Too bad they didn't post the groups as well. I wonder if they will still do all the CDs now that USFSA has published the dances for the rest of the season?

These results and brief comments (by "Impromptu") were phoned in from Lake Placid... the official site says the rest of the official results from Thursday will go up on Friday morning.

SENIOR FREE DANCE

1. Gibbons & Pekarek (ordinals were 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 2)
Music was Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet + techno. "Much improvement, kept moving, many level changes, really nice dance spin."

2. Nussear & Forsyth (2 2 3 4 3 3 1 1 1)
Music was Cirque du Soleil-Quidam. "Slip (by her?) in the diagonal steps might have cost them, cool spinning dance lift that elicited gasp from audience."

3. Manon & O'Meara (3 3 2 2 1 1 3 2 3)
"Really sold their 'Cabaret' program, best expression and character to the music, very quirky."

4. Goodwin & Bommentre
Tango. They skated first. "She's very expressive."

5. Magerovskiy & Magerovskiy
James Bond - The World is Not Enough. "Tons of twizzles."

6. Buck & Nelson-Bond AUS
Techno. "Nice spirals and stretches, looked good."

7. Menard & Boucher CAN
French tango. "Lifts looked good, shoulder height."

8. Rey & Rey
Carmina Burana. "Lots of arm jerking movements, mostly by her."

9. Munana & Munana
"Cool lifts, she was in a low glide for one."

10. Morin & Roberge CAN
11. May & Latyshev
Music was mostly "Summer in Buenos Aires" from Gidon Kremer's 8 Seasons.
12. Snyder & Traxler

JUNIOR FREE DANCE GROUP A
1. Davis & White - 7 1sts, 2 2nds
Music was Cirque du Soleil's Allegria. "Sharp, quick, well-choreographed, looked good."

2. Hurst & Stoveld CAN
Music was Etta James' At Last. "Soft knees, nice deep edges, smooth."

3. Solomon & Smith
Music was Sting. "Very nice program by Klimova & Ponomarenko, flowed well, intricate holds."

4. Whetstone & Cohen
Music was Miami Sound Machine.

5. Copley & Wensel
Music was tango/flamenco and they "had the Latin attitude down."

6. Scott & Clark
Music was Tatu (Russian band). "Tried some difficult stuff."

7. Savania & DuPont
Carmina Burana - "best costumes - brrown and butter colored," according to Impromptu. Had some falls.

8. LaRoque & Mercier CAN
Violin rock piece.

9. Brown & Harris
Music was opera techno. "Match well, looked much better in practice."

10. Reyes & Wright
Music was a jazz guitarist's rendition of Piazzola, but "couldn't keep up with the music."

JUNIOR FREE DANCE GROUP B
1. Devins & O'Keefe - "a clear victory"
Music was a medley of tunes by the Irish band Leahy. "Powerful, commanding and fast, with some Irish step dancing in face to face holds."

2. Todaro & Evans
Music was Indian. "Very creative choreography with creation of interesting, angular shapes, and foot and hand movements in step sequence."

3. Frisch & Hill - ordinals from 1st to 7th
"She's very tall - maybe only one inch shorter? Twizzles weren't in synch in practice or competition."

4. Pratt & Gilles - ordinals from 1st to 8th
"Difficult edgy stuff, look strong for first year in junior." Impromptu loved them even though she thought the "music doesn't really build" and had them 2nd or 3rd.

5. McCullough & Dear
Music was West Side Story. "Lots of energy and expression, nicely matched, could have been higher if not for his fall."

6. Hetu & Lavallee CAN
Music was Libertango by Bond. "Pretty fast, lots of lifts."

7. D'Agostini & McDonough
Music was a Sting medley. "Smooth, fast, glidey, nicely matched, but a lot of hand to hand holds."

8. Chong & Barnes CAN
"Circular footwork was slow but deep edges. Music too slow, especially compared to last year's folk medley which showed off their quick feet."

9. Scheumann & Koleto
Looked smooth, fast, well-matched in practice, but stiff and slow in competition (nerves?). Good potential."

