Very tongue-in-cheek article by Paul Martini on iskater.com.

http://www.iskater.com/headlines/archive/2002june/Kyoto4.htm

He may not know how to run an e-business or build customer loyalty, but you can't argue that he knows a lot about skating. He raises some good issues.

Would you mind providing a synopsis of the article? I, like many members here, refuse to visit i$kater on principle. ;) :D

Spinner,

basically, the article said that it [i:881ea46f0b]seems[/i:881ea46f0b] like the ISU have implemented a lot of changes, when in fact, what they have [i:881ea46f0b]not[/i:881ea46f0b] changed is more telling of how complacent the ISU is towards fixing the problems in judging.

They include:
1. Cinquanta was re-elected as president.
2. They did not adopt the American proposal to implement a life-time ban on those officials who are caught cheating.

I did this from memory, so if i've left out anything, someone else please fill it in.

I'd say that Dragonlady's post was more compelling. She mentioned a lot of things that Martini didn't mention in his article. I'm sure there's a reason for it, probly for a more focussed article.

x.x.

OK, here goes:

The title of the article is "Has the Future of Figure Skating Changed?" Basically, he criticizes Speedy and the ISU for failing to adopt the USA proposal on lifetime bans and says that the Canadian proposal accomplishes nothing and basically makes the problem worse. He wonders what the long-term impact on the public's view of skating will be, specifically, whether parents will continue to support their children in the sport if they view it as corrupt.

Here are some interesting quotes about the election. (I don't think posting just these violates copyright, right?)

[quote:632c559225]In any organization, effective and positive change is the result of strong leadership. The members of the ISU clearly feel that they have a strong leader in Mr. Ottavio Cinquanta, who retains his position as the President via acclamation. Mr. Cinquanta’s brilliant performances during his press conferences in Salt Lake City would have certainly made it unthinkable for anyone to contest him for the President’s Chair!

The membership also felt that Mr. David Dore, who has been at the helm of skating in Canada for the past fifteen years, would be an excellent choice to assist Mr. Cinquanta. Voted in as Second Vice President (Figure Skating), he replaces Mr. Katsuichiro Hisanaga of Japan. The solid stance that Mr. Dore has taken on the scandal in Salt Lake and his unwavering support of Canadian judge Jean Senft during her judging scandal accusations from ’98 Nagano does little to comfort those who cry out for the necessary change in the sport.

You're ok Debbie. We know the author and you only posted pieces of the article. As far as I know that's accepted Internet ettiquette. Oh yes, thanks for the synopsis!

You also did the other important thing - you credited the source.

If you're referring to the Tatiana Flade episode Jenny, IIRC iskater DID credit the source, but apparently she didn't want the credit. What I don't understand is how she claimed to be "outed" by the disclosure, yet began her FSW protest post with something along the lines of "As most of you are probably already aware, I am Tatiana Flade". I have a feeling she had pre-existing bitterness towards iskater. Anyway, at least Martini accepted full responsibility and apologized to her for any misunderstanding. Now, if only he'd do the same about the outrageous membership fee....
