On August 28, 2003, Todd Eldredge, 1996 World Champion, 6-time US National Champion, and 3-time US Olympian, will celebrate his 32nd birthday. Todd has made it a habit over his long and illustrious skating career to give back to those less fortunate. And as he turns 32, he is staying true to that form.
In lieu of presents, Todd is asking his fans to help commemorate his birthday by making donations to the Suite Dreams Project, a non-profit organization located in Rochester, Michigan. The mission of the Suite Dreams Project is to bring comfort and joy to children affected by serious medical conditions by creating healing environments in their homes, in hospitals and in our communities that improve their quality of life and speed recovery. Donations are tax deductible and anyone making a donation by August 30th will be thanked with a personalized autographed picture of Todd.
Donations will be used to help create a beautiful healing environment - a brand new state-of-the-art Family Resource Center - at the University of Michigan Health System's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. C.S. Mott is one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country, and this Family Resource Center will truly be a unique healing space for thousands of seriously ill children and their families who will use the Center. This healing environment will feature many areas including an entertainment area for kids and families complete with a new plasma TV screen and popcorn machine, a lounge area with comfy couches and chairs on which to rest and read and a formal dining room that can be reserved by families for private dining together during their hospital stay.
Research by experts in the fields of healthcare and design indicates that major health outcomes can be expected through creation of healing environments in hospitals including but not limited to: decreased stress, anxiety and fear during hospital visits, decreased length of hospital visits, decreased use of medication, increased comfort, increased recovery rate, increased functioning and learning and increased self esteem and empowerment.
The Suite Dreams Project recently finished a similar project when it created a healing environment in the new pediatric wing at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan. The wing opened in April 2003 to rave reviews from children and parents, health care workers and the general public.
This is the second major fundraising project Todd has sponsored since becoming a spokesperson for the charity in August 2001. The first project was the Suite Dreams Project "Jumps for Joy". With this project, Todd's fans made pledges on every triple jump he completed during the 2001-2002 competitive season. Todd had a very successful season and completed seventy triple jumps. His success in competition helped raise almost $1,500, which will also be used toward the Family Resource Center at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