10. Prossack & McCrary
"Crossover heavy program."

11. Sanders & Brown
"Many lifts were mostly from waist."

12. Chrein & Gordon
"Interesting holds in circular step."

Looks like it was close, but I have heard SUCH good things coming out of SCOB lately that I'm not surprised. I'm happy for Justin to be doing so well after standing by Hilary against the wishes of her detractors.

Thank you Sylvia and Impromptu for these results and reports.

BTW, who exactly were there really "detractors" of Hilary Gibbons? Do you mean on these boards or in person, or both?

Is it my imagination, or were there supposed to be Canadian teams (S/Z and/or P/D) in the Senior FD?

Sorry, I probably didn't phrase that right. I meant some of the coaches and judges who said she wasn't good enough for him last year, including their former coach. I love Justin and Hilary and wish them all the best.

It would be understandable, given what Justin Pekarek has previously accomplished, that there would be those who would only be satisfied if he got together with an established, skilled skater. Give credit to him (and of course his partner, and the coaches for supporting them) for doing what gives him satisfaction - with some success, now, apparently. I get the feeling that he needed to find a partnerng situation that would be personally fulfilling to him, more than anything else, and it seems he has. Good luck to them. (But good luck to Goodwin&Bommentre too, since they skate at my rink, and I think they look wonderful).

Friday's Compulsory Dance and OD results are now up at:
http://www.orda.org/skating/IceDncFri.htm

The following CD impressions and OD results and comments were phoned in by "Impromptu."

Senior CDs: 1st dance was Yankee Polka, second was Ravensburger Waltz.
Manon & O'Meara were "expressive, musical, energetic and charismatic."
Goodwin & Bommentre had "a ton of little mistakes in YP, but came back and nailed the Waltz."
Nussear & Forsyth had "good connection and were solid, but missed hand catch/break in front of judges in Waltz. YP was strong, most technically solid all the way through."
Gibbons & Pekarek "had a trip in the YP, stumble/scrape in RW."

Junior CDs: 1st was Rhumba, 2nd was Viennese Waltz.
Davis & White have "gorgeous soft knees and edgework, but not as much power."
Frisch & Hill "have a lot of power, speed, big patterns, deep edges and lean especially in the Rhumba."
Pratt & Gilles "need time, but 3rd here is a good result for them."
McCullough & Dear and Cepican & Lichtor "were very close, both very musical."

OD rhythms this season are Jive/Blues/Boogie Woogie/Swing.

SENIOR ORIGINAL DANCE
1. Nussear & Forsyth
(ordinals 1 1 1 2 1 1 3 2 1)
Music included When You're Smiling, Sooner or Later. "Have really good connection with each other, a lot of difficulty in the program, twizzles in both directions with very good unison but not much speed, fast in diagonal step sequence with difficult holds, good change in direction lift with him going into a Besti squat."

2. Manon & O'Meara
(ordinals 2 2 2 1 3 2 1 1 3)
Music included Ain't No Sunshine (blues), Sing Sing Sing
"An incredible amount of energy, looked great, really fast in diagonal and midline steps with hops and turns on heels and toes, program got faster and faster, dance spin had 6 revs with her in a layover position."

3. Goodwin & Bommentre
(ordinals 3 3 4 3 2 3 2 4 2)
Music included Stormy Monday
"Really sold it with expression (especailly her) and energy, one of best and strongest dance spins."

4. Gibbons & Pekarek
(ordinals 4 6 3 4 4 4 4 3 4)
Music was a Chuck Berry medley (Jive)
"Beginning is great, cute and they sold it well, she looked really good in the lifts (especially rotational one), a great OD, she fell in midline step sequence and they missed about half of it."

5. Rey & Rey
Music was Hearthbrek Hotel in middle
"Frantic! Lot of arm waving, hopping, running around."

6. Magerovskiy & Magerovskiy
Music was Jumpin' Jack with Blues in middle
"Fast, twizzle-heavy program, she looks like Galit Chait's little sister."

7. McCullough & Dear
Music included Heat Wave
"Smooth and waltzy, charming with a lot of musicality, good result for them" (novice last year)

8. Munana & Munana
Brian Setzer medley
"Incredible highlight moves (great lifts, nice dance spin) but lacked speed and in betweens."

