I remember Netty Kim was profiled on one of the CBC newsmagazine shows a few years ago. Basically, the reason why she quit skating was because there was a lot of extra pressure on her to get more difficult triples in order to compete at a high level. Netty could only do a 3-toe and 3-salchow (and maybe a 3-loop) when she won 1995 Canadians (other ladies could do more difficult jumps, but they fell) and didn't make it out of the qualifying round at 1995 Worlds. She couldn't get back to that level again and (if I remember correctly) developed some kind of illness or injury. At the time of the CBC profile, Netty had left skating and was attending university (I can't remember what she studied, though!) She seemed happy at the end of the profile, and hopefully she's still happy today! :)

I remember seeing that profile. If I remember correctly, I believe that she developed an eating disorder which was part of the difficulty continuing in competitive skating.

Netty's last competition was 1998 Nationals ... I believe she was in 3rd after the short with a pretty good short program .... behind J. Ro and Susan Humphreys. Her long was a different story when she singled out on probably half of her jumps. After that, she had begun training for next season .... but I guess due to pressure and other reasons, she retired.

After that, she continued on with her education (psychology) at York or UofT ... one of those universities. She also coaches now .... did a lot of work at Markham Skating Club, but now is mainly based out of RTC.

In fact, one night she got on the ice and did a triple salchow just out of the blue, LOL.

Could someone post the link to her most recent competition as well as to the artical? Thanks.

I just checked the Skate Canada results archive and found Netty's name listed in the senior ladies results for the 1997 Bank of Montreal Canadian Championships, Vancouver, British Columbia - February 6-9, 1997:

FSWer, I don't think there's an article online -- folks here are just summarizing what they remember and know about Netty's past career and current life.

ugh.. I remember '95 Nationals when she won in Halifax... what a depressing competition that was!!

I believe she only landed 2 triples in her long program, and just did all doubles... she didn't even attempt to do any other triples.

There were maybe 2 or 3 ladies who attempted a program with lots of triples, but they fell...and the ohter 15 or 20 all doubled or singled all of their jumps.

What a disaster that was!!!

95 was probably the worse year ....... Netty won with a Triple Sal and Loop ... and I think one of them was even two footed.

That was also J. Ro's first year senior and she completed 2 triple sals, a toe and a triple loop. She also attempted a triple lutz, but of course, was landed on two feet which was a very common occurance for her back then.

Susan Humphreys was third that year and the only triple attempted was a triple toe .. she had a nasty back injury.

Jamie Sale was also there that year ..... her hardest element completed in the Long Program .... Double Axel/Single Toe ..... fell on the triple toe and salchow.

Cathy Belanger only landed a Triple Flip I believe. It was the hardest triple completed that year at nats. 8O 8O 8O

I will *never* forget how pitiful that competition was... and the worst part is that most of the ladies didn't even *attempt* triples... I went to Nationals in Ottawa, and even though most of them were falling, at least they attempted them... A big improvement from 3 years earlier....

That was definitely a lacklustre Nationals...esp. with Elvis getting injured... I remember Seb. Britten winning - beating Ravi Walia...and IMO it was a complete and utter joke... I can't remember the details of the jumps.. but IIRC, Ravi landed almost double what Sebastien landed...including a quad and 1 or 2 3A.... Sebastien ended up winning, and we all thought it was a scandal...

Anyone remember the details of these 2 Long Programs??

wow.. that's surprising... a lot of people have been suggesting that Nicole should try pairs... Me included... I wonder if it would be more/less hard on her J. Arthritis?

Anyone know?

I remember that year, but Ravi DID NOT do the quad or the triple axel that year .... it wasn't even planned. In fact, no one landed a triple axel in the men's event at 95 nats.

Both Ravi and Sebastien fell on the 2axel in their program ... yes, double.

Sebastien completed 5 triples, a toe, two flips and two lutzes ... he also fell on the triple salchow and triple loop ... they were nasty falls too. Even hit the boards.

Ravi landed some really nice triples .... he definitely had at least 5 .. one of each - sal, toe, loop, flip, lutz .... but the quality compared to Sebastien was not even close. It was in 97 when Ravi landed his quad at Skate Canada.

I think it would be harder for her with
her juvenile athritis especially on the throw jumps
maybe ice dance would be easier for her

I would love to see Nicole win a national title :)

Really? Well, my bad then.. I just remmeber thinking that he was SO much better in the LP... as great as Sebastien won, I didn't feel he 'deserved' it on that night....

Thanks for the info!

I don't think dance would necessarily be easier for someone with juvenile arthritis. The impact of landing jumps and throws is not a factor, but the emphasis on knee bend and posture in dance causes knee and back problems in lots of girls without arthritis. Given that Nicole already has problems with her knees, I don't think dance is necessarily a better option.

Getting further and further off topic here, but ... are we sure it was the same Nicole Watt who did pairs? I saw that TV biography of her a while back and there was no mention of her ever doing pairs.

Getting back to Netty, I also saw that program on CBC. That was the first time I was aware that Netty had an eating disorder in spite of the fact that my daughter was training on the same sessions as was Netty. I always felt that Netty's problem was lack of complete program run-throughs in training.
