Hey everyone!
I got the Gold on Ice book about the Olympic Pairs scandal. I started reading it laast night and I realized what great skaters they both were in singles skating! I was so amazed!
David was a junior silver medalist in 1992 and later became 4th in senior Canadians only after placing second in the short program.
Meanwhile Jamie was a bronze medalist in junior and became fifth in senior actaully beating jen robinson!

I was sooo surprised, of course I knew that pair skaters must have a talent or a nack for freeskate but I never realized they were that well GOOD! Was I all in the dark in this one or are there other peopl out there that did know they were this capable in freeskate:?:

they both competed in years where the freeskate calibre was down. Not trying to knock their talents, but I remember Jamie skating. Her presentation rocked, but her triples weren't there. Now David had more triples, but again his charm was what sold his programs. Many skaters compete in singles and pairs. I think its a great idea as it keeps their technical level up

I remember the ladies competition that year, and noticing how there were skaters with fabulous presentation (notably Jamie and Keylah Ohs), and skaters with really good jumps (notably Angie Derochie) ... but no one who had both.

As for the book, Gold on Ice, I got a copy under the tree too ;) (thanks Santa!). It has some great pics and it's a good addition to my collection, but you sure can tell that it was put together in a hurry. Not exactly award-winning writing. Oh well, I don't mind.

Yes I do recall them skating "singles" way way back !! When Jamie skated "singles" again back in 1998 when I attended Nationals in Hamilton, "singles" was just not her game. I mean "pairs" was definitly her strong side, and just seeing her skate alone just didn't look right to me. So glad that Jamie & David found each other .. and well as they say, the rest is history !!

I totally agree Artemis the writing isn't something to brag about especially if you are a Globe and Mail news reporter. It gets to the point, it's a bunch of facts (which I'm not complaining about!) It has very few connecting words and so forth. But I still thanking Santa with you, you can never go wrong with a book on figure skating Sale and Pelletier in particular.
I guess I was in the dark on there whole previous single careers, whether it be successful or not. I suppose the calibre of skating has really increased since then. I was comparing David's medal winning performances to now-a-days Jr competitions. With the whole triple lutz and well axel. Just really got caught up in the moment..lol!
Oh yes and by the way figuristka I am TOTALLY with you on the tape-a-holic thing! Everytime there is skating on TV I pull out another tape. Doesn't matter who is skating how old it is or even what language! It's skating, so it deserves to be on tape. You never know when another scandal is going to erupt.. just joking! Hopefully not soon though!

I agree that the writing was nothing to be proud of. I managed to read the whole book at the Store with my daughter reading/playing beside me. There were a lot of beautiful pictures, but it annoyed me that they were not in cronological order. It's a nice book to have if someone else paid for it in my opinion, but I wouldn't get if for myself.

And yes I remember very clearly the year David placed 4th. He place third in pairs that year as well with Allison Gaylor ( and B/E were in the kiss and cry area with them ). He could have made the world team in both singles and pairs!!!
