LOL, I think technically Sonia had the boy. I wonder if I'll be seeing her in the National Ballet's upcoming season?
Congrats to Kurt and Sonia! I can totally see Kurt being a great Dad.

FUnny.....
Isabelle Brasseur and Kurt always talk about how many similarities they have had in life and the timing of their similarities......
Isabelle has a girl named Gabriella and now Kurt has a boy named Gabriel....
Hmmmm....

md2be, I had exactly the same thought when I heard the baby's name--I wonder if Kurt and Sonia would have also named this baby Gabriella or Gabrielle had it turned out to be a girl?
Another interesting coincidence: baby Gabriel was born on Kristi Yamaguchi's birthday! I bet this is probably the most amazing birthday gift she's ever received. :)
Congratulations to Kurt, Sonia and their new baby boy! :D

Congratulations to Kurt and Sonia on this latest blessing to their lives.
Gabriel's starting to get popular again. We've got three baby boys in our area who have been named Gabriel over the last year.
Such wonderful news to see first time online today!!! :)

The announcement is up at www.starsonice.com
Gabriel weighed in at 8 1/2 pounds. Big baby for such a tiny person like Sonia. Kurt's quoted as saying Gabriel's got lots of black hair.
You know....I could say something about that, but I'll pass for once. ;) :D
Everyone's doing great and "Dad is amazingly calm.".
Congratulations to Kurt and Sonia again!!! :D

Thanks for letting us know about the birth announcement, Tigger!
I don't know why it's not mentioned in the birth announcement, but the baby was born in Spain. I'm not sure whether that was their intention all along or if Kurt and Sonia changed their plans because of the SARS scare in Toronto (a lot of expectant mothers in the city have had to find new doctors, etc. at the last minute), but either way, I'm pretty sure little Gabriel has duel Canadian-Spanish citizenship, which is pretty cool! :)
From the description, it sounds like the baby takes after Sonia; if you look at Kurt's own baby pictures in "Forcing The Edge," he actually had blond hair for the first couple of years of his life. :D
Interesting to note Gabriel's last name is "Browning Rodriguez"; in most cases I know where the baby takes both parents' last names, the mother's name is placed before the father's, but regardless of what his name is, I'm sure Kurt and Sonia are enjoying their new bundle of joy. :)
BTW, there's now a "congratulations" thread at the Biography Channel Kurt board if you'd like to post a message directly to him and Sonia:
http://www.thebiographychannel.ca/cgi-bin/forum/cutecast.pl?session=3DSGgBmJbFxXgaFQdoXamraJ8C&forum=1&thread=50
That board is probably the closest "official" presence Kurt has on the Internet right now (the site says he visits the board from time to time), so if you'd like to post a message someplace where he may actually read it, that's probably the best place to do it. :)

According to another Kurt site out there, it was their intention all along. In fact, the link to that info was posted to the Kurt List Kirsten. I guess you must have missed it.
I don't know why the name is the way it is, but it doesn't matter. All that matters is the baby's here and okay, Sonia's okay and Kurt must be over the moon right now. :D

I know the site you're referring to, Tigger, but I did miss the part about Sonia and Kurt planning to have the baby in Spain all along. But either way, I'm glad Kurt and his new family didn't have to worry about SARS!
BTW, a Spanish poster at FSU did a good job at explaining about the name thing: Spanish people always use both their parents' surnames and usually (as in baby Gabriel's case), the father's name is listed before the mother's (in North America, it's usually the other way around). I hope that clears things up a bit for anyone else who might have been confused!

Actually.. that's wrong.. In North America you ALWAYS have your father's name.. In Spain (and other Latin Countries) you ADD your mother's last name just after. It's not reversed.
So Kurt Browning would be Kurt Browning (whatever his mother's maiden name is).
I'm sure their baby is now Gabriel Browning Rodriguez ;)

Thanks for correcting that Arsenette. It facinates me how different countries/cultures do the name thing. Always a good thing when you learn something new during the day. :)

Oh no problem.. See.. I grew up here in the US and even my SISTERS got that wrong. I moved to Puerto Rico during my parents divorce to live with my Aunt and when I got mail, my sisters ALWAYS screwed up and added my mom's name FIRST!!! Considering that my parents were in a divorce, my Aunt (being my father's sister) had a royal hissy fit that my last name was "disowned by my mother's family" Needless to say - my sister (at least the older one) gets it right now. My middle sister still screws it up to the point when she married she wanted to acquire her husband's last name THEN her own to the point where she would have been technically considered his daughter!!!! She got corrected in the license office.. she just abandoned her last name entirely and took his (I did that). In Latin Countries (for the most part) you don't even take your husband's name.. that's why you get people with friggin long names.. and if they have middle names AND use their Catholic Confirmation name you get a person with 5 names!!! You'd swear you are a Royal! So to end.. My name would be Arsenette Gómez Lebrón de Reiter instead of just plain or Arsenette Reiter like I am here in the US. I still get calls for Gómez because they refuse to use my married name
Back on subject.. I'm tickled pink that they are parents.. They make such a cute couple! I mean I wonder what talent Gabriel is going to have with parents like his ;)

So *that* explains some of the really long names I see w/the Mom's of the Latin Major League Baseball players. Thanks Arsenette and you *were* on topic. Since the name thing was a confusing thing....Thanks again for all of that.
Although....Shouldn't we be tickled blue Kurt and Sonia are parents? Yeah...I know....Pretty bad. Blame the hour....LOL!!! :D

Well, you really didn't screw up. I was being a smart aleck and trying to be funny. Too late and too much caffeine....A deadly combination...LOL!!!
Although Sonia was born in Toronto, she was raised in Madrid, Spain; undoubtedly, she still has relatives there.

I live in the UK, and my cousin (also in the UK) has SIX names - and isn't married and doesn't yet have a confirmation name! (She's only 11). She has her first name, then three middle names (2 of them after her 2 grandmothers), her mother's surname and then her dad's surname (they weren't married). And she's not royal either. :) She's just got a very long name... lol

Yay Kurt and Sonia! I'm so glad! (Even though the name thing seems horribly complicated! :-) )
