View Full Version : Skating Costume Bonfire

Tigger

Yes, folks...It's that time of the year again!! If you could go into the costume closet of any skater and get the worst costumes of the lot to thrown into a virtual bonfire, who's costume would it be!?! We haven't done this one in a long time, so I thought since it's the off season...

If I remember right, Kurt's original Rocketeer costume that made it's debut at his first Ice Wars is usually the traditional first costume flung into the flames.

Anyone else!?! Oh and don't forget the marshmallows and hot dogs!! ;) :)

Um, can we still mention Kurt's bright-red 1994 Ice Wars Rocketeer outfit (which made him look like a red Power Ranger, IMO!) even though he eventually burned that one himself? (a decision I totally agreed with, BTW!)

Other contributions I'd like to make to the bonfire would have to be:

...Shae-Lynn Bourne's long ponytail hairpiece (okay, so it's not really a costume, but I think Shae's natural hair looks much better on her!)
...the sequinned beige "showgirl" costume Lucinda Ruh wore in SOI this year (a little bit too revealing for my taste!)
...virtually all the costumes the skaters wore for Tara's hip-hop special (the only costume from that special I actually liked was the black-and-gold outfit Josée wore in her Aaliyah number) especially [/b:b6f44aa434] that hideous black-and-grey streaked mohawk wig poor Yuka Sato had to wear!
...Brian Boitano's Rapper's Delight costume (I never thought he could wear anything worse than those lavender velvet "Shaft" pajamas from 1997 Ice Wars, but apparently I was wrong!)
...Phillippe's George of the Jungle costume (or lack of costume, whichever you prefer!)
...Rudy's see-though black Studio 54 shirt and matching bright sequinned orange pants
...most of Leonova and Khavalko's one-piece jumpsuit outfits
...Scott Hamilton's baby-blue "Don Quihote" outfit
...Michelle Kwan's bright orange one-shoulder 2001 Worlds SP costume
...virtually all the outfits worn by ice dancers for their 1999/2000 Latin ODs
...almost everything Tatiana Tarasova designed for G&G between 1990 and 1992
...Elvis' blue Cirque De Soleil outfit with the puffy short sleeves

Phew! That's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure I'll be able to come up with more later! :)

Shae's Queen of Hearts dress from SA 2000...the one that was never heard from again thankfully.

Plushy's 100% gold MJ SP from GPF.

Will be adding to my list for sure once I get home.

How 'bout Shae's mind-of-its-own dress from the Golden Waltz at Worlds 2002. You know ... the one that decided to turn Shae into a flasher!

1. Irina's blue with illusion dress that started out so nude but got more coverage as time went on!! Unflattering and overused.
2. Just about anything Plushy wears--great skater, LOUSY costumes
3. Michelle's creamsicle dress. I'll admit it--I hated it. Loved the color, hated the dress. Memo to Michelle: You have NO reason anymore to ever wear another of Linda Fratianne's old costumes. Stick to your wonderful Vera Wang style
4. Tara's "little soldier" costume from SOI this year for her American Tribute. Sorry, she looked like she had on a jacket with no pants!!! Plus the military school look is just not her-she's too tiny for it.
5. Elvis "Village People Leather Biker Look." I don't care if his mom made it, Bleaaaaaah!!!!!!
6. Maria's Egyptian Queen Outfit--Maria, you're a blonde, not Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra!
7. All of Todd Eldredge's "drapey shirts" At one point this season, my husband asked "Doesn't he ever wear anything else?" Plus the Klingon Commander costume. (Or as someone at F$W called it, the "Amish Klingon.")
8. Sasha's "Firebird Corset." Memo to Sasha: If you are not endowed, a corset style makes this more obvious (refer to : Tara, "Swiss Miss" Olympic short program dress with the corset/stomacher).
9. Sarah's Star Trek Blue dress with the "pointy" bosom accents. See number 8 above. Stick to simple elegance Sarah, because that's what you are.
10. Just about every ice dance costume this year. Who produced all of those horrors???

