A revised version of my doctoral dissertation will be published as a book by Wesleyan University Press next month under the title Culture on Ice: Figure Skating and Cultural Meaning.
To give a general idea of the scope, it's categorized on the cover under "Sports / Cultural Studies / Gender Studies" and for Library of Congress cataloging as "1. Skating -- Social aspects 2. Sex role."
For more information, see:

One endorsement that didn't make the on-line blurb that will be more meaningful to skating fans and insiders than to academics:
"A brilliant exploration of the fascinating world of figure. It includes a detailed history of the sport from its earliest beginnings and delves into its many facets. A superb and thoughtful work." --Eugene Turner, figure skating champion (U.S. men's champion in 1940 and '41)

Very Interested!!! I'm looking forward to reading it.
Congratulations on getting your diss. published and, of course, on finishing it! What field is your degree in?

Yay, Ellyn! I ordered one copy for me and another as a gift for a friend of mine. I am greatly looking forward to reading a figure skating book that isn't just another coffee table book and has actually been fact-checked.

My degrees are in theatre, with a specialization in critical theory for the doctoral work.

Yay Ellyn, I have been waiting for this announcement. :)
I can remember a discussion on F$W about the coming book over a year and a half ago or a little longer. At the time a 2003 publishing date was mention, I think March, I'm thinking at the time what a long wait ;)
I just pre-ordered at Amazon, I guess I have to wait a bit longer.
Good luck on the sales, I hope the book is a hit.

IMPRESSIVE! I really cannot wait to read this! I must say, its really high time someone who knows skating wrote such a book, because I've read some articles by folks who don't and they get it all wrong, IMHO.
What a coincidence! My daughter, who used to skate (passed her intermediate tests) and who has watched her sister skate for many years, just wrote a paper for a sociology class. She described skating as a separate culture and backed up her ideas with years of observed behavior and knowledge of local clubs. She will be very interested in your book (me too!)

Congratulations Ellyn! I am really looking forward to reading your work. Skating can certainly use a book "that got it right."

Me too! That Amazon website is WAY too easy to order things from--I just *had* to throw in a book about Maui beaches and one on the Big Island.
Can't wait to see it Ellyn--think we could arrange a "cyber author's signing" event? We could tuck your e-mail to us inside our copy of your book??
"Your book"--now that's an impressive concept.8O 8O

Ellyn,
Sounds great!
One book on almost the same subject that I really enjoyed is:
Women on Ice: Feminist Responses to the Tonya Harding - Nancy Kerrigan Spectacle.
Thanks for contributing to Women on Ice, and thanks for writing this new book!
Can't wait to read it :)

Things are so tight that I can't even afford the paperback at this time. So - I am requesting that my library order a copy.

Yes, Dave, I believe Michelle's face is visible in the picture shown on the book cover that the link references. ;)

Aww, Dave, you mean skating really is just about appealing to the male gaze after all? Oops, too late for a rewrite!
