Just reading a shouting match on another thread about worlds where someone got mad at someone else for calling all the skaters by their first names and only Kwan by her last name....
eek!
Personally, I usually call all the skaters by their last names because I don't want anyone to think I know them. It seems to me that calling them by their first names somehow implies I know them. But then I seem to alternate between first and last.
I can't even believe I worry about this stuff. I mean who CARES!
I guess i am just in the post worlds funk and have nothing worthwhile to say. 6 months of no skating to look forward to.........sigh.Skate AMerica seems a long way off. I live within about 3 hours of it so if Cohen is going, maybe I will too............

If I don't know the skater very well, I will refer to them by costume, music choice or a standout move. When I first saw Sasha it was "little thing with the big splits." Hubert was Human Zamboni after '92 Olympics. I think even Jill Trenary was Snowflake Girl for one particularly stunning dress.

I think I've mentioned this before, but my husband thinks up nicknames for all of the skaters. I swear, I love Sasha Cohen, but I can't look at her now without thinking "Squishy Colon"!

My dad refers to Tara as "Papinski".

I think when discussing about skaters especially at forums such as skatingforums, we all have our "nicknames" for the skaters we gush about. I find alot of times when I am talking about pairs or icedancers I always use their initials, such as B&K, or S&P. I always called Plushenko Plushy.

I tend to call them by their first names. It would sound weird to me called Shae and Vic, Bourne and Kraatz. However, this only applies to skaters I'm a fan of. If I don't know of a skater too well, I tend to use their full name.

On the boards I tend to be lazy and type MK instead of Michelle but my mom and I refer to her as "our girl" or Michy. My husband has silly names that only mean something to him for all of the girl skaters. Sarah is Steve and Sasha is George...
I tend to call Micheal Mike and Tim I call Timmy and Plushenko I refer to as Plushy and Yagudin is Yags...for a long time Anton and Elena were skate in the head because we could not remember their names. There is one pair that I will not name that my mom and I call Dull and Duller.

Dull and Duller OMG now that makes me curious.. LOL
I normally call skaters I'm fans of by their first names, but Sarah Hughes and Michelle Kwan I normally use their full name, just cuz there are quite a few Michelle's and Sarahs. (I know like 3 of each @ my rink!)
But... sasha cohen=squishy colon? Oh my. Thats...hmmm I don't know if I like it or not, lol! It doesn't really fit, IMO!

In writing I invariably use the following but not in speaking:
Yags
Plushy
Slute
Bute
and initials for all pairs like "B&S" or whatever.
Who the heck is "dull and duller"!!??????

I tend not to use nicknames=plushy etc because I don't know these people personally. I usually alternate between using first names or last depending on what I feel like typing.

When talking to my non-follower-of-skating friend, I refer to Sasha as the bendy girl. :)

When I write in board room or talk to my friends (that few that knows about figure skating, this is how I referred to them)
Plushy
Ilia (Klimkin)
Kulik
Yags
Sasha (Abt)
Baboo
Timmy
For the men, that are not listed, I use their last names, and for the ladies I use their name, and for dance and pair, I usually just mention (when I'm talking) just one of the members.
I fall in the category of last names or both, never just first names. I'm a formal kind of person and don't feel comfortable referring to people I don't know with familiarity.
I don't have nicknames for skaters, although my husband always refers to Jennifer Robinson as "the Goose" for her long neck :)