In reverse, the top costumes this year (actually in no particular order, printed as thought out):

1. Michelle Schez Red (the final Costume)
2. Sasha Black and red Carmen with rose in hair
3. Michelle Blue Rach
4. Alexei "Winter"
5. Alexei "MITIM"
6. Sarah Olympic Long Dress See, simple elegance!!!
7. Michelle FOG
8. Takeshi Honda Olympic Short
9. Timmy Goebel Olympic Long--perfect for a Gene Kelly program
10. Sarah Fosse and Irina World/Olympic Long (tie)

I'm going to have to mention one in particular: that...thing...they put on Sergei for "Meditation." Shiny silver pants, puffy white shirt? Even Sergei looked almost girly in that one. Ugh.

My personal un-favorite from this past year: Peter Tchernyshev's OD outfit. What the h*ll where they thinking? I couldn't even watch the dance, I was blinded by all that hideous gold trim. Actually, as has been mentioned, there were almost no truly attractive dance costumes this past season.

I'd also like to nominate almost everything worn in the '80's. I truly hope the '80's comeback in off-ice fashion doesn't extend to on-ice fashion as well.

jcspkbfan
06-29-2002, 09:14 AM
Ohhh, don't burn Emmanuel's Purple Rain costume (lunges forward to hastily yank that one out of the bonfire)--that's probably one of my favorite costumes from this season! His SP costume from last year wasn't too bad, either.

But ITA that most of the rest of Emmanuel's costumes deserve to stay in the fire (especially any of the ones involving puffed sleeves!)

BTW, I found some more costumes I'd like to toss into the fire:

...virtually everything Bestiaminova and Bukin ever wore
...B&K's see-through Sadeness costumes
...virtually all of Urmanov's costumes (except for his Jumpin' Jack outfit and maybe his Beatles outfit, too)

Specific Emanuel outfits:

1998 SP - the turquoise puffed sleeves
1999 SP - the one eye, orange thing with heavy eye make-up
2002 SP - labelled "Heidi on Acid" by numerous posters

would like to add Dmitrenko's flesh coloured with the snake on the neck one too.

Fedor's turquoise green lizard outfit

Fusar-Poli and Margaglio's blue velvet bellbottom, pink sash with feather wings on the back R&J from SA.

Alexei Urmnanov has earned a place here too, particularly Prince of Egypt avec bra and the top heavy Phantom of the Opera costumes of recent year.

Also Krylova's Last of the Mohican will not add much to the fire as there wasn;t much to it, but in it ust go!

Yaguden's Broken Arrow, loved the program hated the costume!

Kurt's western one from last year, I guess he was trying to be funny, but it didn't quite work for me.

AP McD's Romeo and Juliette. too fussy.

I loved Elvis' Frogs in Space costume, with the leather and chrome, but I must admit the black plastic one for All Alone would be a nice addition to the flames.

ITA about Emmanual's costumes except for Isle of Man, it was good taste, evoked a mood, and made him look less stork-like

All Pluschenkos costumes are nice candidates as well. Poor guy can;t even get a break at COI, his grande finale costume is awful, too.

Gee we could go on and on with this topic, couldn't we?

Pretty much everything worn by Plushenko. Like his skating, hate whoever makes his costumes for competition.

Same goes for Butyrskaya, although I have seen a few of her creations that were nice. The pink dress she wore in the Oly LP was okay.

My vote for worst dressed female skater of all time: Surya Bonaly. I have yet to see her in a costume I liked. It's like someone goes out of their way to pick all the styles, colors, designs, etc that look the worst on her.

I personally am somewhat afraid to toss Plushenko's Sex Bomb costume on the flames... so everyone stand back as all that rubber may explode and cover the eyes of your young. 8O Also, his shiny gold number may cause some sparks so be careful!

