The Hughes upset of Russian Irina Slutskaya and fellow American Michelle Kwan at the Olympics was the biggest competition shocker of the year. She earned it, too, despite what Slutskaya fans insist, by landing two triple-triple combos to perfection.

That part of the article sounds so unprofessional. I have never heard the term "kwan fans" in an article and I hope I never do.

I did not like this point of the article either.

I agree that this article definitely expressed a biased opinion. I am not necessarily a "Slutskaya fan" (in fact, I was pulling for Michelle at the Olympics), but I do think that Irina should have won the short program instead of Michelle, and that Sarah should have won the long program. If Irina had won the short, she would have won the gold medal despite placing second to Sarah in the long program. I am happy for Sarah, and I think her free skate was spectacular, but I can see how some people might feel that Irina skated better overall throughout both phases of the competition.

I totally agree with you , Michelle should not have won the short or long program. Irina should have won the gold , but did not because she was ripped off in the short program.

Nothing towards Sarah(she has nothing to do with it) but,
I find it quite funny that these idiotic writters with just about every article written on Hughes finds a way to slight Slutskaya and/or Kwan.

I do not think Irina was ripped off in the short program. After the short I would have placed them:

1) Michelle
2) Sasha
3) Irina
4) Sarah

In the long program, I would have ranked them:

1) Sarah
2) Michelle
3) Sasha
4) Irina

Thus, Michelle would have won gold overall. My nickname for Irina is Monkey Wrench. ;)

Oh well welll welll. Don't be bothered by what G&M says. Canadians recently have a survey and it was found that the overwhelming majority of Canadians do not trust our newspapers.  G&M isn't really a sport a newspaper - it is a "financial times" or "new york times" want-to-be. It is black and white - 8O 8O 8O

Uhm, before people start slagging Canada's national newspaper, please note that the article was written by Canadian Press (Canadian version of the AP).

And the sarcastic line was obviously in response to the uproar in Russia after Sarah won. Did people forget about that?

And the G&M is way better than the NY Times.
