View Full Version : Is there a Junior Ladies skater with a "ara" name?
This is a silly Thread.
I am going by Tara and Sarah winning Olympic Golds, and was wanting to watching for an Amara, Lara, Butyrskara, etc. coming up in the Junior ranks! LOLOL

LOL!
There's an Erica (something) and an Adriana (DeSanctis) who are 2nd and 3rd going into the LP. Their names end in an "a" sound. Is that close enough? :)
Hmmmm, I am gonna hold out for an actual "ara" name, okay? ;)

Kind of a pointless comment, but over here in Britain, Tara and Sarah are pronounced differently, they don't rhyme. :)

The way we pronounce it in England, Tara would be the same as Sara, like, T-are-ra, and S-are-a, as if the word are was the middle sound, but Sarah is like s-air-ah, as if the middle sound was air.
Does anyone remember Kara Sharpe, from that article in...oh, well, I forget what magazine! But she was a young up-an-comer. What ever happened to her?
Oh hey, I just remembered where I saw that, and grabbed it off my shelf. Here's a scan:

Doubtful, but maybe that whole Olympic name-rhyme thing is a curse. She'll just have to deal with it :D

When was the article published, and where is the skater from? I've never heard of her, and I follow lower level competitions pretty closely--novice level and up around the country, juvenile and up in the New England area.

Kind of yeah. The "Tar" bit rhymes with "car" (as in motorcar). Sarah has more of an "e" sound on the "Sar" bit. (I think we pronounce Sarah the same though?) Kind of like "Serah". :)

Just to add - it depends on where you come from though. If you've got an accent like Cilla Black (scouse, aka from Liverpool), you pronounce Sarah "sir"-ah. :)

I think that was from the Ice Kings and Queens publication that came out, oh, a few years ago. I have one somewhere. I remember seeing that picture.

OMG that was quite a few years ago, because I bought it on the way to 4-H camp - I was probably in 7th grade, maybe 8th...so 3 or 4 years ago I guess.

The article about Kara Sharpe was from the April 11, 2001 edition of the magazine "Ice Queens and Kings"... I have no idea if she is still skating....at that time she was competing at the Juvenile level and had competed at competitions in florida and had competed in one out of state competition in Philadelphie (the Wissahickon Summer Competition)....
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I looked up Kara's results and found that she finished 4th in her initial qualifying round and 12th in her short program group (not high enough to make the final free skate) at the 2001 South Atlantic regionals; I didn't see her name in the results for either of the past two years. But never fear; I did skim over the names "Sarah" and "Tara" (among others) many times while looking, so there's still hope. :)
