View Full Version : And with the end of the old year. Sarah and her fans get to enjoy it anew
Today's NY Times sports section features "Feats of Grace and Grit," stories from 2002. There are six altogether, and Sarah's Olympic victory is the first of them. The photograph (oddly enough) is of Sarah in her Fosse outfit, but the four paragraph piece (by George Vecsey) is all Olympics, and ends with: "Everybody knew what had just happened. It went beyond figure skating. It was the most stunning moment of the sports year."
And for those who don't read the Times, Parade Magazine today, with its year-end The Best & Worst of Everything Roundup, has as its very first picture Sarah kissing her gold medal, with the heading "Just Perfect."
Happy old year!

It was a great moment but the most stunning for me was seeing Serena win three Grand Slams in a row over Venus.

I agree. Serena really showed how superior she was not only to the ladies field, but also her own sister. It still amazes me that Serena dominated so consistently. Time Magazine put Serena in their Year-In-Review.
Sarah was great, too :) Definitely worthy of the honor :)

I have a problem with the Williams' sisters - there's always a lingering possibility all those wins could have been 'staged' somewhat, to maximize the popularity and earnings (tennis sure brings is way more $$$ than skating does). They were also favorites to win.
Sarah's victory is truly memorable - here was the girl who almost everyone basically wrote off, winning the Olympic title. You only get to try this once every four years and skating unlike tennis doesn't offer the same type of career longevity. And certainly stunning - because almost everyone thought she'd never win - especially after the short program.

it certainly was most definitely deserved... it's not only that sarah won, but how she won the gold. coming from behind as the serious underdog right till the very end! amazing! kwan and slute were the clear-cut favorites, and i even think most thought that cohen was more favored to medal over hughes... and she beat them all when many believed that she'd have to fight hard even for a bronze.

Thanks for sharing the article. Sarah more than deserves her props for that amazing long program. However, "the you know how figure skating works" certainly didn't hold true in 98 and perhaps not in 94. As far as contortions, the 4 judges who put Irina into first were the contortionists.

The day after the short program, it seemed like Sarah wasn't even in the equation according to the media--She was being treated like an afterthought even by NBC, the home of the Olympics. It just miffed me that reporters were so ready to write her off, and even though I didn't believe she'd be a gold medallist the next night, I didn't believe that she wouldn't find a way to just make it to the podium either! "Oh ye of little faith!!" ;)

When I saw this thread title, I thought it was referring to that old familiar feeling I've had again recently seeing Sarah being totally written off in many people's predictions. Deja vu all over again. :D
