already sport oriented. Anton do soccer and badminton and Linnea who goes to gymnastics has said that she want to be a handballplayer. The parents sailed in a boat and owned a boat before but have no time and money to it anymore. It takes much money to have a talented child. Mias figureskating cost about $4500 every year . Julies horse cost $3000 every year.
- We spend all our money on our children. There is some of our friends who don´t understand that. If we had a talented boy who played soccer it wasn´t going to be so expensive, but Mia can´t help that figureskating is an expencive sport. Even she is so talented the economic help is little. Team Denmark don´t give money to children under 15 years old . And not in sports that you are practise as childs, her dad says.
Teasing in scholl is an other price that Mia personally had to pay. One year ago she had to change school.
- The first years went fine. Mia was very good in school and that together with her skating was to much for her friends - she was to different. The other kids in her class was after her so she didn´t want to go to school any more.
Now she goes to a school in Hörsholm. It takes more driving and planning, but it was necessary. She had to have a school their her mates accepted her. And today there is no problems that Mia takes much of her time to figureskating. There is several things that she is missing. She could never go to activityhouses and stuffs and next time she will miss her scholltrip, because she is going to Finland for ISU development projekt again, her mum says.
Mia is 13 years old this year and can skate as a junior now. So already this year she will skate against the best Danish and international skaters who is up to 19 years old. And she will again be the youngest on the ice. Her ambitions are clear. She will go to the international top.
- We will help her, but we think that to much is on the parents. In Denmark we don´t have so much ice and the standard on the practise isn´t so good as in many other counries, so it will be difficult to break trough as a talent. But we will try our best. Because of the bad conditions there is much lost talent and it is not good for the families when to much is up to them. It can be an extra press on her to do good for the family, her dad says.