9. May & Latyshev
Harlem Nocturne (blues) and ?
"Held free legs behind them at hip level during twizzles in midline step sequence."

10. Menard & Boucher
11. Snyder & Traxler - music included Jump Jive and Wail

JUNIOR ORIGINAL DANCE
1. Frisch & Hill
(ordinals 1 1 2 1 1 3 4 1 2)
Bluesy and Jive program. "Lot of power, leaning edges, still off on twizzles, he's very expressive and sold it." Impromptu didn't like their hoppy, toepicky step sequence.

2. Todaro & Evans
(ordinals 2 2 1 3 2 2 1 3 3)
Jump Jive & Wail/Fever/Dirty Boogie
"Lot of fun and energy, fun lift, nice spin, waltzy diagonal step seq., Besti squats in another step seq., really enjoyed them."

3. Pratt & Gilles
(ordinals 5 3 3 5 7 11 3 2 1)
Music included Jumpin' Jack. "Great program (best of jrs.), edgy and packed, choreographed by Christopher Dean, but looked really difficult and they didn't seem comfortable with it yet."

4. Cepican & Lichtor
(ordinals 3 4 4 2 9 7 2 6 5 TOM 15)
Heartbreak Hotel and At the Top
"Nice rotational lift, she's in a layback position during the dance spin (5 revs), twizzles in both directions, trip by her near end."

5. Hurst & Stoveld
(ordinals 4 10 9 6 3 1 4 4 7 TOM 16)
60 Minute Man and Nutrocker
"Lot of energy, nice soft knees, mirror midline step sequence."

6. Whetstone & Cohen
Music included Big Girls Don't Cry
"Unison was good but seemed a little slow, program looked simple."

7. Solomon & Smith
Music? "Slow but program looked complex." For that reason, Impromptu would have put S&S ahead of W&C.

8. D'Agostini & McDonough
9. Copely & Wensel
10. Scott & Clark
11. Chong & Barnes
12. Prossack & McCrary

2. Manon & O'Meara
(ordinals 2 2 2 1 3 2 1 1 3)
Lot's of speed.

3. Goodwin & Bommentre
(ordinals 3 3 4 3 2 3 2 4 2)
She had a great elegance about her.

I was so excited to be there!

Good to hear this is still the case with them, as IMO it was one of their major strengths when they previously skated together, and something that was sorely lacking in the partnerships they've had in between (particulary for Nussear & Gates). It's hard to imagine how they look after three years apart, so I look forward to seeing them skate this season.

We'll have to wait for the final two CD results, but I'll be curious to see which teams get internationals from this event. We don't have too many spots to hand out, but I'd guess Nussear & Forsyth, Manon & O'Meara, Gibbons & Pekarek, and Goodwin & Bommentre are all pretty well-positioned at this point. I wonder how many spots the USFSA will manage to come up with for these teams, and which couples will get them.

I just got home this afternoon and I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. Senior Dance was encouraging- Justin and Hilary have improved tons, and all I can say about Emilie and Brandon is better late than never. They've still got it. I'll be very surprised if they don't get an international. I really though Goodwin/Bommentre, Manon/O'Meara, and the Magerovskys all looked good too. I don't have any real imporessions of the compulsories, since I only saw the initial round and I don't know the Ravensburger or the Yankee Polka, but I thought Emilie and Brandon clearly won the YP. I didn't see the missed catch on the RW, but that would explain why they were 3rd in that dance.

I didn't take notes from Junior, but I thought Frisch and Hill looked good and definitely deserved to win the OD. I thought the top five junior teams all looked really good in the OD. I didn't see the Junior FD, and I only saw one group of Junior compulsories. I won't bore you with my technical impressions of those ;)

why did mccullough & dear compete in the Senior OD rather than the Junior OD (their competition level)? I found that rather odd that they competed in junior...even though they did place well in senior.

if you were to put the two junior freedance groups together...who would come out on top? how do you think the rest of the teams would fair? (just a little pre-national prediction) please share your thoughts!