And I would personally like to throw in all those arm covers that Viktoria Volchkova wears. Sleeves are fine but only when attached, such a pretty skater... I don't get it. :?:

I also liked F-P/M's outfits OD (I think they were the first of their outfits I've ever liked) but I agree that Peter's costume should be tossed in teh fire. The gold trim was way too distracting!

Can I add B/S psychedelic cheerleaders on crack costumes? I don't understand why they even had those; they usually dress so nicely... ;)

Too much fake flesh...In Ice Dance!?! Nah....

I'm sorry, but I just couldn't resist. :D ;)

One that w/out a doubt needs to be sent to the flames are those things Shen and Zhao wore at the Masters for their Beethoven number. The ones that looked that they stood in the middle of a Paintball game and were used for target practice. Those were beyond icky!!

Generally all the dancers have looked like an ugly lot for several years...like escapees from a fright show!  L&A's free dance outfit this year is the first one I would toss into that fire... Call me old-fashioned but I like to see skaters look nice, neat and dignified...this also means shaving and long hair put up! It IS possible to portray ANY program and still keep your dignity.

A good number of skaters over the years have also had serious "packaging" problems. Yes, let's get rid of that rubber giraffe shirt! That he-man outfit that Plushy wore also needs to be disposed of. We could empty Tonya's closet, and please... let's get Sachnovsky (spelling?...Chait's partner) a good haircut and a shave on a frequent basis! I also don't like looking at skaters that look like they are allergic to soap! This is just starters...

Sparkey, is this the outfit you were referring to (which happens to be one of my personal least-faves, too!):

Later on in the season, Marina put a skirt on her outfit, but IMO, it wasn't much of an improvement:

I actually love the Ilia Klimkin costume that was mentioned to be unattractive: the same with Maria's "Possession" dress and Vanessa's "Joan of Arc".

I'm surprised there haven't been many comments about Surya Bonaly and Nicole Bobek's closets. Most people I know have a field day with their fashion faux pas from the amateur days.

And this one:

http://www.pics.com/~janchak/PAGES/20124526.jpg.html

And maybe this one:

http://www.pics.com/~janchak/images/fs-0201837.jpg

(Can you tell I'm not a real big fan of the "showgirl" look--LOL!)

As for Surya, she's had sooo many costume disasters over the years, it's hard to choose one that really stands out among the rest, but I always thought these two outfits were especially hideous:

http://skatinginc.com/Skaters/Bonaly/UnderFire.asp
http://www.scratchspin.com/1999/worldpros99/bonaly1.html (the multicolored bodysuit/skirt thing in the first two photos)

The second Brian Orser photo Intensity20 posted is from a program he did from 1991 SOI called "Istanbul, Not Constantinople"--definitely the most hideous thing he's ever worn, IMO!

I don't really think Kristi's Yankee Doodle outfit was that bad (at least compared to 90% of the outfits already mentioned in this thread!), but I've always disliked this particular outfit of hers (I'm not a big fan of the skirt in behind/nothing in front look, either!):

07-20-2002, 09:11 PM
Can I add both of Eldredge's jumpsuits with the drapy neckline from the 97-98 season? First it was white, then got dyed blue; neither looked good at all!

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Grishuck and Platov: http://www.vesperis.com/skate/gbu/ti4.jpg

Takeshi Honda's first costume for his Sing Sing Sing program was just awful.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I would add most of Michelle Kwan's ill-fitting costumes, especially the ones from Vera Wang. Tape measure. It's a good thing.

Sasha's white SP dress from this year didn't flatter her at all- the straps and the cut of the skirt were wrong.

Sergei Grinkov's blue Reverie pajamas. Enough said.

Any of Sarah Hughes' costumes made by Tania Bass. She's 16, not 60. Enough with the frumpy designs.

Maria Butyrskaya's pantsuit from her Habanera program. Yikes.

I would keep Nicole's 98 short costume- I loved the Greek keyhole pattern- and Tara's Olympic SP just because I think the detail on it was wonderful. Did it work for Tara? No, but it would have worked on someone.
