Here's a link to an ESPN.com story about Dallas 2003's search for a new executive director. They seem to be having a big problem with sponsorship and ticket sales.

Maybe if they didn't charge so much for tickets, they'd have sold more by now. I don't mean to pick on Dallas because all of the US National championships are priced too high. An all-event ticket to the World Championships in Vancouver cost less than a ticket to Nationals. While there are more events going on at the US Nationals, there are more competitors per event at Worlds. You could go to the Canadian Nationals for around $150 US. While the OVERALL level of skating at the US Nationals is a bit above that at Canadians, I don't feel it's over $400 more. Good tickets are just priced too far out of range for the average skating fan. Only the rich and/or hardcore skating fans are willing to fork over more than $500.

If its any indication, they had abandoned their booth at this year's Nationals when I happened to stop by - but the 2004 Atlanta folks were there, very helpful, and definitely taking notes of all the stuff that was going wrong in LA.
I suspect 2004 and 2006 will be the big events for US Nationals - Dallas and Portland are somewhat more geographically challenged locations.
As for ticket prices and selling things a couple of years in advance  just what are they thinking? The crowds in the Staples Center never approached near full until the ladies freeskate.

Can't wait for Atlanta 2004. 8)
I do think that Dallas Nationals is hurt by high ticket prices, the fact that everyone will have to ride shuttles to the Arena (a huge no-no for me) and the fact that folks like me that are skating poor would rather do Worlds in DC next year rather than Dallas Nationals. 8)
