An article appeared in today's Washington Post about the SkateFAIR group that has sprung up in the past week following :
Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A57633-2003Jan28.html)
There should be a website up within days to provide more information about the group and its principles.

And risk getting arrested and held as a material witness in the "mobster" trial? That sure would be a good one!

Better question - will anyone show if the US decides to go to war before then?
Iggles--they showed up in 1991. Why not now?

Why not now - because if one has just declared war on another country, one should consider it reasonable that the country being attacked will attempt to find a way to fight back.
A target they may have in mind would be the capital city of the attacking country.
Might just be me, but if we decide to attack a country suspected of having biological, chemical or nuclear weapons, the last place I myself will be during the "war" is Washington, DC.
Iggles--yeah, but you're assuming this is different than in 91. It's NO different. The event will still be held and people will still show up.

Worlds in 1991 wasn't held in DC. That is the difference I'm looking at here.

I don't think terrorists would attack a figure skating competition. Maybe a hockey or baseball event but skating just isn't high profile enough.

Maybe it's my lack of sleep, but I was worried this topic was about a street fight between rival camps of fans!! 8O
LOL!!
Yeah, I can see that: two rival skate gangs, the Blades and the Boots. *cue West Side Story music here*

Terrorists would not attack a figure skating competition; that is not what Iggles is referring to.
If anyone should attack the White House or the U.S. Capitol (do you agree that those are indeed potential targets in a war?) with the kind of weapons Iggles mentions, the MCI Center, which is probably less than a mile from either of those locations, would not be a safe place to be.
I live in DC, I'm not going to pick up and move to a different city just because there might be a war and there's a slim chance that the city might be attacked. But I can understand that if events develop so that that chance becomes less than slim, skaters (and their parents) and skating officials might not consider a skating competition a good enough reason to go to a potential target city. There's a reason why Skate Israel has been canceled the last two years.

Meli - just for you:
(to the tune of "Tonight")
"Sasha's going to get her kicks/skids/spirals tonight
She'll beat the other chicks tonight
There won't be any stumbles tonight
The golden girls will fumble tonight
Tonight" ;)

Well, in one sense, it truly is...just perhaps on an international scale?

Oh good grief, now you have my old "skit night" brain cells turned on...
"When you're a Blade, you're a Blade all the way...
From your first outside edge to your triples today..."
Anybody for "SkateSide Story?"

Little boy, you've got quads, you're a gold medal man!"
