I bought a Golden Children's book called "I Love Skating!" for my daughter the other day. It was a cute little book. The little girl, Nastia mentions and skates with her friend, Emily. I believe it is Emily Hughes, but does anyone know who the parents are? She says they used to compete in Russia but decided to move to the U.S. to coach. I'm really curious. Thanks for any help.

I'm familiar with that book, but I don't know the answer to your question.

Whenever I go to the bookstore, I always go to the children's sports section and read the kids skating books. Nothing tops A Very Young Skater, a book that I grew up on (I took it out of the library every week in my elementary school). It was the beginning of a love affair with skating!

You have given me some good ideas for my daughter who has 2 loves in her life: Skating and Reading! I think I'm going to start looking for skating books for her. She already has read the entire series of books endorsed by Michelle Kwan and would be overjoyed to read others. I'm going to get "A Very Young Skater" for her. Any other ideas?

There is a book called "I Am A Skater" by Jane Feldman which is very similar to "A Very Young Skater," and it features Emily Hughes. Feldman is also the author of "I Love Skating," which is also a picture book.

"Sarah Hughes: Golden Girl" is at a grade 3 reading level.

I really love "Sophie Skates," by Rachel Isadora. It has great illustrations.

And if your daughter doesn't have "The Shiny Skates" by Elizabeth Koda-Callan, which comes with a necklace and every little girl I've known really loves, it's a nice investment.

For a younger reading level, "Kate Skates," by Jane O'Connor, which has about a grade 1 reading level.

I also like "Slip, Slide, Skate," by Gail Herman.

If your daughter likes Barbies, there is a Barbie book called "Ice Skating Dreams." The author is Diane Muldrow.

"The Magic Skates," Mary Henke (picture book)
"Cat on Ice," Susan Schade (reading level 1)
"Sarah on Ice: a skater's story," Kevin Lawrence.

My current fav children's skating book is "The Best Figure Skater in the Whole Wide World" by Linda Bailey. It's about a learn-to-skate student named Lizzy, and her disappointment when she doesn't get a leading role in the rink's ice show. The descriptions of Lizzy skating as a tree, and how she makes the role her very own, are just priceless. But for all time, I still love Noel Streatfeild's "Skating Shoes" (published under another title in England - can't remember what that one was). It's out of print now, unfortunately. I never owned it - just checked it out from the library - but I'd love to buy a copy someday.

BABYSKATES, go to amazon.ca, the Canadian Amazon. They'll ship to the US, and they had lots of skating books for kids I had never heard of. Too bad I'm not exactly a kid anymore;)

My favorite skating book as a kid was called I Skate! It was about an eleven-year-old Intermediate from Boston, and it followed her through the 1978 competitive season. The only place I've ever seen that one, outside of my elementary school library, was the used book shop in Lake Placid.

I just looked on Amazon.com. It is available as a used book. Sounds interesting. I might order a copy.

My daughter was given the book "The Shiny Skates" by Elizabeth Koda-Callan (with the little silver necklace with the pair of skates) when she was younger and a competitor. She also has "The Winning Edge" fiction series for girls. She received them as a gift when she was 10. It follows a group of figure skaters through moral and athletic challenges on and off the ice. She has 3 books from the series:

A Perfect Landing
Out in the Cold
Dreams of Gold

The author of the series is Lynn Kirby. Apparently, she is from Georgia and her daughter is a competitive figure skater(says on the back cover) Publisher is Tommy Nelson, Inc. Nashville. and you will find it in Juvenile-Fiction section.

Thanks for the great suggestions! I'm off to the bookstore! My daughter's class at school is having a "read in" and she is eager to get started.
