Avascular necrosis (AVN) the damaging hip condition that Rudy was diagnosed with in summer, 2002, has necessitated surgical repair to restore function and eliminate increasingly severe pain. He will have total replacement of both hips. The first surgery is scheduled for August 19 in Reno; the second will be approximately six weeks later.
He will have the recently FDA cleared ceramic-on-ceramic hip implants that are now being used for younger, active people requiring the procedure.
Rudy plans to take the better part of a year off for surgery and to recover and rehabilitate. His goal is to skate and perform again. According to his surgeon, he will be able to do this; according to Rudy, he will do it.
Some good news about Rudy's health came at the right time prior to surgery in his latest HIV-related blood work--C4 cell count over 600 and viral load undetectable.
There is more information--and will be as it becomes available--on Rudy's web site: http://www.rudy-galindo.com/news.htm

I wish Rudy all the best! He's had this hip problem or quite awhile now, hasn't he? It's good that it's getting taken care of, even if that means being off the ice for a time.

Wow, Rudy's hip problem sounds serious. I'm amazed he was able to skate at all last spring if both his hips need to be replaced! Here's hoping the surgery goes well and he'll be able to make a full recovery (and perhaps provide inspiration to all the other skaters battling hip problems right now!)
OTOH, it's great to know his HIV seems to be under control--let's hope it stays that way! :)

This is interesting -- I was just thinking about Rudy yesterday and wondering how he was doing... (am I psychic?)

That's wonderful news about Rudy's bloodwork results:D
His surgery sounds serious, but I'm glad that he's doing it and that he will not rush back on to the ice. I look forward to seeing him skate again once he is completely recovered.

Amanda, thank you for the updates on Rudy I really appreciate it. I've always admired him both as a skater and a courageous person. I had the pleasure of meeting him last year at Elvis's tour. He was so nice and funny too. He's got a great personality!:)

Hmmm... Interesting, isn't it? I was just thinking about his skating -- saw him at COI and thought his program was cute and very "Rudy" but the actual skating just wasn't there. I was worried about his HIV, but it makes sense that it is a more physical problem, because he looked good otherwise!!
I wish him all the best.

Best wishes to Rudy for a speedy recovery!
Is there an address where we could send him letters, cards, etc?

There will soon be a Reno address for cards and letters to Rudy. I'll post it here and on his web site as soon as I know have it. He's worried about being out of action for so long and will welcome hearing from skating fans.
