One of the real advantages of home delivery is you get your Sunday supplements on Saturday.

My local paper's TV supplement has Nicole on its cover, and an article by George Dickie (of Zap2it) about her and the Christmas Day Holiday Celebration on Ice on NBC. The article also includes a picture of Yagudin. Here's a quote from Nicole about turning pro:

"I've been a little bit different from most skaters because I was never very competitive. And I guess when you're in a competitive sport, it's a little bit hard when you're not a competitive person...So I think skating became very hard and very stressful. And you started to just dread skating. You hated to go and practice every day and drill yourself. And I love skating. I've skated since I was 3, and I didn't want to reach that point where it was horrible for me."

The NY Times TV supplement has a full page article about Sarah and her Christmas day special. The page has three full color pictures of Sarah and includes a very nice plug for www.dianesrink.com/sarah. Here's a quote from John Faratzis, the show's executive producer:

"This gold medal victory, as stunning as it was, is going to be, I think, in the long run, an event in her life, not the defining moment. She has friends; she continues to hang with people. She isn't just one-dimensional. She's got a big family, and they've played a role in her development."

The Times article, by Jody Alesandro, starts with a great description of Sarah's finding out she won Olympic gold:

"...she did what any highly disciplined honor-roll student from a big Ivy League family would do: she screamed like a banshee and sank down to the ground..."

Happy holidays!:D

Seems like Nicole's remarks are some of the most honest I've seen regarding a lack of competitiveness. Sometimes I wonder if some of the so-called 'headcases' are just kids who went into skating for fun, showed some pretty incredible talent and wound up 'in' it way deeper than their psychological makeup should have allowed.

As for Sarah...I chuckled at the description of what she did after finding out she won -- "screamed like a banshee" ... too funny! ;)

Thanks rack for taking all that time to describe both pieces to us. Interesting to see a thread mentioning both my former and current fave ladies skater. Yes, Nicole's comments are very reflective of her attitude about competing, and perhaps also of some others who come to mind.
"Screamed like a banshee" ... heh.

Hey, we all saw and heard (how could you not hear that scream???) that she screamed like a banshee! She screamed like one in K&C too when she got her scores!:D

Well, if Sarah is as smart as her GPA and acceptance to Harvard would indicate, then she is not going to be satisfied with only a skating life...she is going to need a lot more to fulfill herself and thus to enjoy her life..and she will also enjoy being around and working with others who are as expansive as she is.

The luckiest people in life are those who go to work every day and get paid to do what they love doing more than anything else...
