Aw, poor Marianne Dubuc and Michelle Currie............

Are the international assignments up, also?

Also, how come there are only two senior pairs? Are there really no other senior canadian pair teams? Hm, now that I think of it, I think most have split! But, two? That seems so little!

No international assignments up yet except for one summer developmental event. I'm waiting with baited breath to see who's going where. I think it will definitely be an interesting year .... especially the men .... no Fedor Andreev either !!

We have nobody else who qualifies to compete at these events. With Marcoux & Marcotte, Purdy & Maguire, and Saurette & Fecteau gone, nobody can replace them.

Why would they choose Nadine Gosslin over Marianne Dubuc or even Michelle Currie. Nadine is just so inconsistent and she has had so many chances in national/international competition, IMO they should have gone with the future (Dubuc or Currie).

It's based on last year's placements at nationals, which is why Fedor is not listed.

However, that doesn't mean he and other skaters won't get international assignments.

I agree..I think Marianne should have been named to the team-I hope she gets assignments!! She did better in the short program at SC than Bellemare or Watt! She's improved considerably since. I guess she will have to skate well at Nationals to earn her spot to the team.

I'm curious as to why Fedor was not named..

I'm also a bit puzzled about Andreev .... in the absense of Stoijko, there's definitely the room on the team.

Insofar as Marianne Dubuc is concerned, I had occasion to watch her performance at Nationals last year with the sound muted, and the absence of music really made the deficiencies in her presentation obvious. Without music, it just looked like she was rushing around from element to element ... no flow, no style. And, her posture is terrible. It also doesn't help that she is relatively short-legged which doesn't help the appearance of flow and extension. While she is a pretty consistent jumper, she really needs to work on presentation ... which both Watt and Currie have in good measure.

Just my .02, and I hope I don't get flamed.

canskater, I do agree with you regarding Dubuc's presentation-however, after seeing her at Skate Canada and then Nationals, you see that she had made huge improvements where that is concerned.

She still has a lot of work to do to improve her presentation (a new choreographer would help) but she is improving. I felt that despite the presentation, she should have placed ahead of Gosselin at Nationals.

Shae & Vic -

Purdy and Maguire are still together (confirmed from a reliable source) however they finished lower than 5th at Senior Nationals and it appears as though Skate Canada stuck to those guidelines when naming these teams.

I believe the guidelines suggest that these folks may be considered for international assignments but I think others will be considered as well. For example the one junior pair are no longer age eligible for junior (McEwan & Williamse) so I am not sure where they will be considered However teams like Purdy and Maquire and some of the new teams that we have heard of from the Wirtz camp will likely be monitored during the summer to fill some of the senior grand prix spots since we only have two senior pairs named to the senior national team.

Hi Lise:

Actually I can't really comment on Gosselin because I just have no recollection of what her performance was like at Nationals ..... who knows .... maybe it wasn't memorable.

Going back to my comment on Dubuc .... her physical body type is quite similar to that of Karen Magnussen .... and she rose to Olympic Silver Medalist and World Champion!! I hope the new choreographer works for Marianne and that we see good things from her in terms of presentation ....

I'm also very curious to see how Nicole Watt has (or has not) improved this year. She made (in my opinion) a quantum leap last year .... I hope the trend continues.

Would anyone know why Marie-Luc Jodian is not on the team?? She was 3rd in novcie and 3rd in juniors then 12th in juniors i beleive and if you are on it one year you get another, like Courtney Sokal. Marie-Luc should be on it again..........

Because Courtney moved up to senior for Nationals while Marie-Luc stayed in Junior. Therefore Courtney gets the year of grace while Marie-Luc would have had to place top 5 in Jr. again.

I think that's how it works. There's the year of grace for novice moving to junior but nothing on junior moving to senior...I could very well be wrong.

Fedor was given one GP assignment last season, and he totally blew it. He was 6th at nationals, which doesn't qualify for the national team. When he's on, he's a wonderful skater, but IMO he's lucky SC keeps giving him chances.

Okay thank you! But now, how did Amanda Billings qualify? She was 4th in novice in 2001, and top 3 are the National Team. Then this year she was 7th in juniors, where top 5 are the team.... I'm just wondering.....

I never looked at her results...hmmm...no idea on that one.

btw congrats Keegan on now being on the Jr. National team!
You're now profiled :)

Are Lefebvre and Lanning still together?

lutzputz

Lefebvre and Lanning have split up.

Sylvia

Lefebvre/Lanning must have split; otherwise, as 5th place finishers at Nationals, they would have been autmatically named to the 2002-3 Senior Team.

Amanda Billings won the silver at Mladost Trophy this past March, so I can understand her being named to the junior team, despite not qualifying under last year's guideline (not published on this year's updated teams page) which read:
"In addition, skaters on the team the previous year
as Novice podium finishers who moved up to Junior,
qualified and competed at Canadians in Junior but
failed to make the top five remain on the team for
one year."

As for Courtney Sokal, Eriq Lyons, and Maxim Lippé, I'm guessing Skate Canada has a new guideline that reads something like:
"In addition, skaters on the team the previous year
as Junior podium finishers who moved up to Senior,
qualified and competed at Canadians in Senior but
failed to make the top five remain on the team for
one year."
