On the worlds thread I posted a breakdown of referees used in ISU major senior events since SLC Olympic Winter Games.
THIS POST IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED, but be assured that I am not a mathmetics scholar but curious all the same.
Since I was on a roll (and not wanting to attack the housework) I decided to look further into the numbers of ISU Referees and International Competition Referees to see the size of the pool from which referees can be appointed. Please advise of any errors found.
ISU Referees can be appointed at ISU Championships (Olympics, Worlds, Euro's & 4CC's).
International Referees can be appointed to International competitions, including grand prix events.
ISU Referees for Mens, Ladies and Pairs - 54 .
ISU Referees for Dance - 29
International Competition Referees; men's,ladies & dance - 97
International Competition Referees; dance - 32
FOR GRAND PRIX EVENTS THE TOTAL POOL from which referees in singles and pairs can be appointed is a whopping 151.
DANCE does well, considering it takes up 25% of the sport with 61 referees available.
Here are more interesting facts.
SINGLES & PAIRS
ISU Referees come from 26 different nations.
International Competition Referees come from 28 nations.
DANCE
ISU referees come from 19 nations
International Competitions referees come from 14 nations.
more on dance. 21 Nations can field a referee or assistant referee to international competition (again, inlcuding GP events)
And in singles and pairs - 29 nations can field refs or asistant refs to international competition.
DANCE: There are 61 referees from 21 nations available for the Grand Prix and Final since SLC; ie; 7 events that ONLY used refs from 4 countries. ITA -2, RUS - 2, CAN -2 and USA 1.
The 3 ISU Championship events since SLC have a pool of refs from 19 countries and appointed refs from 3 countries, GBR, RUS & CAN. Therefore, of the 10 major ISU events since 2002 Worlds, referees from only 5 different countries were appointed.
SINGLES & PAIRS; There are 151 referees available from 28 nations for the Grand Prix series and Final. ie: 7 events.
Since SLC Olympics, For 21 events, ONLY 11 nations had their referees appointed. RUS - 5, USA - 4, JPN - 3, GER - 2, and one each for CZE,FIN, SLOVAKIA, FRA, POL & CAN.
The 3 ISU Championships since SLC have a pool of 54 Referees from 29 nations. Of the 9 events (mens, ladies & pairs) ONLY 5 countries had their refs appointed. JPN -3, USA - 2, RUS -2, and one each for SLOVAKIA & SWEDEN.
If you take the ISU blurb seriously, then you'll read and hear that all referees come from the ISU. I guess then that Cinquanta only has a telephone line that reaches 13 countries instead of the 50 or so member federations that could supply him numerous referees as approved and published by the ISU for major events.
The argument that only the best referees can do major events doesn't hold water because they are appointed at either ISU Referee or International Referee level with no distinctions. PUBLICLY.
Aren't the words... accountable and transparent looking good? I wish they were used in the figure skating world.
