I was watching my old tapes from the Calgary 88 games, and one thing I miss is the required double as part of the combination in the short. Especially the double loop.
I guess this applies to the women more than the men, in that every skater (apart from Slutskaya and Hughes) goes for a triple lutz/double toe loop.
I'd like to see a little variety. Thank goodness at least, Sokolova is upping the ante with a 3lutz/3toe.

the jump combination is still required in the short... ?!?!?!?
however, i do agree with you saying that it does need to be upped!!!! I have said this in other threads, but i still agree, I wanna see something different (for the ladies) i am just not impressed with 3 lutz/2toe anymore...

In 1988 and for several years before, the second part of the combination (in the short program) was designated. In '88 it had to be a loop. The first part was the skaters choice. Thus, Boitano did a 3 axel/2loop, while Wylie, for example, did a 3lutz/2loop. Maybe it was then that Kurt Browning came up with his 3sal/3loop although he didn't perform it then.
It might be fun to see the "designated jump" in a limited manner. It still exists in novice and junior in the single jump. I like that idea as it requires the skaters to really work on a particular jump from time to time. It was definitely a disadvantage, though, to those whose weakness happened to be the required jump.

At Japanese Nationals SP, top 9 ladies attempted(or planed) 6 different combos in current rule.
Yukari Nakano: 3Axel-2Toe
Miki Ando: 3Lutz-3Loop
Mao Asada: 3Flip-3Loop
Mai Asada: 3Flip-3Toe
Fumie Suguri, Yoshie Onda, Shizuka Arakawa: 3Lutz-2Toe
Yukina Ota, Akiko Suzuki: 3Flip-2Toe
(Nakano stepped out 3Axel, Suguri doubled 3Lutz,
Mao Asada fell on 3Flip then added 2Toe)
I enjoyed it!
