That's right...30 years ago today Karen Magnussen won the ladies World title. March 1, 1973. It is a holiday in my house.
She did it her way.
Boy I remember that. Kind of dates me doesn't it.
But it was a great skate.

Oh, I remember too! Terrific Canadian skater! Remember her spirals? Very very strong edges!

I'd just like to say that I totally remember Karen winning. Well, not techincally, because I'm only 17, but I think that Karen was the best thing in Canada ever. She's my favourite!!!
I got her autograph at a competition a couple months ago. It sits in my room. I love it. "Happy Anniversary" Karen!!!

I can't visualize Karen's skating, but I remember liking her. I cried and cried the Christmas I didn't receive her doll after much begging and pleading. Scarred for life!

Hey, we have a Canadian ladies world champion? How come I didn't know that(better start looking into the history books)..
I have not seen this particular skater's performence, but she is Canada and a world champion, works for me.
Karen is not our only World Champion. Don't forget Petra Burka and Barbara Ann Scott.
I can't remember Karen Magnussen's win since I wasn't yet born at the time (my Mother was pregnant with me at the time), but I have seen her on tape and really enjoyed those tapes. I actually still have my Mother's "Karen Magnussen" skates.

OMG I just looked at the thread title...what a mess..it should read
Canadian woman wins World Ladies title...
...I don't drink so I can't even say I was hung over.
Goodness sakes, can't even blame it on my horrid typing skills.

I went to a presentation that Karen did recently in Qualicum Beach, BC as part of an Extraordinary Women series sponsored by the Federation of University Women. She was a wonderful speaker - so down to earth and full of funny stories about her skating career. I didn't realize some things about her history, like about how she had overcome some serious injuries during her skating career. She was really quite an inspiration. I was sitting with a couple of young skaters - the young man had competed recently at Canadian Jr. Nationals. He had received a bursary (sounds like one of several) that Karen presents every year. And she is of course still coaching young skaters at the Northshore Winter Club in Vancouver where she started her skating I understand.
