I don't think anyone has posted this anywhere yet, but the Globe And Mail is conducting an online poll to decide whether or not tax dollars should go towards supporting Canada's athlete's... you can access the poll at http://www.globeandmail.ca; the poll is at the top right hand side of the home page. As strange as it seems, politicans actually pay attention to this sort of thing, so vote YES!!!

SC is very aware of this poll and is encouraging people to vote.

Unfortunately the poll seems to have been replaced already by one on racial discrimination in the courts. (Unless I am not looking in the right place.)

I am forwarding the article to our local federal MP along with some of my own personal feelings. It is nuts the amount of money the parents of young athletes must dole out, if they can, and some support must come. I’m pissed with these politicians lack of leadership and he is going to hear about it! I hope some others join in and write their MP’s.

Can you say, "Cover my butt, quickly!!!!!" ??? I knew ya could!

Chrétien reverses athlete funding plan (http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030221.wathle21/BNStory/Front)

SURE, the increased funding was *mistakenly* tied to winning the 2010 Olympic bid. Just like you were gonna dump the GST, huh? Yeah, right...

Personally I don't care why Chretien took the Olympic condition off. The fact is that he did, and he did it quickly. I am not always a big supporter but I'm willing to give credit when they do the right thing. And in this case, they did - the GST notwithstanding.

This is a drop in the bucket. He needs to give tax credits to parents of elite level athletes dollar for dollar equal to the amount spent on developing the Olympic athletes. The parents need the support.

I agree that there are a lot of other things that could be done to help our amateur athletes and their parents. In fact I think it needs to start much earlier with funding being available to make physical education and sports a daily requirement for all students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Sports and fitness should be publicly funded as a necessary part of Canadians' lifestyle. In supporting the government, I was only referring to this one issue - the fact that this funding was originally tied to Vancouver -Whistler getting the Olympics. and they took that provision off quickly and without a fight. That should be applauded IMO.

The connection shouldn't have been made in the first place.
