Check out the USA Today Monday Edition. There is a fairly comprehensive story about the congress in it. Hope this helps. The major item of discussion os of course the sytem to be used to mark future competitions.

I just read in USAToday that the USFSA withdrew its life-time ban proposal for ethical misconduct in exchange for a promise of a committee to draft a code of ethics :( . This one is definitely going to be a very long and hard fight.

The USAToday article did not say whether or not Skate Canada withdrew its proposal for rendering federation presidents ineligible for sitting on the ISU Council or any committee along with judging/refereeing while serving as a federation president. Time will tell...I hope that one stays on the docket.

The heat will definitely have to be kept on the ISU to ensure that they do indeed follow through with the formation of the committee to draft a code of ethics and that such a code of ethics is indeed produced, ratified and vigorously enforced. Given that we are talking about the ISU here, this could prove to be a VERY tall order indeed.

Good news and bad news - GOOD: Cinquanta's plan may not ever go into effect, at least not before 2004.

Did you all see the USA Today for Tuesday June 4th? Another article. It looks like they are going to try and do Cinquanta's proposal by easing it in over a period of four years. The article implies that he bushwacked the meeting by only presenting his proposal and not allowing the others to be discussed until a later time. The article says that there was a lopsided vote in his favor. Very interesting.

Don't worry, Scott. As time goes on, Speedy's plan will indeed prove most unworkable  . The measures that the US and Australia have proposed are much simpler and can be implemented with the present system in place...so perhaps something good will come out of that.

What I want to see happen is the formation of that committee to draft the code of ethics for officials and that the committee actually does draft such a code that has some real teeth in it and is vigorously enforced, but I have serious doubts about this one :frus: Another thing I want to see happen is the passage of Skate Canada's proposal that federation presidents are ineligible to sit on the ISU council, any ISU committees or to judge/referee while serving as federation president. That would go a long way to putting the lid on some of the shennanigans :x

Also remember the IOC has put some real heat on the ISU to get something done, so it is in the ISU's interest to not just give this lip-service, but to produce some real results. Will they rise to that challenge? We shall soon see...

Part, maybe all, of the reason the vote was lopsided was because he brought in the speed skating representatives to vote for it, but I don't think they will not be voting on the other proposals.

How is the ISU president (AKA Speey) selected? How long is his term? Is he elected or appointed?

Great the destiny of figure skating judging is in the hands of speed skaters. What next?

Interesting Article in the USA Today Sports section ( page 9-c). The Aussies are really pushing their plan. In fact the article says that under theor plan Bereshnaya and Sikharulidze would have clearly won the gold at the Olympics. The Aussie plan involves 14 judges, with only 9 marks considered and then the two highest and two lowest marks disgarded. This means that only five judges scores would be conisdered in selecting the winners. The five scores added together determine the placements. The problem with this is that different judges w could be selected for each skater. This may be like comparing apples and oranges. But very interesting plan. The ISU plan calls for 14 judges with the computer selecting 9 judges who will then be used for all skaters. Judges would start each skater out with a 0 score and then add for elements. Triple jumps worth more than doubles, etc. Again, the selected scores are added up to determine placements. The US plan focuses on a median mark to determine placement. If you get the USA today read this article. It explains these proosals very well.
