earlier this year...sorry, the search seems to be disabled....we were talking about tax incentives for sports activities in Canada--ie support for families of figure skating--and other sports...

well, I may not have gotten the numbers crunched yet...but persistence does pay off somewhat....

I am very happy [ok, now that everyone will know I'm PC] to say that one of the federal PC leadership candidates [who I've been bothering about this topic for some time-because he's the one likely to win the campaign] has it as part of his policy platform!!!!!! I had hoped it would be added---because I was asked for further information, statement, etc....and its there!!!!!

This was what I provided them--and some of this he has apparently used in speeches!!!! What I had tried to characterize it as was: [part of my original statement sent-ok, I was on a rant ]

"In an era of declining health care monies, and millions of Canadians ranking the health care system as their number one priority, the Government can and must do better.

In the interests of promoting active, fit and healthy lifestyles, the government of Canada should be offering Canadian working families tax credits and incentives for enrolling themselves and/or their children in sports related programs.

As studies have indicated, enrolling youth in sports, and modelling this behaviour as adults, provides communities with lower crime rates, greater volunteerism and community involvement, and fosters active, fit, healthy lifestyles. Such measures can only create a better social fabric for both our communities and our health care system generally.

.....blah, blah...

Amateur sports plays a key role in the culture of Canada. Children can and do deserve the opportunity to reach for the stars. Athletic heros which the Government only too easily trots before the cameras deserve stable funding and incentives to allow them to reach their goals. And it starts from the beginning. In the sport with which we are involved, the costs of training locations, competitions, coaching and equipment are not only enormous; they are excessive.

We choose to engage ourselves or our children in thiese sports not of our own volition, but to foster hopes and dreams. Working Canadian families are struggling to support their loved ones in these sports. In particular, athletes training in Olympic eligible sports spend thousands of dollars each year in an effort to receive the best training and coaching their families can afford. Such sacricife in most sports starts much younger than the teen years where their talent is suddenly noticed. While providing monies to the national sport federations for athlete development is commendable, it does little to rebuild the young grassroots athletes struggling to make their mark.

I am seeking a government with leadership. A government that is willing to recognize the sacrifice and hard work of families. A government that is willing to provide tax incentives to families who have members enrolled in sports programs. That is willing to allow some of the many financial sacrifices to be rewarded.

blah...blah...

A little thing I suppose.....but its not as though our current government is listening....and even if we can ever get it through it will happen as a private members bill anyway....

I'm soooo...excited!!!

The next step will be getting the PC's into government again...THAT could take some doing...*sigh*...

I'm really glad to hear that *someone* up there realizes how important such tax incentives could be -- for *all* income levels. The more we can do to promote healthy lifestyle choices for our kids, the better off our society as a whole will be.

Here's hoping something comes of it!
