View Full Version : A new avenue for skating?

I recently came across a want ad where I saw a novel idea.
"I am looking for a home base rink in which I can
be the Skating School Director in addition to
having a home base for a new team sport I have
created, Cheer Dance Skating through my
organization, National Skating Cheerleading
Association. Cheer Dance Skating is a combination
of figure skating, hockey skating, cheerleading, 8
styles of contemporary dance, and pom."
Wow! Sounds complicated! I wish I could see what this is like in person. Does anyone know about it? Any thoughts?

I don't have any info on this specifically, but it is an idea which is certainly being put into action here in Portland.
There is a group of teenagers who call themselves the "Hawkettes" who perform a couple times a year at intermission at hockey games (our local team, the Winter Hawks). The group is organized by the skaters, they do all their own choreography, arrange for ice-time, etc. -- it's not synchro, it's not "Ice Theater" -- I have not seen them perform but I understand that they are really fun to watch and totally popular with the hockey crowd!
Where did you see this ad? I should probably pass it along tothe organizer of that group!:D

I know that St. Cloud has hockey cheerleaders (who are in skates for at least part of the game) for their college hockey team, per a report from one of my nephews. I looked for a webpage for them, but couldn't find one. But I did find this funny quote:
"Michigan fans ... they're horrible people," St. Cloud cheerleader Molly McGannon told the St. Cloud Times. "It's like they've never seen hockey cheerleaders. Their band was obnoxious."
The New York Islanders have "Ice Girls" in figure skates and little clothes scraping the excess ice during NHL games. Does anyone recognize any of these skaters as competitors? http://www.newyorkislanders.com/icegirls/icegirls.asp
I don't think I really answered the question, did I?

A lot of high schools have hockey teams. I can imagine ice cheer could become a popular school sport for kids w/ a freestyle background.

Where do the New York Islanders ice girls cheer? They must be off the ice most of the time....and then possibly do a few cheers on the ice between periods? This would be the same for any hockey cheer group? I can't imagine them being on the ice during play with the checking into boards etc.

I don't think that they do much cheering. During stopages of play, the NHL mandates that the home team scrape the snow from the front of the goals and the benches. The Ice Girls throw t-shirts and goodies into the stands between periods, too.
They are not on the ice during play. That would be very unsafe.

'a combination of figure skating and hockey skating...'
What, are they going to check each other into the boards while doing a lutz? ;)
20+ years ago, my High School hockey team had the cheerleaders on the ice between periods. They did a group program (low level synchro-esque) a few cheers on the ice, then got back in the stands for the rest of the game.
Dance Cheer whatever sounds like a cross between synchro/ice dance/cheerleading - or a higher level of what my HS did years ago.

I honestly don't think I could improve on the ad you quoted.

hmmmm!
i'm not a great fan of syncro.
i'm not a great fan of cheerleaders.
but, the idea of a synchronized cheerleading team in hocky skates sounds nuts enough to be "camp" or "fun" or "too wierd for words" or, like, "why not?"
icedancesk8er, why would anything that sounds like fun and sounds similar to syncro make you feel "sick?"
wierd, yes, puke-ifying? no.
geez, give the skaters a break, eh?

Yeah, of course. As I always say....if it makes one feel good, then why not go for it!

this really is a wierd idea, but in the grand arena of entertainment, how strange is it really?
i once heard jimmy disbrow comment, in jest of course, that what ice dance needed was a "good" scandal ( to boost its popularity).
i guess i'm just nuts enough myself to enjoy this hybrid idea of sports entertainment/quality showmanship skating.
i hope the idea picks up with the fans (within respectible limits, of course!)

man, that would be the weirdest thing ever.. I wonder if the opposing teams cheerleaders would be as violent as to each other as their Male and sometimes female hockey playing counterparts

the image of a double flip slamming a straight-line footwork sequence into the boards......
but not all that far removed from some of the competition practices i've seen!

Why? You gotta be kidding, right? This sounds like the sort of thing that makes figure skating seem stupid to the critics of the sport. Keep figure skating out of it and I'll buy into it. wmw...I'm entitled to my opinion the same as you are...I believe that's why they call it a forum.
