View Full Version : Pairs lifts question

Re-watching the Nationals Short Pairs programs this evening reminded of a question I had while at Nationals.
I noticed that very few pairs of skaters are doing one-arm lifts. In other words, almost no one is doing a lift where the man holds the woman with one arm while she lets go with both hands. I saw a lot more holds where the man held her with one arm, but she kept one hand on his shoulder, even in the top pairs.
Is the one-arm hold being discouraged now, after some of those bad falls of recent years? Or just not being done at the moment?
Thanks :).

It's how comfortable and how safe both partners feels. If they think they might fall, why risk it.
This year the required lift in the short program is the hip lift. The man is supposed to hold the lady with one arm at her hip. I think it is a very novice lift and kind of not wow-look-at-that. I would prefer if each pair did their own lifts. Then again the ISU are using the new judging sytem and require everyone to stick to one rule.

Actually, as long as the lift goes up like a hip lift (or whatever the requirement may be) I believe the pair can then vary the positions and holds throughout the remainder of the lift.

This year's requirement is the hip lift, which basically means 99% of the pairs are going to start with star lifts, or a variation on a star lift. After the takeoff, the pairs is free to take to whatever holds or positions they would like. One arm star lifts are fairly difficult, and require extremely good balance. The reason why the ISU makes each pair do the same type of lift is so the judges are able to compare what different pairs can do with the same takeoff.

Ah, but that's where the creativity comes into play. How do you get from a press to a variety of different holds and positions? We'll have to wait and see how it turns out.
