I am going to see COI on this Thursday, 4/10/03 and since I am sitting in the 2nd row for once I am thinking I shouldn't use the 800mm speed. Does anyone know if I should use 400mm and set it at 800 speed since I won't be using a flash?
Thanks for all replies.

You still have to stop the action so I would use 800 film. Also COI usually does not have good lighting so the 800 will help there also.

I agree. COI doesn't have the greatest lighting, the last time I attended a COI show, my pictures turned out really kinda dark which I was rather diapointed. I'd go with the 800 speed film. Have fun at the show

How about for digital camera setttings???
ISO setttings are 100, 200, 300, 400 or auto on my camera. What other settings should be set on digital????
I'm going to be taking pictures coming up at SOI and the Nationals in Jan...
Thanks,
Brett

If you're new to photography, especially action photography, I highly recommend that you take practice shots of local sporting events before the big event. I took photography for the first time really at this year's Worlds and so many of my photographs have been disappointing, e.g. the auto focus focused on the audience instead of the skater, fuzzy pictures, awful compositions, and pictures that were cropped in all the wrong places  I also didn't realize it's better to position your camera vertically to get the most of a skater within a shot until the middle of the week and by that time I had already shot many rolls of films. I did get a few that came out nice though but I was hoping for more.

I'm not sure about digital camera's since I don't have one, however I suggest for ANY fan of figure skating who enjoys taking pictures at shows/events I recommend this mailing list:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SkatingPhotography/
I know alot of members have digital camera's who have taken pictures at shows/events and I am sure they would give some great tips.
Again I recommend this mailing list to ANYONE who loves taking pictures at figure skating shows/competitions. I learned alot from this list.
