Any genre is ok, but please dont suggest:
Bond
Carmen
movie soundtracks, especially ones done by Todd or Yagudin

There is a lot of really good stuff on Cirque du Soleil CD's. I think it'd be a good choice for a Junior program!!

If you truly want something different then take a listen to "Russian Easter Overture" by Rimsky-Korsakov. Very powerful music with nice variation of tempo and dynamic range and several different themes. On
non-Todd and non-Alexei movie music you might want to listen to some
older movie soundtracks. I don't know of anyone who has ever used the "Patton" soundtrack. Also "The Great Escape" had some nice bits.
And last you might listen to "Spartacus" by Khachaturian.

I heard one of the elite U.S. male skaters might be using "Patton" (not confirmed yet) and pleeeeeaaase, let's have skaters take a break from "Spartacus" -- it was heard many times over at 2003 US Nationals! (although not performed by a male singles skater, I don't think ;))

I know these are movie soundtracks, but Patrick Doyle has some great music out there. He's done the soundtracks to things movies such as:
Henry V (used in Paul Wylie's olympic long when he won silver)

Sorry, hit enter to soon. Other movies scored by Patrick Doyle include:
Much Ado About Nothing
Hamlet
Love's Labor Lost
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

I've found the music to always be well orchestrated and great to listen to.

Another soundtrack is that to The Mission, though I've heard that used a few times.

I'm going to be the grouch here. Do you want something Unique or do you want something that other skaters have used. It is impossible to do both because "unique" means one of a kind

If you want something unusual, try some composers that haven't been used for a while.
Henry Mancini (Hatari, for example)
Rachel Portman (Nicholas Nickleby)
Miklos Rosza (El Cid, Ben Hur)
Bernard Herrman (Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still)

I always enjoy Gerry Goldsmith although he is used a lot
First Knight
Air Force One
Star Trek - First Contact
Star Trek - Insurrection
Medicine Man
Rudy
Hoosiers
Thirteenth Warrior
The Mummy
etc.

For a junior man, unless he is very creative, it might be best to use familiar music.

Moderators, could we move this to On Ice - Skaters, as it is more on-topic there and might get more responses? :-) Thanks.

thanks...some good ideas
Jordan Brauniger is using Patton for his long this year by the way.

I guess what we are looking for is a selection that hasnt been used often, and appeals to the audience.
"Hatari"...hhmmm that is an old one! it means "danger" in swahili
Think its still available?

If you're looking for something lesser known, but still audience friendly, what about....

If the skater in question has decent footwork, and a charismatic dancy style, what about "Mantecta" by Arturo Sandoval and Dizzy Gillespie (Cuban Jazz piece, many version out there, but I like the one on the "For Love or Country" soundtrack.

For fun and quirky, there's a surf version of "Hava Nagila" on Dick Dale's "Unknown Territory" album. Also there's a complilation CD of funky jazz flute music called "Heavy Flute: Funky Flute Grooves from the 60s and 70s" that has some interesting stuff on it.

Dark and creepy -- Philip Glass's "Dracula" (updated soundtrack to the old silent movie).

Peter Ostroushko has a CD called "Sacred Heart" ... there is a piece on there called "Three Crows" (3 minutes and 55 seconds long), which is a really rocked out folk reel. Starts out sounding like Irish fiddle, but is picked up with an electric guitar and a harmonica.

Hatari is available on Amazon. Here's the link -

http://www.inetsupermall.com/amazon_online_books.htm

Sorry, the link will only go to the main page. Just search popular music under Hatari.

I always thought the title track would make good skating music with a creative choreographer and skater.

Musical suggestion for a female skater

Danny Elfmann's The Black Stallion
From his
Music for a Darkened Theatre 2 soundtrack

For the male skater
Capricorn One
I forget who the composer is, but it is great, powerful and
dramatic music, with a lot of scope for choreography.

for the junior man, what do you think of Russian folk dance? this skater is more athletic than lyrical.

Is he into rock n roll?
Maybe some symphonic Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin?

How about an instrumental version of 'Belle' from the musical Notre Dame de Paris? (Ilya Klimkin used it in his exhibition this year - v. good)

The soundtrack from 'The Last of the Mohicans' is wonderful too.

The 'Amelie de Montmartre' soundtrack has both beautiful and funny music.

Good luck :)

How about some jazz music - it's seldom used by other skaters and there are lots of choices out there to fit most tastes.

How about cuts from the rock opera Tommy? There are some powerful symphonic pieces on the albumn.

Russian Folk dances can be used effectively. Be careful to use those that aren't completely hackneyed. Perhaps it would be better to use them in the short. The folkdances can get a little long in the free.

You also might want to give some thought to big band music. Good for the athletic skater and usually more enjoyable to the North American Audience.

Glenn Miller (try Tuxedo Junction or String of Pearls as they are not used too much.)
Benny Goodman
Gene Krupa
etc. etc.

There's a great piece Kurt Browning used more than a few years back. The title is--All Alone. It's a jazz guitar piece. I think the artist is Joe Sa....I can't remember his name, but I know he's a well know artist and I think the album is of the same name. Good luck!
